    Data Envelopment Analysis as a Complement to Marginal Analysis

    The consideration in the present study is mainly conceptual. The objective is to show how Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) can be used to reveal the true input-output relations in an industry. In the estimation of a production function it is assumed that all firms use the existing technology efficiently. However, in the real world the observed firms produce homogeneous outputs with differences in factor intensities and in managerial capacity. Hence, inefficiencies are hidden in the estimated production functions. In order to overcome this drawback of the parametric approach and to reveal the true nature of the input-output relations in production, given the available technology, the DEA approach is applied. In this study DEA is applied in order to select the farms that utilize efficiently the existing technology, allowing the estimation of a production function that reveals the true input-output relations in sheep-goat farming, using farm accounting data from a sample of 108 sheep-goat farms.Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,

    Perspective distortion modeling for image measurements

    A perspective distortion modelling for monocular view that is based on the fundamentals of perspective projection is presented in this work. Perspective projection is considered to be the most ideal and realistic model among others, which depicts image formation in monocular vision. There are many approaches trying to model and estimate the perspective effects in images. Some approaches try to learn and model the distortion parameters from a set of training data that work only for a predefined structure. None of the existing methods provide deep understanding of the nature of perspective problems. Perspective distortions, in fact, can be described by three different perspective effects. These effects are pose, distance and foreshortening. They are the cause of the aberrant appearance of object shapes in images. Understanding these phenomena have long been an interesting topic for artists, designers and scientists. In many cases, this problem has to be necessarily taken into consideration when dealing with image diagnostics, high and accurate image measurement, as well as accurate pose estimation from images. In this work, a perspective distortion model for every effect is developed while elaborating the nature of perspective effects. A distortion factor for every effect is derived, then followed by proposed methods, which allows extracting the true target pose and distance, and correcting image measurements

    Optimal Time-dependent Sequenced Route Queries in Road Networks

    In this paper we present an algorithm for optimal processing of time-dependent sequenced route queries in road networks, i.e., given a road network where the travel time over an edge is time-dependent and a given ordered list of categories of interest, we find the fastest route between an origin and destination that passes through a sequence of points of interest belonging to each of the specified categories of interest. For instance, considering a city road network at a given departure time, one can find the fastest route between one's work and his/her home, passing through a bank, a supermarket and a restaurant, in this order. The main contribution of our work is the consideration of the time dependency of the network, a realistic characteristic of urban road networks, which has not been considered previously when addressing the optimal sequenced route query. Our approach uses the A* search paradigm that is equipped with an admissible heuristic function, thus guaranteed to yield the optimal solution, along with a pruning scheme for further reducing the search space. In order to compare our proposal we extended a previously proposed solution aimed at non-time dependent sequenced route queries, enabling it to deal with the time-dependency. Our experiments using real and synthetic data sets have shown our proposed solution to be up to two orders of magnitude faster than the temporally extended previous solution.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures To be published as a short paper in the 23rd ACM SIGSPATIA

    The Impact of Uncertainty Shocks under Measurement Error: A Proxy SVAR approach

    A growing literature considers the impact of uncertainty using SVAR models that include proxies for uncertainty shocks as endogenous variables. In this paper we consider the impact of measurement error in these proxies on the estimated impulse responses. We show via a Monte-Carlo experiment that measurement error can result in attenuation bias in impulse responses. In contrast, the proxy SVAR that uses the uncertainty shock proxy as an instrument does not su¤er from this bias. Applying this latter method to the Bloom (2009) data-set results in impulse responses to uncertainty shocks that are larger in magnitude and more persistent than those obtained from a recursive SVAR

    Using segmented objects in ostensive video shot retrieval

    This paper presents a system for video shot retrieval in which shots are retrieved based on matching video objects using a combination of colour, shape and texture. Rather than matching on individual objects, our system supports sets of query objects which in total reflect the user’s object-based information need. Our work also adapts to a shifting user information need by initiating the partitioning of a user’s search into two or more distinct search threads, which can be followed by the user in sequence. This is an automatic process which maps neatly to the ostensive model for information retrieval in that it allows a user to place a virtual checkpoint on their search, explore one thread or aspect of their information need and then return to that checkpoint to then explore an alternative thread. Our system is fully functional and operational and in this paper we illustrate several design decisions we have made in building it
