Acoustic Properties of Lanthanum-Samarium Phosphate Glasses

From measurements of changes in transit time of 10 MHz of ultrasonic waves as a function of temperature and hydrostatic pressure, the acoustic properties of (La203)x(Sm203)y(P20,,) (l-x-y) glasses with compositions near to that corresponding to the metaphosphate have been determined. For each glass, the second order elastic stiffness tensor components Cij ' (SOEC) continue to increase down to 10 Kin a manner consistent with phonon interactions with tVi'Qlevel systems. Measurements of the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the ultrasonic wave velocities have been used to determine the hydrostatic pressure derivatives (dCij/dP) T,P=O of the SOEC and (dBo'/ dP) T,P=O of the bulk modulus Bo at room temperature (293K). For these glasses, (dCll/dP), (dC44/dP), and (dBo / dP), are small but positive; the corresponding glasses stiffen under pressure. The elastic behaviour under pressure of these glasses lies intermediate between those of (Sm203)y(P20,,),(I_x) and (La20:1)y(P20,,) (I-x) glasses. Replacement of La3+ by Sm3+ in the temary phosphate glasses drives a slight acoustic mode softening. Possible. sources of the different effect of La:>+ and Sm3+ modifiers on the nonlinear acoustic properties of metaphosphate glasses are discussed

Specific-heat Study of Low-energy Vibrational State m Vitreous Samarium Phosphates

    Get PDF
Measurements of specific heat in the temperature range 1.5K to 30K were made for two samples of vitreous samarium phosphates. A large contribution to the specific heat, well above what is expected from acoustic phonons (in the Debye approximation), is discussed in terms of the theoretical predictions of a phonon-fracton cross-over approach. The phonon-fracton density of states used to fit the excess specific heat gives rise to model parameters with the same magnitudes as those found previously for a wide range of glasses

Comparison of normalization methods for differential gene expression analysis in RNA-Seq experiments: A matter of relative size of studied transcriptomes

In recent years, RNA-Seq technologies became a powerful tool for transcriptome studies. However, computational methods dedicated to the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data are yet to be standardized. In particular, it is known that the choice of a normalization procedure leads to a great variability in results of differential gene expression analysis. The present study compares the most widespread normalization procedures and proposes a novel one aiming at removing an inherent bias of studied transcriptomes related to their relative size. Comparisons of the normalization procedures are performed on real and simulated data sets. Real RNA-Seq data sets analyses, performed with all the different normalization methods, show that only 50% of significantly differentially expressed genes are common. This result highlights the influence of the normalization step on the differential expression analysis. Real and simulated data sets analyses give similar results showing 3 different groups of procedures having the same behavior. The group including the novel method named “Median Ratio Normalization” (MR N) gives the lower number of false discoveries. Within this group the MR N method is less sensitive to the modification of parameters related to the relative size of transcriptomes such as the number of down- and upregulated genes and the gene expression levels. The newly proposed MR N method efficiently deals with intrinsic bias resulting from relative size of studied transcriptomes. Validation with real and simulated data sets confirmed that MR N is more consistent and robust than existing methods

    Employability: does university-industry linkages matters

This study is aimed at identifying the important university-industry linkages (UILs) activities that can be pivotal in developing self-perceived employability among Pakistani university students. It also examines the relationship between UILs and self-perceived employability. It seeks to answer the question, whether the dimensions of UILs plays any role in selfperceived employability among Pakistani university students? Design/Methodology/Approach: The instrument developed by Ishengoma, and Vaaland (2016) was used to identify the important UILs activities and selfperceived employability among students was measured through Rothwell, Herbert, & Rothwell (2008)' scale. A sample of 285 university students who are enrolled in 11 federally chartered universities of Islamabad, Pakistan was surveyed via close ended questionnaire through emails and in person. Descriptive statistics and PLS-SEM were applied to tests the hypothesized relationship by using SmartPLS. Finding: The study results reveal that all three dimensions of UILs (1. collaborative training & educational activities, 2. collaborative consulting activities, 3. collaborative research activities) are positively related to self-perceived employability, and hence, supports all three hypotheses. The strong and significant regression results are indicative of this conjecture. The study also reflects the student internship programs and joint projects are most popular UILs activity in Pakistani universities. Implications: The research findings augment our understanding of UILs in Pakistan and how they relate to self-perceived employability. The study findings have implications for universities who are striving for better role in society and for industry, who want to be innovative in order to remain competitive. Lastly it has special implications for students who are about to enter in their professional lives and for policy makers to redefining the role of universities, industry and government to promote employability. Originality/value: This research adds values to existing literature on UILs, as most of previous UILs are descriptive and exploratory in nature. This is a unique explanatory study which relates UILs with employability, particularly in context of a developing country

One of the key elements of managing the operations of the organization - management costs, as the costs, representing the payment that needs to be done to attract and retain economic resources, are one of the main factors determining the size of the financial results of the organization, return on invested capital, and, ultimately, the value of the business.Objectives. The aim of this work is to study the influence of the structure of production costs on the profitability of products.Method’s. To complete this article were used such methods of analysis as legal, comparative, economic-statistical and correlation. Conclusions / significance. The practical value of this work lies in the fact that in the article the notion and cogs, equations of linear regression between the proportion of costs in the cost and profitability of products by types of economic activity in the Russian Federation in 2012, the Obtained models allow knowing the share of costs in the cost structure for different types of economic activities in the Russian Federation in 2012 to estimate the average level of profitability of production.
