    Realistic boundaries of finite heat conductivity Realistic boundaries of finite heat conductivity for thermoconvection in a Rayleigh-B\'enard setup with magnetized ferrofluids are investigated. A linear stability analysis of the conductive state is performed with a shooting method. It shows that the critical wave number is for any magnetic field stronly influenced by the conductivity of the boundaries. Linear as well as nonlinear coefficients of a Ginzburg Landau amplitude equation for convection shortly above the onset are evaluated as functions of the magnetic Rayleigh number, the boundary conductivities, and the fluid Prandtl number.Comment: 10 pages, 9figure

    Hepatic artery thrombosis after liver transplantation: Radiologic evaluation

    Hepatic artery thrombosis after liver transplantation is a devastating event requiring emergency retransplantation in most patients. Early clinical signs are often nonspecific. Before duplex sonography (combined real-time and pulsed Doppler) capability was acquired in October 1984, 76% of all transplants in this institution referred for angiography with a clinical suspicion of hepatic artery thrombosis had patent arteries. In an effort to reduce the number of negative angiograms, CT, real-time sonography, and pulsed Doppler have been evaluated as screening examinations to determine which patients need angiography. Of 14 patients with focal inhomogeneity of the liver architecture detected by CT and/or real-time sonography, 12 (86%) had hepatic artery thrombosis, one had slow arterial flow with hepatic necrosis, and one had a biloma with a patent hepatic artery. In 29 patients undergoing duplex sonography of the hepatic artery, six (21%) had absence of a Doppler arterial pulse. All six had abnormal angiograms: Four had thrombosis, one had a significant stenosis, and one had slow flow with biopsy-proven ischemia. Of 23 patients with a Doppler pulse, two had hepatic artery thrombosis at surgery. However, real-time sonography demonstrated focal inhomogeneity in the liver in both cases. Our data demonstrate that pulsed Doppler of the hepatic artery combined with real-time sonography of the liver parenchyma currently is the optimal screening test for selecting patients who require hepatic angiography after liver transplantation.     Pseudoaneurysm of the Breast: An Uncommon Complication of Core Needle Biopsy

    A 61-year-old female presented with persistent pain in the left breast following benign core needle biopsy. Diagnostic mammogram demonstrated a new small circumscribed mass in the upper outer quadrant of the left breast directly adjacent to the previously biopsied mass. Subsequent targeted Color Doppler ultrasound revealed a vascular mass with to and fro pulsatility. A diagnosis of breast pseudoaneurysm was made, a known albeit rare complication of breast core needle biopsy. The patient was treated with ultrasound guided thrombin injection into the pseudoaneurysm sac which resulted in complete sac thrombosis.https://scholarlycommons.henryford.com/merf2019caserpt/1077/thumbnail.jp

    Scale-Free topologies and Activatory-Inhibitory interactions

    A simple model of activatory-inhibitory interactions controlling the activity of agents (substrates) through a "saturated response" dynamical rule in a scale-free network is thoroughly studied. After discussing the most remarkable dynamical features of the model, namely fragmentation and multistability, we present a characterization of the temporal (periodic and chaotic) fluctuations of the quasi-stasis asymptotic states of network activity. The double (both structural and dynamical) source of entangled complexity of the system temporal fluctuations, as an important partial aspect of the Correlation Structure-Function problem, is further discussed to the light of the numerical results, with a view on potential applications of these general results.Comment: Revtex style, 12 pages and 12 figures.     We develop powerful numerical and analytical techniques for the solution of the Helmholtz equation on general domains. We prove two theorems: the first theorem provides an exact formula for the ground state of an arbirtrary membrane, while the second theorem generalizes this result to any excited state of the membrane. We also develop a systematic perturbative scheme which can be used to study the small deformations of a membrane of circular or square shapes.
