Temperature distribution in an aircraft tire at low ground speeds

    Get PDF
An experimental study was conducted to define temperature profiles of 22 x 5.5, type 7, bias ply aircraft tires subjected to freely rolling, yawed rolling, and light braking conditions. Temperatures along the inner wall of freely rolling tires were greater than those near the outer surface. The effect of increasing tire deflection was to increase the temperature within the shoulder and sidewall areas of the tire carcass. The effect of cornering and braking was to increase the treat temperature. For taxi operations at fixed yaw angles, temperature profiles were not symmetric. Increasing the ground speed produced only moderate increases in tread temperature, whereas temperatures in the carcass shoulder and sidewall were essentially unaffected

The Empowering Effects of Cooperative Development Among Indigenous Women in Southern Mexico

Abstract The Zapatista uprising, rebellion, and ongoing attempts to create a new way of life inside Mexico is unique. While Zapatistas have purposely isolated themselves from the Mexican government, they are not isolated from surrounding communities. Zapatista influences can be seen in the practices and organization of cooperatives and in the altered role of indigenous women in the surrounding communities. This study focuses on four cooperatives: one located in the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico, and the others in rural surrounding areas. The selected collectives produce traditional artisan work, basic food staples, natural personal care products, and herbal medicines. Using a snowball sampling technique, the investigator identified prospective interview participants. Nineteen women participated in 1-2 hour formal interviews, four individually and the others in small group settings; all formal interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Participants ranged in age from early 20s to early 50s; the majority self-identified as Tzotzil and Tzeltal, which represent approximately 71% of the indigenous population in Chiapas. Of the four cooperatives represented, two had direct working relationships with Zapatista cooperatives, and all had practices modeled on the Zapatista movement. Based on a phenomenological analysis of the transcripts, this paper argues that while the cooperatives were developed in response to forced internal displacement and extreme poverty, they were sustained because they provided a new kind of partnership, influenced by the Zapatista Movement, for the women to participate in the support and survival of their families. These findings suggest the potential of cooperatives as a cost-effective tool of development to promote gender role equality worldwide as well as provide recognition that this complex study and novel findings were only possible through a multidisciplinary and transnational academic and community partnership, integrating social work, women’s studies, and geography

Thermophysical properties of parahydrogen from the freezing liquid line to 5000 R for pressures to 10000 psia

The tables include entropy, enthalpy, internal energy, density, volume, speed of sound, specific heat, thermal conductivity, viscosity, thermal diffusivity, Prandtl number, and the dielectric constant for 65 isobars. Quantities of special utility in heat transfer and thermodynamic calculations are also included in the isobaric tables. In addition to the isobaric tables, tables for the saturated vapor and liquid are given, which include all of the above properties, plus the surface tension. Tables for the P-T of the freezing liquid, index of refraction, and the derived Joule-Thomson inversion curve are also presented

Music Theory in Central New York State Public Schools : An Investigation

    Get PDF
The growth of technological and vocational education in public schools threatens the rebuilding of music programs which were cut during the taxpayer revolt of the seventies. If the threatened music programs are unable to equip the students choosing music careers with the fundamental tools of the trade, they are destined to be deemed expendible. The current investigation sought to determine the current ability of the public schools to provide their students with an understanding of the structure and language of music. The study examined the comprehension of music theory by 119 high school seniors from eight school districts in six counties in central New York State who had lived in their public school district since fourth grade and had participated in the music program throughout high school. The districts supplied data on enrollment, budget, staffing and other information relevant to their music programs; the students answered a questionnaire on their music experiences both in and out of school. The investigation found generally that the students pursuing music careers had studied privately, had had piano instruction, and had a functional music theory education. However, the study also found that most of the students tested had only a minimal comprehension of key signatures, intervals, scales and chords, but scored somewhat better on enharmonics, note values, meter, and terminology. The study concludes that more research in the present condition of music education, other than performance, needs to be done. Schools need to have private voice, as well as instrumental lessons available to students and need to offer secondary courses in music theory, music history, and sightsinging, and, if at all feasible, piano instruction because these factors had the most impact on the students\u27 knowledge and ability to communicate the principles of music theory

Beyond Nationalism: James and Grace Lee Boggs and the Black Radical Tradition in 1980s Detroit

    Get PDF
This paper explores the Black Radical Tradition in the 1980s through the lens of James and Grace Lee Boggs and their dedication to grassroots, community organizing and evolving revolutionary rhetoric. Existing scholarship on the decade is largely dedicated to the dialectic fluctuation of Black Power ideology and liberal reform that created a more conservative political agenda centered around partisan politics. Alternatively, the activism of James and Grace Lee Boggs in the immediate aftermath of the Black Power Era presents a complex view of the decade, providing space for black radicalism. The adaptation of the couple’s theories and mobilization strategies serve as a case study of the Black Radical tradition from the 1950s through the mid-1970s. Simultaneously, their continued activism and wholesale rejection of partisan politics in the late 1970s and 1980s charts a new path of study for black radicalism and black solidarity after the State sanctioned decimation of the Black Power Movement and the unofficial death of radicalism. James and Grace Lee’s grassroots organizing demonstrates a continuation of the Black Radical Tradition, evolved to fit contemporary circumstances. Their preservation of radical rhetoric in the 1980s disputes the consensus that black radicalism was wholly replaced by electoral mobilization. The couple’s extra-political radicalism adds nuance to the African-American experience of the 1980s, demonstrating the variety of African-American resistance to the rise of American conservatism
