Influence of electromagnetic interferences on the gravimetric sensitivity of surface acoustic waveguides
Surface acoustic waveguides are increasing in interest for (bio)chemical
detection. The surface mass modification leads to measurable changes in the
propagation properties of the waveguide. Among a wide variety of waveguides,
Love mode has been investigated because of its high gravimetric sensitivity.
The acoustic signal launched and detected in the waveguide by electrical
transducers is accompanied by an electromagnetic wave; the interaction of the
two signals, easily enhanced by the open structure of the sensor, creates
interference patterns in the transfer function of the sensor. The influence of
these interferences on the gravimetric sensitivity is presented, whereby the
structure of the entire sensor is modelled. We show that electromagnetic
interferences generate an error in the experimental value of the sensitivity.
This error is different for the open and the closed loop configurations of the
sensor. The theoretical approach is completed by the experimentation of an
actual Love mode sensor operated under liquid in open loop configuration. The
experiment indicates that the interaction depends on the frequency and the mass

Mean-field magnetization relaxation in conducting ferromagnets
Collective ferromagnetic motion in a conducting medium is damped by the
transfer of the magnetic moment and energy to the itinerant carriers. We
present a calculation of the corresponding magnetization relaxation as a
linear-response problem for the carrier dynamics in the effective exchange
field of the ferromagnet. In electron systems with little intrinsic spin-orbit
interaction, a uniform magnetization motion can be formally eliminated by going
into the rotating frame of reference for the spin dynamics. The ferromagnetic
damping in this case grows linearly with the spin-flip rate when the latter is
smaller than the exchange field and is inversely proportional to the spin-flip
rate in the opposite limit. These two regimes are analogous to the
"spin-pumping" and the "breathing Fermi-surface" damping mechanisms,
respectively. In diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors, the hole-mediated
magnetization can be efficiently relaxed to the itinerant-carrier degrees of
freedom due to the strong spin-orbit interaction in the valence bands.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Delocalization transition for the Google matrix
We study the localization properties of eigenvectors of the Google matrix,
generated both from the World Wide Web and from the Albert-Barabasi model of
networks. We establish the emergence of a delocalization phase for the PageRank
vector when network parameters are changed. In the phase of localized PageRank,
a delocalization takes place in the complex plane of eigenvalues of the matrix,
leading to delocalized relaxation modes. We argue that the efficiency of
information retrieval by Google-type search is strongly affected in the phase

The object of the present paper is to provide a suitable brief statement of the present state of knowledge of the Pleistocene geology of Nebraska, for an adequate understanding of the Pleistocene Mammal list, by Mr. C. Bertrand Schultz, which forms Part II of this report. The outline is necessarily brief and does not contain many detailed sections, nor lengthy discussions of controversial points. It is lacking in adequate detailed descriptions of new formations and may not be entirely convincing to many readers. The only excuse which the writer can offer for the shortcomings of the following pages is the necessity for brevity, and so the presentation is little more than a statement of conclusions
Bounded Determinization of Timed Automata with Silent Transitions
Deterministic timed automata are strictly less expressive than their
non-deterministic counterparts, which are again less expressive than those with
silent transitions. As a consequence, timed automata are in general
non-determinizable. This is unfortunate since deterministic automata play a
major role in model-based testing, observability and implementability. However,
by bounding the length of the traces in the automaton, effective
determinization becomes possible. We propose a novel procedure for bounded
determinization of timed automata. The procedure unfolds the automata to
bounded trees, removes all silent transitions and determinizes via disjunction
of guards. The proposed algorithms are optimized to the bounded setting and
thus are more efficient and can handle a larger class of timed automata than
the general algorithms. The approach is implemented in a prototype tool and
evaluated on several examples. To our best knowledge, this is the first
implementation of this type of procedure for timed automata.Comment: 25 page
Digital, memory and mixed-signal test engineering education: five centres of competence in Europe
The launching of the EuNICE-Test project was announced two years ago at the first DELTA Conference. This project is now completed and the present paper describes the project actions and outcomes. The original idea was to build a long-lasting European Network for test engineering education using both test resource mutualisation and remote experiments. This objective is fully fulfilled and we have now, in Europe, five centres of competence able to deliver high-level and high-specialized training courses in the field of test engineering using a high-performing industrial ATE. All the centres propose training courses on digital testing, three of them propose mixed-signal trainings and three of them propose memory trainings. Taking into account the demand in test engineering, the network is planned to continue in a stand alone mode after project end. Nevertheless a new European proposal with several new partners and new test lessons is under construction
Nonlinear optical response of a gold surface in the visible range: A study by two-color sum-frequency generation spectroscopy. I. Experimental determination
International audienceWe experimentally determine the effective nonlinear second-order susceptibility of gold over the visible spectral range. To reach that goal, we probe by vibrational two-color sum-frequency generation spectroscopy the methyl stretching region of a dodecanethiol self-assembled monolayer adsorbed on a gold film. The sum-frequency generation spectra show a remarkable shape reversal when the visible probe wavelength is tuned from 435 to 705 nm. After correcting from Fresnel effects, the methyl stretching vibrations serve as an internal reference, allowing to extract the dispersion of the absolute phase and relative amplitude of the effective nonlinear optical response of gold in the visible range. Bi-layer Kinetic Inductance Detectors for space observations between 80-120 GHz
We have developed Lumped Element Kinetic Inductance Detectors (LEKID)
sensitive in the frequency band from 80 to 120~GHz. In this work, we take
advantage of the so-called proximity effect to reduce the superconducting gap
of Aluminium, otherwise strongly suppressing the LEKID response for frequencies
smaller than 100~GHz. We have designed, produced and optically tested various
fully multiplexed arrays based on multi-layers combinations of Aluminium (Al)
and Titanium (Ti). Their sensitivities have been measured using a dedicated
closed-circle 100 mK dilution cryostat and a sky simulator allowing to
reproduce realistic observation conditions. The spectral response has been
characterised with a Martin-Puplett interferometer up to THz frequencies, and
with a resolution of 3~GHz. We demonstrate that Ti-Al LEKID can reach an
optical sensitivity of about ~ (best pixel), or
~ when averaged over the whole array. The optical
background was set to roughly 0.4~pW per pixel, typical for future space
observatories in this particular band. The performance is close to a
sensitivity of twice the CMB photon noise limit at 100~GHz which drove the
design of the Planck HFI instrument. This figure remains the baseline for the

Composite Fermions in Modulated Structures: Transport and Surface Acoustic Waves
Motivated by a recent experiment of Willett et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 4478
(1997)], we employ semiclassical composite-fermion theory to study the effect
of a periodic density modulation on a quantum Hall system near Landau level
filling factor nu=1/2. We show that even a weak density modulation leads to
dramatic changes in surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) propagation, and propose an
explanation for several key features of the experimental observations. We
predict that properly arranged dc transport measurements would show a structure
