Afoxolaner as a Treatment for a Novel Sarcoptes scabiei Infestation in a Juvenile Potbelly Pig

A 2 months old female Vietnamese potbellied pig presented to a veterinary teaching hospital with a referring complaint of pruritus. A human caretaker of the pig had recently been diagnosed with a Sarcoptes spp. dermatitis. Microscopic examination of the skin scrape samples and BLAST analysis confirmed the species of the mite as most closely related to Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis (AY493391). The pig was treated with afoxolaner as previous treatment with ivermectin was not efficacious. Recheck examinations and follow up revealed the pig to be non-pruritic and resolving. Afoxolaner may be a therapeutic option when treating Sarcoptes spp. infections in companion pigs

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs misleading the diagnosis of periapical abscess

Periapical abscesses are common but may rarely be a subclinical infection in dental clinics. If an infection progresses rapidly or slowly as a tooth ache of chronic periodontitis with clinical features misleading the diagnosis, the dentists are able to recognize the salient signs and identify the patients at risk. This article reviews a case of a rare innocuous periapical abscess presenting as angioedema of upper lip with history of consuming nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as diclofenac sodium whenever needed for arthralgia on a short-term basis

Review of research on friction riveting of polymer/metal light weight multi-material structures

The present transportation industry has been challenged by cost-saving requirements, ever-stronger environmental protection regulations and the significant growth of transport volume. One approach for tackling these challenges is the development of new improved transportation vehicles using new materials and innovative joining technologies. In the recent decade, the use of fiber-reinforced plastics-metal structures has increased significantly in bridge, automotive and aircraft structures, and friction riveting has evolved as a new and promising candidate for joining fiber-reinforced plastics to metals. Friction riveting bridges the gap between mechanical fastening and welding, and offers advantages such as short joining cycle times and a minimum of surface pre-treatment of the joining partners. The present work provides a comprehensive understanding of joining mechanism and behavior of friction riveted multi-material joint structures. Friction riveting has full potential to grow as an ecofriendly, economical and reliable joining method for developing polymer-metal multi-material structures
