    The upcoming FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup, to be the most important sports event ever held in Jordan as well as in the region, The purpose of this study was to identify the pre-event image of the World women’s Cup for interest in attending games, and to find out if there are differences in the perception of the respondents In addition, the influence of age, gender, economic level, on the images and interest in attending matches, and to find out the assumed legacy of sports events for local com-munities and for the women in particular by focusing on sports practice. Since the most enthusiastic fans should be the youth, the researchers conducted a study on 240 re-spondents, half of them males, to find out the pre-event perceptions of the women’s world cup, sup-posed to be held in Jordan in just two months. The study revealed that just three of the respondent know the exact date of the event, while most of them looking to the event as a recreation occasion more than opportunity to learn from, while the majority considered the event as an inspiration to be proud off more than a motivation to improve their physical level practice. This study concluded that the primary goal of attendance such mega sport events wouldn’t be the en-gagement in sport activity participation, while the national pride could be the most potential positive impact of organizing such events.(6579

    Use of a Rho kinase inhibitor to increase human tonsil keratinocyte longevity for three-dimensional, tissue engineered tonsil epithelium equivalents

    The generation of tissue-engineered epithelial models is often hampered by the limited proliferative capacity of primary epithelial cells. This study aimed to isolate normal tonsillar keratinocytes (NTK) from human tonsils, increase the lifespan of these cells using the Rho kinase inhibitor Y-27632 and to develop tissue-engineered equivalents of healthy and infected tonsil epithelium. The proliferation rate of isolated NTK and expression of c-MYC and p16INK4A were measured in the absence or presence of the inhibitor. Y-27632-treated NTK were used to generate tissue-engineered tonsil epithelium equivalents using de-epithelialized dermis that were then incubated with Streptococcus pyogenes to model bacterial tonsillitis, and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines was measured by cytokine array and ELISA. NTK cultured in the absence of Y-27632 rapidly senesced whereas cells cultured in the presence of this inhibitor proliferated for over 30 population doublings without changing their phenotype. Y-27632-treated NTK produced a multi-layered differentiated epithelium that histologically resembled normal tonsillar surface epithelium and responded to S. pyogenes infection by increased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines including CXCL5 and IL-6. NTK can be isolated and successfully cultured in vitro with Y-27632 leading to a markedly prolonged lifespan without any deleterious consequences to the cell morphology. This functional tissue-engineered equivalent of tonsil epithelium will provide a valuable tool for studying tonsil biology and host-pathogen interactions in a more physiologically relevant manner

    Adult-Type Rhabdomyoma of the Larynx in Birt-Hogg-Dubé Syndrome: Evidence for a Real Association

    The autosomal dominant Birt–Hogg–Dubé syndrome is known to be associated with skin, lung and kidney lesions. It is caused by heterozygous germline mutations in the folliculin gene and has a high penetrance. We report the case of a 51 year old woman with Birt–Hogg–Dubé syndrome who presented with a laryngeal mass. Imaging confirmed a mass centered on the piriform sinus and following excision histological examination confirmed the lesion was composed of polygonal cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm consistent with a rhabdomyoma. Laryngeal rhabdomyoma is rare condition and has not been previously described in association with Birt–Hogg–Dubé. In patients with Birt–Hogg–Dubé syndrome who develop upper aerodigestive tract symptoms secondary to mass lesion an adult-type rhabdomyoma might be considered as a differential, with endoscopic excision being the treatment of choice

    Lessons from the pandemic: new best practices in selecting molecular diagnostics for point-of-care testing of infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa

    Introduction: Point-of-care molecular diagnostics offer solutions to the limited diagnostic availability and accessibility in resource-limited settings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, molecular diagnostics became essential tools for accurate detection and monitoring of SARS-CoV-2. The unprecedented demand for molecular diagnostics presented challenges and catalyzed innovations which may provide lessons for the future selection of point-of-care molecular diagnostics. Areas Covered: We searched PubMed from January 2020 to August 2023 to identify lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic which may impact the selection of point-of-care molecular diagnostics for future use in sub-Saharan Africa. We evaluated this in the context of REASSURED criteria (Real-time connectivity; Ease of specimen collection; Affordable; Sensitive; Specific; User-friendly; Rapid and robust; Equipment free; and Deliverable to users at the point of need) for point-of-care diagnostics for resource-limited settings. Expert Opinion: The diagnostic challenges and successes during the COVID-19 pandemic affirmed the importance of the REASSURED criteria but demonstrated that these are not sufficient to ensure new diagnostics will be appropriate for public health emergencies. Capacity for rapid scale-up of diagnostic testing and transferability of assays, data, and technology are also important, resulting in updated REST-ASSURED criteria. Few diagnostics will meet all criteria, and trade-offs between criteria will need to be context-specific

    AbstractBackground:There has been a major evolution in laryngeal surgery, largely due to an improved understanding of disease pathogenesis and advances in technology, especially the introduction of lasers.Method and results:Continuous laser plume evacuation during endolaryngeal surgery improves visualisation of the surgical field. Hence, microlaryngoscopes are fitted with smoke evacuation channels on their sides. We have devised a new, simple and efficient suction holder clip for endolaryngeal surgery that has distinct advantages over other suction holders.</jats:sec
