    Water footprint of food quality schemes

    Water Footprint (WF, henceforth) is an indicator of water consumption and has taken ground to assess the impact of agricultural production processes over freshwater. The focus of this study was contrasting non-conventional, certified products with identical products obtained through conventional production schemes (REF, henceforth) using WF as a measure of their pressure on water resources. The aim was to the show whether products that are certified as Food Quality Schemes (FQS, henceforth) could also incorporate the lower impact on water among their quality features. To perform this comparison, we analysed 23 products selected among Organic, PDO and PGI as FQS, and their conventional counterparts. By restricting the domain of analysis to the on-farm phase of the production chain, we obtained that that no significant differences emerged between the FQS and REF products.     L’ARN interférence, mécanisme de régulation de l’expression des gènes, est médiée par les siARNs et les microARNs, ARN non-codants de 20 à 22 nucléotides affectant la régulation post-transcriptionnelle d’ARNm cibles avec lesquels ils s’apparient.La RNase DICER est une enzyme centrale de la biosynthèse des siARNs et microARNs. Les souris dont le gène dicer est invalidé ont un phénotype complexe, et meurent très tôt pendant le développement, notamment à cause d’un défaut d’angiogenèse.Afin d’étudier l’ARN interférence au cours de l’angiogenèse embryonnaire, des souris dont le gène dicer est floxé (mutant conditionnel) sont croisées avec des souris exprimant la recombinase Cre, de manière constitutive, sous le contrôle du promoteur du gène tie2, dirigeant ainsi son expression dans les cellules endothéliales (CE) et les cellules hématopiétiques.Nos résultats montrent que l’invalidation de dicer sous le contrôle du promoteur du gène tie2 entraine une mortalité embryonnaire suite à un œdème et des hémorragies au treizième jour du développement (E13,5). L’analyse histologique montre des vaisseaux lymphatiques remplis de sang, suggérant une mauvaise séparation du réseau sanguin et lymphatique. Cette hypothèse est étudiée par marquage des vaisseaux lymphatiques (LYVE-1) et des vaisseaux sanguins (PECAM) sur embryon entier et peaux isolées à différents stades précédant la mort.Ces embryons présentent également un problème de développement du foie, probablement dû à l’activité du promoteur tie2 dans les lignées hématopoiétiques. La mise en culture de ces foies fœtaux à E13,5 révèle une atteinte des précurseurs hématopoétiques.L’étude de ces précurseurs à des stades plus précoces (E8,5) est en cours au laboratoire.Nos résultats démontrent donc un rôle important de l’ARN interférence dans le contrôle épigénétique de l’angiogenèse et de la lymphangiogenèse embryonnaire mais également dans le développement de l’hématopoièse, suggérant son implication dans la différenciation veino-lymphangiogenèse, dont les mécanismes moléculaires seront discutés

    Economic spill-over of food quality schemes on their territory

    We study the effect of a set of food quality scheme (FQS) products within the local economy using a local multiplier approach based on LM3 methodology. To evaluate the effective contribution within the local area, we compare each FQS product with its equivalent standard/conventional counterpart. Local multiplier allows us to track the financial flows converging within the local area at the different levels of the supply chain so that we can measure the FQS product role in local economic activation. Overall, the FQS products exhibit a higher positive contribution to the local economy than the standard references. However, there is significant heterogeneity in the impact according to the product categories. In the case of vegetal products, the local economic advantage due to FQS is 7% higher than the reference products, but the statistical tests reject the null hypothesis that the medians are significantly different from zero. On the contrary, animal products exhibit a larger contribution of FQS than the standard counterparts (+24%). The PGI products (+25%) produce the major effect, while PDO products show a median difference lower (+6%).     Do food quality schemes and net price premiums go together?

    This article addresses the issue of the profitability of Food Quality Scheme (FQS) products as compared to reference products, which are defined as analogous products without quality label. We approach this question by taking into account the level of the value chain (upstream, processing, and downstream), the sector (vegetal, animal, seafood) and the type of FQS (PGI, PDO, Organic). We collected original data for several products produced in selected European countries, as well as in Thailand and Vietnam. Comparisons depending on value chain level, sector and FQS are possible by using two comparable indicators: price premium and net price premium (including cost differential). The following principal conclusions were reached: 1) Price is higher for FQS products than for the reference products, regardless of the production level, the type of FQS or the sector; 2) Price premiums generated by FQS do not differ along the value chain, nor between sectors (vegetal, animal or seafood/fish); 3) Price premium for organic products is significantly higher than for PGI products, and this conclusion holds at upstream and processing levels, taking into account the costs directly related to production; 4) All organic products and almost all PDO and PGI products analysed benefit from a positive quality rent; 5) At upstream level and processing level, the relative weight of intermediate consumption in the cost structure is lower for organic products than for reference products.Objectius de Desenvolupament Sostenible::12 - ProducciĂł i Consum ResponsablesPostprint (published version

    Algorithmic Complexity for Short Binary Strings Applied to Psychology: A Primer

    Since human randomness production has been studied and widely used to assess executive functions (especially inhibition), many measures have been suggested to assess the degree to which a sequence is random-like. However, each of them focuses on one feature of randomness, leading authors to have to use multiple measures. Here we describe and advocate for the use of the accepted universal measure for randomness based on algorithmic complexity, by means of a novel previously presented technique using the the definition of algorithmic probability. A re-analysis of the classical Radio Zenith data in the light of the proposed measure and methodology is provided as a study case of an application.Comment: To appear in Behavior Research Method

    Benford's law predicted digit distribution of aggregated income taxes: the surprising conformity of Italian cities and regions

    The yearly aggregated tax income data of all, more than 8000, Italian municipalities are analyzed for a period of five years, from 2007 to 2011, to search for conformity or not with Benford's law, a counter-intuitive phenomenon observed in large tabulated data where the occurrence of numbers having smaller initial digits is more favored than those with larger digits. This is done in anticipation that large deviations from Benford's law will be found in view of tax evasion supposedly being widespread across Italy. Contrary to expectations, we show that the overall tax income data for all these years is in excellent agreement with Benford's law. Furthermore, we also analyze the data of Calabria, Campania and Sicily, the three Italian regions known for strong presence of mafia, to see if there are any marked deviations from Benford's law. Again, we find that all yearly data sets for Calabria and Sicily agree with Benford's law whereas only the 2007 and 2008 yearly data show departures from the law for Campania. These results are again surprising in view of underground and illegal nature of economic activities of mafia which significantly contribute to tax evasion.     An advanced Bayesian model for the visual tracking of multiple interacting objects

    Visual tracking of multiple objects is a key component of many visual-based systems. While there are reliable algorithms for tracking a single object in constrained scenarios, the object tracking is still a challenge in uncontrolled situations involving multiple interacting objects that have a complex dynamics. In this article, a novel Bayesian model for tracking multiple interacting objects in unrestricted situations is proposed. This is accomplished by means of an advanced object dynamic model that predicts possible interactive behaviors, which in turn depend on the inference of potential events of object occlusion. The proposed tracking model can also handle false and missing detections that are typical from visual object detectors operating in uncontrolled scenarios. On the other hand, a Rao-Blackwellization technique has been used to improve the accuracy of the estimated object trajectories, which is a fundamental aspect in the tracking of multiple objects due to its high dimensionality. Excellent results have been obtained using a publicly available database, proving the efficiency of the proposed approach
