Development and fabrication of improved Schottky power diodes, phases I and II
Reproducible methods for the fabrication of silicon Schottky diodes were developed for the metals tungsten, aluminum, conventional platinum silicide and low temperature platinum silicide. Barrier heights and barrier lowering were measured permitting the accurate prediction of ideal forward and reverse diode performance. Processing procedures were developed which permit the fabrication of large area (approximately 1 sqcm) mesa-geometry power Schottky diodes with forward and reverse characteristics that approach theoretical values
Rapid Thermalization in Field Theory from Gravitational Collapse
Motivated by the duality with thermalization in field theory, we study
gravitational collapse of a minimally coupled massless scalar field in Einstein
gravity with a negative cosmological constant. We investigate the system
numerically and establish that for small values of the initial amplitude of the
scalar field there is no black hole formation, rather, the scalar field
performs an oscillatory motion typical of geodesics in AdS. For large enough
values of the amplitude of the scalar field we find black hole formation which
we detect numerically as the emergence of an apparent horizon. Using the time
of formation as an estimate for thermalization in the field theory we conclude
that thermalization occurs very rapidly, close to the causal bound for a very
wide range of black hole masses. We further study the thermalization time in
more detail as a function of the amplitude and the width of the initial
Gaussian scalar field profile and detect a rather mild structure.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. v2: References added, improved most grids by a

High velocity spikes in Gowdy spacetimes
We study the behavior of spiky features in Gowdy spacetimes. Spikes with
velocity initially high are, generally, driven to low velocity. Let n be any
integer greater than or equal to 1. If the initial velocity of an upward
pointing spike is between 4n-3 and 4n-1 the spike persists with final velocity
between 1 and 2, while if the initial velocity is between 4n-1 and 4n+1, the
spiky feature eventually disappears. For downward pointing spikes the analogous
rule is that spikes with initial velocity between 4n-4 and 4n-2 persist with
final velocity between 0 and 1, while spikes with initial velocity between 4n-2
and 4n eventually disappear.Comment: discussion of constraints added. Accepted for publication in Phys.

A Charged Rotating Black Ring
We construct a supergravity solution describing a charged rotating black ring
with S^2xS^1 horizon in a five dimensional asymptotically flat spacetime. In
the neutral limit the solution is the rotating black ring recently found by
Emparan and Reall. We determine the exact value of the lower bound on J^2/M^3,
where J is the angular momentum and M the mass; the black ring saturating this
bound has maximum entropy for the given mass. The charged black ring is
characterized by mass M, angular momentum J, and electric charge Q, and it also
carries local fundamental string charge. The electric charge distributed
uniformly along the ring helps support the ring against its gravitational
self-attraction, so that J^2/M^3 can be made arbitrarily small while Q/M
remains finite. The charged black ring has an extremal limit in which the
horizon coincides with the singularity.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur
Numerical simulations of gravitational collapse in Einstein-aether theory
We study gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric scalar field in
Einstein-aether theory (general relativity coupled to a dynamical unit timelike
vector field). The initial value formulation is developed, and numerical
simulations are performed. The collapse produces regular, stationary black
holes, as long as the aether coupling constants are not too large. For larger
couplings a finite area singularity occurs. These results are shown to be
consistent with the stationary solutions found previously.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures; v2: corrected typos, added minor clarifying
