Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) Analyses Of Superelastic And Nonsuperelastic Nickel-Titanium Orthodontic Wires
The purpose of this study was to determine the transformation temperatures for the austenitic, martensitic, and rhombohedral (R) structure phases in representative as-received commercial nitinol (NiTi) orthodontic wire alloys, to reconcile discrepancies among recent publications. Specimens were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) over a temperature range from approximately −170° C to 100° C, with a scanning rate of 10° C per minute. Two different pathways, with the intermediate R structure either absent or present, were observed for the transformation from martensitic to austenitic NiTi, whereas the reverse transformation from austenitic to martensitic NiTi always included the R structure. The enthalpy (ΔH) for the transformation from martensite to austenite ranged from 0.3 to 35 calories per gram. The lowest ΔH value for the nonsuperelastic Nitinol wire is consistent with a largely work-hardened, stable, martensitic microstructure in this product. The DSC results indicate that the transformation processes are broadly similar in superelastic, body-temperature shape-memory, and nonsuperelastic NiTi wires. Differences in bending properties for the NiTi orthodontic wires at room temperature and 37° C are due to the relative proportions of the metallurgical phases in the microstructures
A categorical foundation for Bayesian probability
Given two measurable spaces and with countably generated
-algebras, a perfect prior probability measure on and a
sampling distribution , there is a corresponding inference
map which is unique up to a set of measure zero. Thus,
given a data measurement , a posterior probability
can be computed. This procedure is iterative: with
each updated probability , we obtain a new joint distribution which in
turn yields a new inference map and the process repeats with each
additional measurement. The main result uses an existence theorem for regular
conditional probabilities by Faden, which holds in more generality than the
setting of Polish spaces. This less stringent setting then allows for
non-trivial decision rules (Eilenberg--Moore algebras) on finite (as well as
non finite) spaces, and also provides for a common framework for decision

Graphene formation on SiC substrates
Graphene layers were created on both C and Si faces of semi-insulating,
on-axis, 4H- and 6H-SiC substrates. The process was performed under high vacuum
(<10-4 mbar) in a commercial chemical vapor deposition SiC reactor. A method
for H2 etching the on-axis sub-strates was developed to produce surface steps
with heights of 0.5 nm on the Si-face and 1.0 to 1.5 nm on the C-face for each
polytype. A process was developed to form graphene on the substrates
immediately after H2 etching and Raman spectroscopy of these samples confirmed
the formation of graphene. The morphology of the graphene is described. For
both faces, the underlying substrate morphology was significantly modified
during graphene formation; sur-face steps were up to 15 nm high and the uniform
step morphology was sometimes lost. Mo-bilities and sheet carrier
concentrations derived from Hall Effect measurements on large area (16 mm
square) and small area (2 and 10 um square) samples are presented and shown to

Microwave Current Imaging in Passive HTS Components by Low-Temperature Laser Scanning Microscopy (LTLSM)
We have used the LTLSM technique for a spatially resolved investigation of
the microwave transport properties, nonlinearities and material inhomogeneities
in an operating coplanar waveguide YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} (YBCO) microwave
resonator on an LaAlO_3 (LAO) substrate. The influence of twin-domain blocks,
in-plane rotated grains, and micro-cracks in the YBCO film on the nonuniform rf
current distribution were measured with a micrometer-scale spatial resolution.
The impact of the peaked edge currents and rf field penetration into weak links
on the linear device performance were studied as well. The LTLSM capabilities
and its future potential for non-destructive characterization of the microwave

Which executive functioning deficits are associated with AD/HD, ODD/CD and comorbid AD/HD+ODD/CD?
Item does not contain fulltextThis study investigated (1) whether attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is associated with executive functioning (EF) deficits while controlling for oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD), (2) whether ODD/CD is associated with EF deficits while controlling for AD/HD, and (3)~whether a combination of AD/HD and ODD/CD is associated with EF deficits (and the possibility that there is no association between EF deficits and AD/HD or ODD/CD in isolation). Subjects were 99~children ages 6–12 years. Three putative domains of EF were investigated using well-validated tests: verbal fluency, working memory, and planning. Independent of ODD/CD, AD/HD was associated with deficits in planning and working memory, but not in verbal fluency. Only teacher rated AD/HD, but not parent rated AD/HD, significantly contributed to the prediction of EF task performance. No EF deficits were associated with ODD/CD. The presence of comorbid AD/HD accounts for the EF deficits in children with comorbid AD/HD+ODD/CD. These results suggest that EF deficits are unique to AD/HD and support the model proposed by R. A. Designing a topological algorithm for 3D activity recognition
Voxel carving is a non-invasive and low-cost technique that is used for the reconstruction of a 3D volume from images captured from a set of cameras placed around the object of interest. In this paper we propose a method to topologically analyze a video sequence of 3D reconstructions representing a tennis player performing different forehand and backhand strokes with the aim of providing an approach that could be useful in other sport activities
