Fourier analysis of wave turbulence in a thin elastic plate

The spatio-temporal dynamics of the deformation of a vibrated plate is measured by a high speed Fourier transform profilometry technique. The space-time Fourier spectrum is analyzed. It displays a behavior consistent with the premises of the Weak Turbulence theory. A isotropic continuous spectrum of waves is excited with a non linear dispersion relation slightly shifted from the linear dispersion relation. The spectral width of the dispersion relation is also measured. The non linearity of this system is weak as expected from the theory. Finite size effects are discussed. Despite a qualitative agreement with the theory, a quantitative mismatch is observed which origin may be due to the dissipation that ultimately absorbs the energy flux of the Kolmogorov-Zakharov casade.Comment: accepted for publication in European Physical Journal B see http://www.epj.or

BATSE Observations of Gamma-Ray Burst Tails

I discuss in this paper the phenomenon of post-burst emission in BATSE gamma-ray bursts at energies traditionally associated with prompt emission. By summing the background-subtracted signals from hundreds of bursts, I find that tails out to hundreds of seconds after the trigger may be a common feature of long events (duration greater than 2s), and perhaps of the shorter bursts at a lower and shorter-lived level. The tail component appears independent of both the duration (within the long GRB sample) and brightness of the prompt burst emission, and may be softer. Some individual bursts have visible tails at gamma-ray energies and the spectrum in at least a few cases is different from that of the prompt emission.Comment: 33 Pages from LaTex including 7 figures, with aastex. The Economic Impact Of The Film And Video Production And Distribution Industry On The Charlotte Regional Economy

This report provides measurement of the 2008 economic impacts of the film and video production and distribution industry on the Charlotte regional economy.  Officially known as the Charlotte USA Region, this 16 county area is one of America’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions and supports a well established and expanding film and video production and distribution industry.  Four different types of economic impacts generated by the film and video production and distribution industry were estimated based on the 2008 information. These impacts include: (1) output impacts; (2) employment impacts; (3) employee and freelancers compensation impacts; and (4) value added impacts. The results are disaggregated to identify the direct economic impact of the film and video production and distribution industry, the indirect (supply chain) impact of the industry, and the induced (re-spending) impact of the industry. The total impact of the industry is then the sum of direct, indirect, and induced impacts

Breakdown of Kolmogorov scaling in models of cluster aggregation with deposition

The steady state of the model of cluster aggregation with deposition is characterized by a constant flux of mass directed from small masses towards large masses. It can therefore be studied using phenomenological theories of turbulence, such as Kolmogorov's 1941 theory. On the other hand, the large scale behavior of the aggregation model in dimensions lower than or equal to two is governed by a perturbative fixed point of the renormalization group flow, which enables an analytic study of the scaling properties of correlation functions in the steady state. In this paper, we show that the correlation functions have multifractal scaling, which violates linear Kolmogorov scaling. The analytical results are verified by Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 5 pages 4 figure

FermiFermi GBM Observations of V404 Cyg During its 2015 Outburst

V404 Cygni was discovered in 1989 by the GingaGinga X-ray satellite during its only previously observed X-ray outburst and soon after confirmed as a black hole binary. On June 15, 2015, the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) triggered on a new outburst of V404 Cygni. We present 13 days of GBM observations of this outburst including Earth occultation flux measurements, spectral and temporal analysis. The Earth occultation fluxes reached 30 Crab with detected emission to 100 keV and determined, via hardness ratios, that the source was in a hard state. At high luminosity, spectral analysis between 8 and 300 keV showed that the electron temperature decreased with increasing luminosity. This is expected if the protons and electrons are in thermal equilibrium during an outburst with the electrons cooled by the Compton scattering of softer seed photons from the disk. However, the implied seed photon temperatures are unusually high, suggesting a contribution from another source, such as the jet. No evidence of state transitions is seen during this time period. The temporal analysis reveals power spectra that can be modeled with two or three strong, broad Lorentzians, similar to the power spectra of black hole binaries in their hard state

Estimating The Economic Impact Of Local Cultural Organizations: The Charlotte Arts & Science Council Example

This paper details the impact of the 58 affiliated members of the Charlotte Arts & Science Council on the economy of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. We find that the affiliated members of the Arts & Science Council had a sizable impact on the Mecklenburg economy.  Output was expanded by 129,171,622;earningswereincreasedby129,171,622; earnings were increased by 50,589,999; and employment was increased by 2,132 full-time equivalent jobs.  These economic impacts were an important addition to the rich and varied cultural offerings provided by the Arts & Science Council affiliates
