    Prediction of Postoperative Visual Outcome in Patients with Idiopathic Epiretinal Membrane.

    The aim of this study was to estimate the association between preoperative characteristics in subjects with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) and visual acuity improvement after vitrectomy and create an algorithm for predicting postoperative visual outcome. In a retrospective, cross-sectional study, we included adults with idiopathic ERM and excluded subjects with low-quality scans, other ocular conditions, and previous surgery except cataract surgery. Baseline characteristics were extracted from medical files, spectral-domain OCT, and OCT angiography. Visual improvement was expressed as a binary variable. Fifty-four subjects were included in the study. Three months postoperatively, 30 subjects improved, 10 remained stable, and 14 deteriorated. Spearman correlation showed no correlation between variables and visual acuity improvement (<0.39). Reduced dimensionality showed that baseline visual acuity, lens status, foveal aspect, spherical equivalent, and 2 interactive variables including foveal aspect and lens status have the strongest effect on improvement. Five-fold logistic regression based on these variables provided a model with AUC 0.9 ± 0.06. No variable has a direct predictive role on visual acuity improvement; however, baseline visual acuity, lens status, foveal aspect and spherical equivalent, when combined, provide a predictive model that could serve as a tool for more informed decisions

    Hardware-assisted transaction processing : NVM

    A transaction is a demarcated sequence of application operations, for which the following properties are guaranteed by the underlying transaction processing system (TPS): atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability (ACID). Transactions are therefore a general abstraction, provided by TPS that simplifies application development by relieving transactional applications from the burden of concurrency and failure handling. Apart from the ACID properties, a TPS must guarantee high and robust performance (high transactional throughput and low response times), high reliability (no data loss, ability to recover last consistent state, fault tolerance), and high availability (infrequent outages, short recovery times). The architectures and workhorse algorithms of a high-performance TPS are built around the properties of the underlying hardware. The introduction of nonvolatile memories (NVM) as novel storage technology opens an entire new problem space, with the need to revise aspects such as the virtual memory hierarchy, storage management and data placement, access paths, and indexing. NVM are also referred to as storage-class memory (SCM)

    Frequency and quantity of egg intake is not associated with dyslipidemia: The hellenic national nutrition and health survey (HNNHS)

    Background: Gaps remain on the safety of egg intake on cardiovascular health, setting the study’s aim to investigate the association between quantity and frequency of egg consumption, with established dyslipidemia. Methods: Study participants (N = 3558, 40.3% males) included individuals from the Hellenic National and Nutrition Health Survey (HNNHS), of national representation. Quantity and frequency of egg consumption was determined. Minimally adjusted, multivariable logistic and linear analysis were used to assess egg consumption and dyslipidemia. Results: The more frequent egg consumption compared to no or rare egg consumption significantly decreased the odds of dyslipidemia in the minimally adjusted (Odds Ratio (OR) for frequency: 0.83; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.752, 0.904; OR for quantified frequency: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.796, 0.963) and the fully adjusted models (OR for frequency: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.718, 0.887; OR for quantified frequency: 0.85; 95%CI: 0.759, 0.945). Level of serum cholesterol and LDL-c were significantly lower with higher frequency and quantified frequency of egg consumption in all models. Conclusion: Eggs do not increase the risk of dyslipidemia and can be consumed as part of a healthy diet that is high in fiber and low in saturated fat, without excessive energy intake, by all individuals. © 2019 by the authors.
