Secondary Traumatic Stress:Prevalence and Symptomology Amongst Detective Officers Investigating Child Protection Cases

    Get PDF
It has been increasingly recognised that individuals exposed to the trauma of others within their professional roles can be affected by secondary traumatic stress (STS). Despite this recognition, there is a dearth of literature examining the prevalence of secondary traumatic stress amongst police officers in the UK. This study aims to meet this gap. Sixty-three Detective Officers from Family Protection Units (FPU(s)), primarily engaged in child protection/abuse investigations, self-reported their experiences and symptoms associated with STS through a questionnaire. Findings indicate that over half of the respondents experienced STS symptoms with 11% reporting levels of symptoms that were in the high or severe range. This study is significant in that it provides empirical evidence of issues that have so far been little documented in the UK and considers the implications for policing policy and practice in terms of the health and well-being of serving police officers

    Breast manifestations of systemic diseases

Although much emphasis has been placed on the primary presentations of breast cancer, little focus has been placed on how systemic illnesses may affect the breast. In this article, we discuss systemic illnesses that can manifest in the breast. We summarize the clinical features, imaging, histopathology, and treatment recommendations for endocrine, vascular, systemic inflammatory, infectious, and hematologic diseases, as well as for the extramammary malignancies that can present in the breast. Despite the rarity of these manifestations of systemic disease, knowledge of these conditions is critical to the appropriate evaluation and treatment of patients presenting with breast symptoms

Rational drug combinations with CDK4/6 inhibitors in acute lymphoblastic leukemia

Despite improvements in outcomes for children with B- and T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL and T-ALL), patients with resistant or relapsed disease fare poorly. Previous studies have demonstrated the essential role of cyclin D3 in T-ALL disease initiation and progression and that targeting of the CDK4/6-cyclin D complex can suppress T-ALL proliferation, leading to efficient cell death in animal models. Studies in leukemia and other malignancies, suggest that schedule is important when combining CDK4/6 inhibitors (CDKi) with cytotoxic agents. Based on these observations, we broadened evaluation of two CDKi, palbociclib (PD-0332991, Pfizer) and ribociclib (LEE011, Novartis) in B- and T-ALL as single agent and in combination with conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy, using different schedules in preclinical models. As monotherapy, CDKi caused cell cycle arrest with a significant decrease in S phase entry and were active in vivo across a broad number of patient-derived xenograft samples. Prolonged monotherapy induces resistance, for which we identified a potential novel mechanism using transcriptome profiling. Importantly, simultaneous but not sequential treatment of CDKi with conventional chemotherapy (dexamethasone, L-asparaginase and vincristine) led to improved efficacy compared to monotherapy in vivo. We provide novel evidence that combining CDKi and conventional chemotherapy can be safe and effective. These results led to the rational design of a clinical trial

Headache is associated with lower alcohol consumption among medical students

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between headache and alcohol consumption among medical students. 480 medical students were submitted to a questionnaire about headaches and drinking alcohol. Headache was assessed by ID-Migraine and functional disability was evaluated with MIDAS. The evaluation of alcohol consumption was assessed with Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). There was significantly lower proportion of students with drinking problem among students with headache. This occurred both among students classified as having migraine and among those who had non-migrainous headache. There was not a correlation between functional disability of headache and AUDIT score. Our data suggest that having headache leads to a reduction in alcohol consumption among medical students regardless the degree of headache functional impact
