    OCCURRENCE OF FASCIOLOIDOSIS IN RED DEER (CERVUS ELAPHUS) IN BARANJA REGION IN EASTERN CROATIA

    Fascioloidosis is a parasitic disease caused by the giant American liver fluke Fascioloides magna (Bassi, 1875). In Croatia, the first report of this disease was in January 2000, in red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) from the TikveÅ” Forestry in Baranja region (east Croatia). The aim of this survey was to determine the geographical distribution of fascioloidosis and the infection prevalence in deer. The survey was carried out in six state hunting grounds that manage with deer game in Baranja region during 2001 ā€“ 2004. Parasitological examinations were carried out by qualitative and quantitative faecal exams. The highest prevalenceā€™s (35 ā€“ 60%) were found in epizootic focuses of two hunting grounds at flooding ā€“ bog land area in east Baranja, Danube forestry. The mean intensity of infection, determined on the basis of the number of eggs per gram (EPG) was 30 ā€“ 33 EPG (range 1 ā€“ 300). High 86% of examined samples was in category to 50 EPG. The highest prevalence and the biggest EPG number too, were determined during the first year of survey. In the Baranja area fascioloidosis represents a potential danger for other game species, mainly roe deer and wild boars, as for domestic animals

    Crystal structure analysis of Nd-doped ceria solid solutions

    This paper deals with Nd-doped ceria solid solutions: Ce1-xNdxO2-d with "x" ranging from 0 to 0.25. Six different powders were synthesized by applying the method based on selfpropagating room temperature reaction (SPRT) between metallic nitrates and sodium hydroxide. The method is known to assure very precise stoichiometry of the final product in comparison with a tailored composition. Rietveld refinement was employed to get structural information on the synthesized powder. An increase of Nd ion concentration increases the unit cell parameters and average bond distances. We have shown that all obtained powders were solid solutions with a fluorite-type crystal structure and all powder particles were of nanometric size (about 3 nm)

    Inhibition of Copper Corrosion in NaCl Solution by Propolis Extract

    This study investigates the possibility of corrosion inhibition of copper by propolis extract in 0.51 mol dmā€“3 NaCl solution. The influence of propolis extract concentration and temperature on corrosion behaviour of copper was studied using electrochemical methods. The protective effect of propolis coating deposited on the electrode surface and dried in air was also examined. The results of the study showed that with increasing propolis extract concentration in the solution there was a slight increase in open circuit copper potential to positive values, an increase in polarization resistance, and a decrease in the corrosion current density. A significantly more prominent change of all three of these parameters was observed in the case of propolis coating. Potentiodynamic measurements indicate that propolis extract acts as a mixed corrosion inhibitor, which is adsorbed on the electrode surface according to Langmuirā€™s isotherm. The decrease in inhibition efficiency with increasing temperature indicates physical adsorption. Adsorption of propolis on the electrode surface was confirmed by the spectrophotometric method

    U proteklom petogodiÅ”njem periodu analizirani su slučajevi akutnog zadesnog trovanja ugljikovodonicima u dječijem dobu sa ciljem da se ustanovi stepen toksičnog oÅ”tećenja respiratornog sistema i depresije CNS u zavisnosti od količine unijetog otrova. Razmatrajući klinički nalaz 20 pacijenata otrovanih ugljikovodonicima, zaključili smo da i pri ingestiji manje količine otrova može doći do oÅ”tećenja respiratornog sistema i/ili depresije CNS kao i pri unoÅ”enju veće količine ovog otrova. Zato smatramo da svu djecu otrovanu ovim sredstvima treba hospitalizirati i opservirati.Twenty patients, one to nine years of age, were treated for acute hydrocarbon poisoning in the Pediatric Clinical Hospital, in the period from 1980 to 1984. The clinical course of intoxication, as well as X-ray and laboratory findings showed that even the ingestion of small quantities of the liquid (one or two sips), similarly to poisoning with large amounts, led to respiratory disturbances and CNS depression. The treatment was symptomatic, and all the patients survived, It is suggested that regardless of the amount of hydrocarbon ingested, all patients be hospitalized for observation, and if necessary for treatment

    Effect of dietary supplementation with medium chain fatty acids on growth performance, intestinal histomorphology, lipid profile and intestinal microflora of broiler chickens

    The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) diet supplementation on growth performance, intestinal histomorphology, serum biochemistry and intestinal microflora of broiler chickens. The study was performed on 180 one-day-old broilers of the same origin (Cobb 500 hybrid), over a 42-day period. They were fed diets supplemented with three treatments: control group (basal diet without supplementation); group with MCFA supplementation; and group with MCFA and coccidiostat supplementation. Broiler chickens fed diets supplemented with MCFAs had a significantly greater final bodyweight. The weights of carcass cuts (breast, drumsticks with thighs and wings) were greater in broilers receiving MCFAs than in control broilers. The addition of MCFAs to broiler diet significantly increased villus length and crypt depth in the duodenum and caecum, and significantly decreased villus width in the duodenum and ileum. Additionally, serum HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations were increased significantly in broilers with MCFA dietary supplementation. The results indicated that the MCFA diet supplementation had a beneficial effect on the performance of broiler chickens, their intestinal histomorphology and microflora.Keywords: Carcass characteristics, coccidiostat supplementation, nutrition, poultry, serum biochemistr

    Rehabilitacija glasa kod laringektomiranih bolesnika s ugrađenom govornom protezom; Možemo li doseći 100%?

    Cilj rada: UspjeÅ”nost glasovne rehabilitacije nakon totalne laringektomije varira, ovisno o studiji, od 70 do 95%.PsiholoÅ”ki efekt nemogućnosti govora kod laringektomiranih bolesnika je velik. Početni neuspjeh govorne rehabilitacije s vremenom vodi do stvaranja pogreÅ”nih fonacijskih mehanizama, frustriranosti i deprimiranosti. Cilj rada je dokazati da rana intervencija botulinum toksinom vodi povećanom postotku rehabilitacije. Materijali i metode: U zadnje tri godine u naÅ”em centru učinjene su 64 laringektomije. Kod većine bolesnika (61) učinjena je primarna traheoezofagealna fistulizacija i ugradnja govorne proteze. Kod svih bolesnika logopedska govorna rehabilitacija započeta je rano, uglavnom oko četrnaestog postoperativnog dana. Osam bolesnika imalo je izrazito loÅ” glas ili nemogućnost govora; hipertonicitet je detektiran kao osnovni uzrok. Uz osam navedenih, učinili smo intervenciju kod joÅ” četiri bolesnika iz drugih ustanova. Za razliku od uvriježenog postupnika intenziviranja logopedske terapije i ekspektativnog stava, odmah po obradi započeli smo s intervencijom. Hipertonicitet je potvrđen lidokainskim testom. Svakom bolesniku aplicirano je ukupno 100j botulinum toksina tip A, odnosno u dva navrata po 50j u razmaku od 7-21dana. Mjesto aplikacije određeno je palpacijski, a kod jednog bolesnika ultrazvučno (izrazit edem).Lijek se injektira u Å”est do osam pojedinačnih mjesta. Nismo zabilježili nuspojava aplikacije. Govor je procijenjen pred drugu aplikaciju te mjesec dana po drugoj aplikaciji. Impakt rane intervencije procijenili smo VHI (voice handicap index) i VRQOL (voice-related quality of life) upitnicima, te akustičnim parametrima. Rezultati: Svi bolesnici tretirani botulinum toksinom odgovorili su već na prvu dozu, svi su zadržali kvalitetu glasa u dosadaÅ”njem praćenju i nije bilo potrebe za ponovnom intervencijom botulinum toksinom. Zaključak: Rana intervencija kod laringektomiranih bolesnika s urađenom govornom protezom i nemogućnosti (dostatnog) govora, po naÅ”em iskustvu osigurava odlične rezultate kod svih (selektiranih) bolesnika. Sama metoda nema značajnih nuspojava niti komplikacija kod pažljive primjene.Ovakvim pristupom nadmaÅ”ili smo dosadaÅ”nje postotke uspjeÅ”nosti govora kod laringektomiranih s govornom protezom

    Implementation of the electrohydrodynamicsā€™ perfect dielectric model in OpenFOAMĀ®

    The electrohydrodynamicsā€™ (EHD) perfect dielectric model was added into computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software OpenFOAMĀ® in order to improve its usability for the EHD field and specifically for the mentioned model. Based on the investigated literature, it can be said that this is the most complete implementatiton of the said model. Two sets of numerical simulations with two different fluids are presented and analyzed. One set is one-dimensional. The other set is with a drop of one fluid surrounded by other fluid. Oscillations can be observed with certain expressions or calculation strategies for the electrostrictive force, and used for disregarding them. Results that are closer to analytical predictions can be obtained by using appropriate expression for the dielectric force. The electrostrictive force was implemented not only for nonpolar, but also for polar fluids, and it is shown that it might significantly influence the drop deformation. Calculated and analytically predicted drop deformations were close or comparable even up to around 0.25, what is significantly higher and different from a previous study made by other authors. Different expressions for the electric permittivity and usage of limiters for volume fractions were investigated. Conclusions from this paper can be transferred to more complicated models

    Trophic chain Yersinia pseudotuberculosis

    This paper tries to reproduce two types of trophic chains on the example of an aquatic ecosystem model, with the participation of planktonic and benthic organisms: "yersinia - infusoria - daphnia - fish" and "yersinia - insect larvae - fish". The concentration of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis during primary infection (infusoria culture medium) was 109/ml. In the first hours after infection, the concentration of bacteria in the infusoria decreased (105cfu/mass ). In daphnia, which consumed infected infusoria, the concentration of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis decreases in the first 3-5 days (from 105 to 103 cfu/10 individuals), then the reproduction of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in daphnia continues, and on the 11th day it reaches 107 cfu/10 individuals. The concentration of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in the intestines of fish fed infected daphnia (107cfu/10 individuals) is continuously decreasing: 105 cfu (after 24 hours) and 102-101 cfu/individuals (after 15-30 days)
