"Doubled" generalized Landau-Lifshiz hierarchies and special quasigraded Lie algebras
Using special quasigraded Lie algebras we obtain new hierarchies of
integrable nonlinear vector equations admitting zero-curvature representations.
Among them the most interesting is extension of the generalized Landau-Lifshitz
hierarchy which we call "doubled" generalized Landau-Lifshiz hierarchy. This
hierarchy can be also interpreted as an anisotropic vector generalization of
"modified" Sine-Gordon hierarchy or as a very special vector generalization of
so(3) anisotropic chiral field hierarchy.Comment: 16 pages, no figures, submitted to Journal of Physics
From AKNS to derivative NLS hierarchies via deformations of associative products
Using deformations of associative products, derivative nonlinear Schrodinger
(DNLS) hierarchies are recovered as AKNS-type hierarchies. Since the latter can
also be formulated as Gelfand-Dickey-type Lax hierarchies, a recently developed
method to obtain 'functional representations' can be applied. We actually
consider hierarchies with dependent variables in any (possibly noncommutative)
associative algebra, e.g., an algebra of matrices of functions. This also
covers the case of hierarchies of coupled DNLS equations.Comment: 22 pages, 2nd version: title changed and material organized in a

Lattice vibrations of alpha'-NaV2O5
We have measured far infrared reflectance and transmittance spectra as well
as Raman scattering spectra of \alpha'-NaV2O5 single crystals for all the
principal polarizations. The temperature range above the phase transition
temperature T_c=35 K was investigated, mainly. On the basis of this
experimental study and of the lattice dynamics calculations we conclude that
the symmetry of NaV2O5 in the high temperature phase is described by the
centrosymmetric D_{2h}^{13} space group. The assignment of the observed phonons
is given. Values of dielectric constants are obtained from the infrared data.
Asymmetric shapes of several infrared lines as well as higher order infrared
vibrational spectra are discussed. The crystal field energy levels of the 3d
electron localized at the V^{4+} site have been calculated in the framework of
the exchange charge model using the values of effective charges obtained from
the lattice dynamics calculations. According to the results of these
calculations, the earlier observed broad optical bands in the region of 1 eV
can be interpreted as phonon assisted d-d transitions.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables; submitted to PR
Magnetic bound states in the quarter-filled ladder system }
Raman scattering in the quarter-filled spin ladder system alpha'-NaV_2O_5
shows in the dimerized singlet ground state () an unexpected
sequence of three magnetic bound states. Our results suggest that the recently
proposed mapping onto an effective spin chain for has to be given
up in favor of the full topology and exchange paths of a ladder in the
dimerized phase for . As the new ground state we propose a dynamic
superposition of energetically nearly degenerate dimer configurations on the
ladder.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in PRB, brief reports, Dec. 199
Lattice vibrations of α′-NaV2O5
We have measured far infrared reflectance and transmittance spectra as well as Raman scattering spectra of α′-NaV2O5 single crystals for all the principal polarizations. The temperature range above the phase transition temperature Tc=35 K was investigated, mainly. On the basis of this experimental study and of the lattice dynamics calculations we conclude that the symmetry of NaV2O5 in the high-temperature phase is described by the centrosymmetric D2h 13 space group. This conclusion leads to important physical consequences concerning the interpretation of one-dimensional magnetic properties of NaV2O5 and of the phase transition at 35 K considered earlier to be an ordinary spin-Peierls transition. The assignment of the observed phonons is given. Values of dielectric constants are obtained from the infrared data. Asymmetric shapes of several infrared lines and higher-order infrared vibrational spectra are discussed. The crystal field energy levels of the 3d electron localized at the V4+ site have been calculated in the framework of the exchange charge model using the values of effective charges obtained from the lattice dynamics calculations. According to the results of these calculations, the broad optical bands observed earlier in the vinicity of 1 eV can be interpreted as phonon assisted d-d transitions. © 1999 American Institute of Physics
Using electronic structure changes to map the H-T phase diagram of alpha'-NaV2O5
We report polarized optical reflectance studies of \alpha'-NaV2O5 as a
function of temperature (4-45 K) and magnetic field (0-60 T). Rung directed
electronic structure changes, as measured by near-infrared reflectance ratios
\Delta R(H)=R(H)/R(H=0 T), are especially sensitive to the phase boundaries. We
employ these changes to map out an H-T phase diagram. Topological highlights
include the observation of two phase boundaries slightly below T_{SG}, enhanced
curvature of the 34 K phase boundary above 35 T, and, surprisingly, strong
hysteresis effects of both transitions with applied field.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, PRB accepte

Low temperature ellipsometry of NaV2O5
The dielectric function of alpha'NaV2O5 was measured with electric field
along the a and b axes in the photon energy range 0.8-4.5 eV for temperatures
down to 4K. We observe a pronounced decrease of the intensity of the 1 eV peak
upon increasing temperature with an activation energy of about 25meV,
indicating that a finite fraction of the rungs becomes occupied with two
electrons while others are emptied as temperature increases. No appreciable
shifts of peaks were found s in the valence state of individual V atoms at the
phase transition is very small. A remarkable inflection of this temperature
dependence at the phase transition at 34 K indicates that charge ordering is
associated with the low temperature phase.Comment: Revisions in style and order of presentation. One new figure. In

Folded modes in the infrared spectra of the spin-Peierls phase of CuGeO_3
Polarized far-infrared transmittance spectra of CuGeO_3 single crystals were
measured at different temperatures (6K < T < 300K). Two spectral lines, at
284.2 cm-1 in E||c polarization and at 311.7 cm-1 in E||b polarization, appear
at the temperature of the spin-Peierls transition and grow in intensity with
decreasing temperature. Both of them are, most probably, folded modes of the
dimerized lattice. We discuss a possible role of the spin-phonon interaction in
the formation of the 311.7 cm-1 feature.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 1 table; Submitted to Phys.Rev.B Second revision.

High frequency dielectric and magnetic anomaly at the phase transition in NaV2O5
We found anomalies in the temperature dependence of the dielectric and the
magnetic susceptibiliy of NaV_2O_5 in the microwave and far infrared frequency
ranges. The anomalies occur at the phase transition temperature T_c, at which
the spin gap opens. The real parts of the dielectric constants epsilon_a and
epsilon_c decrease below T_c. The decrease of epsilon_a (except for the narrow
region close to T_c) is proportional to the intensity of the x-ray reflection
appearing at T_c. The dielectric constant anomaly can be explained by the
zigzag charge ordering in the ab-plane appearing below T_c. The anomaly of the
microwave magnetic losses is probably related to the coupling between the spin
and charge degrees of freedom in vanadium ladders.Comment: 3 PS-figures, LATEX-text, new experimental data added, typos
