    Get PDF
This study is devoted to preparation and characterization of nano-keratin based binder (NKBB) from cheap renewable natural resources, namely coarse Egyptian wool or feather. The prepared NKBB is utilized as a biodegradable, environment-friendly and relatively cheap binder in textile pigment printing of polyester, pure polyacrylic, viscose, polyester/viscose, and polyester/acrylic fabrics. Different concentrations of the prepared NKBB as well as its mixture with commercially produced one are used in the pigment printing paste. The colour strength of the printed fabrics as well as their fastness properties to light, washing, and perspiration are evaluated. The effect of the used binder on the bending stiffness of the printed fabrics is also assessed. Results show that the NKBB gives almost the same colour strength and fastness properties as the commercial binder with improved stiffness of the printed samples in relation to that printed with commercial one

The suggested method consists in heating the reducing sugar with a 0.1 M Hg(II)-EDTA solution. Unconsumed Hg(II) is then determined without filtration, by adding an excess of 0.1 M sodium sulphide solution and back-titrating excess sulphide with aO.l M Hg(II)-EDTA solution. The end point is detected by potentiometry, using a sulphide-selective electrode. If heating is carried out on the water bath, the reaction between Hg(II) and sugar is completed in 30 minutes. Amounts of 12 — 42 mg of reducing sugar are determined with 10 ml of 0.1 M Hg(II)-EDTA solution with an average error of +1 — 2%. The method is not affected by the presence of metallic mercury.

Background: The various neurological disorders pose a significant proportion of morbidity and mortality among children. They pose significant social and economic challenges as well. Aim of work: To identify the spectrum of neurological disorders among the children attending The Pediatric Neurology Clinic at Children’s Hospital, Cairo University. Methods: Analysis of data of the files of all patients attending the Pediatric Neurology Clinic over a period of 6 months from May 2019 till November 2019. All patients younger than 14 years old were included. Results: A total of 2819 patients with different neurological disorders were seen during this time interval, their mean (+/- Standard Deviation) age was 9.13 +/-7.02 years with a male predominance 59.9% vs 40.1% females. Epilepsy was the most common neurological disorder encountered accounting for about 778 cases (27.6%), whereas global developmental delay for differential diagnosis accounted for 480 cases (17.03%), followed by metabolic disorders (10.7%) and cerebral palsy (7.24%). Conclusion: There is a wide spectrum of childhood neurological disorders among our studied population that demands multidisciplinary team involvement for diagnosis, management and follow up. Our endeavor is challenged by the shortness of professionally trained manpower, as well as limited financial resources for proper access to expensive therapies, all pose great challenge in dealing with patients with neurological disorders in our country

Nowadays, we need to develop eco-friendly nanoparticles synthesis process that does not use toxic chemicals in the synthesis methods. Biological synthesis of nanomaterials is cheaper, innovative and environmental friendly. From this point, the present study focused on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles from the extracts of Ulva lactuca, Sargassum denticulatum, Spirulina platensis and Chlorella vulgaris. Characterizations were performed by UV-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and particle morphology, and size of silver nanoparticles were observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM) It was found spherical shaped nanoparticles sizes with average diameter of approximately 20,78.8, 31 and 50 nm from the extracts of the four algal species (Ulva lactuca, Sargassum denticulatum, Chlorella vulgaris and Spirulina platensis), respectively. So, the extracts from algae were screened for phytochemicals analysis followed by FT-IR to know the present chemical functional groups. Therefore, the present study illustrates silver nanoparticles can play an influential role in nanobiotechnology field in future

Phase Separation in Ge-Rich GeSbTe at Different Length Scales: Melt-Quenched Bulk versus Annealed Thin Films

Integration of the prototypical GeSbTe (GST) ternary alloys, especially on the GeTe-Sb2Te3 tie-line, into non-volatile memory and nanophotonic devices is a relatively mature field of study. Nevertheless, the search for the next best active material with outstanding properties is still ongoing. This search is relatively crucial for embedded memory applications where the crystallization temperature of the active material has to be higher to surpass the soldering threshold. Increasing the Ge content in the GST alloys seems promising due to the associated higher crystallization temperatures. However, homogeneous Ge-rich GST in the as-deposited condition is thermodynamically unstable, and phase separation upon annealing is unavoidable. This phase separation reduces endurance and is detrimental in fully integrating the alloys into active memory devices. This work investigated the phase separation of Ge-rich GST alloys, specifically Ge5Sb2Te3 or GST523, into multiple (meta)stable phases at different length scales in melt-quenched bulk and annealed thin film. Electron microscopy-based techniques were used in our work for chemical mapping and elemental composition analysis to show the formation of multiple phases. Our results show the formation of alloys such as GST213 and GST324 in all length scales. Furthermore, the alloy compositions and the observed phase separation pathways agree to a large extent with theoretical results from density functional theory calculations

EMT Markers in Locally-Advanced Prostate Cancer: Predicting Recurrence?

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most frequent cause of cancer-related death in men worldwide. It is a heterogeneous disease at molecular and clinical levels which makes its prognosis and treatment outcome hard to predict. The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) marks a key step in the invasion and malignant progression of PCa. We sought to assess the co-expression of epithelial cytokeratin 8 (CK8) and mesenchymal vimentin (Vim) in locally-advanced PCa as indicators of EMT and consequently predictors of the progression status of the disease. Methods: Co-expression of CK8 and Vim was evaluated by immunofluorescence (IF) on paraffin-embedded tissue sections of 122 patients with PCa who underwent radical prostatectomies between 1998 and 2016 at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC). EMT score was calculated accordingly and then correlated with the patients' clinicopathological parameters and PSA failure. Results: The co-expression of CK8/Vim (EMT score), was associated with increasing Gleason group. A highly significant linear association was detected wherein higher Gleason group was associated with higher mean EMT score. In addition, the median estimated biochemical recurrence-free survival for patients with < 25% EMT score was almost double that of patients with more than 25%. The validity of this score for prediction of prognosis was further demonstrated using cox regression model. Our data also confirmed that the EMT score can predict PSA failure irrespective of Gleason group, pathological stage, or surgical margins. Conclusion: This study suggests that assessment of molecular markers of EMT, particularly CK8 and Vim, in radical prostatectomy specimens, in addition to conventional clinicopathological prognostic parameters, can aid in the development of a novel system for predicting the prognosis of locally-advanced PCa
