Signatures of Supersymmetry in B Decays - A Theoretical Perspective

    Get PDF
We discuss precision tests of the standard model in radiative and semileptonic rare B-decays and CP-violating asymmetries, and possible signatures of supersymmetry in these processes. Motivated by current data, and with an eye on the forthcoming measurements, we restrict ourselves to the processes in which the bench marks set by the standard model have either been met by ongoing experiments or are expected to be met shortly. This includes the mixing-induced CP asymmetry, measured through sin2β\sin 2 \beta, and branching ratios for the radiative and semileptonic rare decays BXsγB \to X_s \gamma, BKγB \to K^* \gamma, BXs+B \to X_s \ell^+ \ell^- and B(K,K)+B \to (K,K^*) \ell^+ \ell^-, where ±=e±,μ±\ell^\pm =e^\pm, \mu^\pm.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures (requires sprocl.sty and epsf); invited talk, to be published in the proceedings of the International Conference on Flavor Physics ICFP2001, Zhang-Jia-Jie City, Peoples Republic of China, May 31 - June 6, 200

Convergence of Corporate Governance and Islamic Financial Services Industry: Toward Islamic Financial Services Securities Market

    Get PDF
This paper briefly discusses the significance of corporate governance for the Islamic financial services industry. Furthermore, it predicts that the Islamic financial services industry is likely to converge to modern governance practices. The paper also argues that the industry needs to have a homogenous and specialized regional securities market to realize its true potential

Inequality and the Dynamics of Poverty and Growth

    Get PDF
This paper models the dynamic interactions between growth and distribution in the analysis of the behavior of poverty over time. The model permits formal analysis of the factors that led to the growth collapse as well as the rise in poverty in Africa and other developing regions, except Asia, during 1975-96 period. Using indicators of average country performance during this period-- in terms of the rate of acceleration of growth, changes in poverty and extent of inequality—the model suggests tentative strategies for dealing with poverty. The main policy recommendation of this analysis is that, for the majority of countries—36 out of 47—any serious strategy for poverty reduction must include both policies for accelerating growth as well as measures for effecting more equitable income distribution. Moreover, the latter must be sufficiently deep either to shake-off the "transitional", though lingering, "low equilibrium trap" that characterizes some economies; or to more others from the "bad" equilibrium of stationary, but high, poverty.

Is Helicobacter Pylori Associated with a Migraine?

Objective: To determine whether Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is associated with migraine headache. Design: Case-control study. Settings: Local tertiary Hospitals in Cairo, Egypt and in HaferAlbaten, Saudi Arabia. Participants: A total of 70 patients with migraine who were 7 to 17 years old and who fulfilled the International Headache Society criteria for migraine and a total of 50 controls without migraine who were matched by the country of origin, age, sex, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status to the 70 migraine cases. Main Outcome Measures: Antibody levels to H. pylori (IgG) and H. pylori stool antigens were compared between the two groups. Results: Significant association was found between H. pylori and migraine and of the total of 70 migraineur cases, 55.7% were positive for H. pylori stool antigen testing compared to 20% in control group (P value=0.0002). Joint pain was reported in 44.3% and 18.0% of cases and controls respectively (P value=0.0034). Conclusion: H. pylori is associated with migraine without aura and may be a causative factor. Moreover, H. pylori may induce joint pain in the migraineur patients

    A non-reductive N=4 superconformal algebra

A new N=4 superconformal algebra (SCA) is presented. Its internal affine Lie algebra is based on the seven-dimensional Lie algebra su(2)\oplus g, where g should be identified with a four-dimensional non-reductive Lie algebra. Thus, it is the first known example of what we choose to call a non-reductive SCA. It contains a total of 16 generators and is obtained by a non-trivial In\"on\"u-Wigner contraction of the well-known large N=4 SCA. The recently discovered asymmetric N=4 SCA is a subalgebra of this new SCA. Finally, the possible affine extensions of the non-reductive Lie algebra g are classified. The two-form governing the extension appearing in the SCA differs from the ordinary Cartan-Killing form.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX, version to be publishe
