Integrated sustainable performance management systems: A case study on Italian benefit corporations

    No full text
Today, to integrate sustainable development goals into business, an overall integrated sustainable performance management system — to implement and measure these global goals — is needed. In a short timeframe, the benefit impact assessment (BIA) — elaborated by B Lab, utilized by benefit corporations (a new and emerging hybrid type of prosocial business) and adopted by the United Nations — became the most comprehensive indicator to evaluate company practices against SDGs. Italy was the first sovereign country to insert the benefit corporation legislation after the US and analyze the effectiveness of the BIA. This prompted us to address our attention to the integration of benefit-driven indicators, adopted by Italian B Corps into their performance management systems, and to analyze if these indicators are used by managers to support internal decision-making. To achieve this goal, cross-sector semi-structured interviews were conducted in seven Italian certified benefit corporations. Relevant to both researchers and practitioners, our review provides a useful snapshot of how the BIA is developing as an assessment and how value-based organizations are moving toward an integrated sustainable performance management syste

ODP-LEG 161 drills the Western Mediterranean

Leg 767 drilled a transect of six sites in the Western Mediterranean. Sites 974 (Tyrrhenian Basin) and 975 (Menorca Rise, South-Balearic Basin) were dedicated to paleoceanography and Sites 976, 977, 978, 979 (Alboran Basin) focused on tectonic goals but also involved paleoceanographic studies. A total length of 3.9 km of sediment and rock cores were collected from nearly 7 kilometer below the sea floor. One of the most Intriguing paleoceanographic results of Leg 767 was the discovery of sapropels in the Western Mediterranean. Pleistocene sapropels were recovered at Site 974 and Site 975, and Pleistocene organic-rich layers at Sites 976, 977, and 979. Site 976 cored 258.97 m of high-grade metamorphic rocks down into the basement, and demonstrates that the basement beneath the Alboran Sea is formed by rocks of continental origin that have undergone exhumation and decompression. Sites 977, 978 and 979 cored through a zone of structures within the sedimentary sequence, yielded information on the compressive post-Messinian tectonic reorganization of the Alboran basi

Peak identification for PCDD/Fs in environmental samples at different temperature programs

    No full text
A method has been developed for peak recognition of 136 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) at different temperature programs. Their retention behaviours are predicted on the basis of an identification database of retention values (A, B) of gas chromatography. By the retention times of C-13 labelled 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/F internal standards, the retentions of all PCDDs and PCDFs can be calculated. After comparison with the retentions of practical environmental samples, the predicted values have been proved to be very accurate. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

A column method for determination of soil organic partition coefficients of eight pesticides

    No full text
A column method was developed to conveniently and reliably determine the soil organic partition coefficients (K-oc) of three insecticides (methiocarb, azinphos-methyl, fenthion), four fungicides (triadimenol, fuberidazole, tebuconazole, pencycuron), and one herbicide (atrazine), in which real soil acted as a stationary phase and the water solution of pesticide as an eluent. The processes of sorption equilibrium were directly shown through a breakthrough curve(BTC). The log K-oc values are 1.69, 1.95, 2.25, 2.55, 2.69, 2.67, 3.10, and 3.33 for atrazine, triadimenol, methiocarb, fuberidazole, azinphos-methyl, tebuconazole, fenthion and pencycuron, respectively

Quantitative relationship between chromatographic retentions and molecular structures of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs)

    No full text
A new approach to study the quantitative relationships between chromatographic retentions and molecular structures of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) is described. The retention equations of PCDDs log k' = A + B/T in gas chromatography (GC) are used to evaluate the properties of the regression coefficients A and B, which have been widely accepted as highly reliable chromatographic retentions. The quantitative relationships between the A, B values and the molecular structures are found. The molecular descriptors given for the first time in this article are very effective. As a result, the regression equations are derived with correlation coefficients greater than 0.9995. The A, B values of PCDDs with no standards available have been predicted according to these relationships. They are very useful in chromatographic identification. The retention times of all PCDDs can be conveniently predicted at any temperature program. Compared with the data obtained from the relevant experiments, the results of prediction are very accurate.
