    Philological Study of Ŭijŏk and Ŭiil's Pŏphwa kyŏngnon sulgi (3)

    The Pŏphwa kyŏngnon sulgi 法華経論述記 (Sulgi)is a commentary on the Miaofa lianhua jing youbotishe 妙法蓮華経優婆提舎, supposed to have been written before 753 CE. Unfortunately, since only the beginning parts of the first and the second chapters of this text have come down to us, little attention has been given to it. The present paper aims at a textual analysis of the Sulgi. Although it has been pointed out that a folding book of the Sulgi is preserved in the Kyoto University Library, the existence of another version of the Sulgi remains unknown to scholars. I have revealed that there is a extant rolled scroll (巻子本) of the Sulgi in the Shōgozō 聖語蔵 of the Shōsōin 正倉院. The text of the Sulgi is ascribed to two Buddhist monks: the first half of the text to a Silla monk named Ŭijŏk 義寂, the latter half of the text to a monk named Ŭiil 義一. Previous studies, nonetheless, without taking this fact into account, have ascribed the Sulgi to Ŭijŏk. In the present paper, focusing on the text ascribed to Ŭijŏk, I have considered the textual features of the Sulgi. It is well-known that the Sulgi was written under the influence of the Fahua lunshu 法華論疏 of Jizang 吉蔵 (549-623 CE) and the Miaofa lianhua jing xuanzan 妙法蓮華経玄賛 of Ji 基 (632-684 CE). A closer scrutiny of the text of the Sulgi, makes it clear that Ŭijŏk was also conversant with the theory expounded in the Miaofa lianhua jing zuanshu 妙法蓮華経纘述 (Zuanshu) of Huijing 慧浄 (578-645? CE).     Zigzag persistence for image processing: New software and applications

    Topological image analysis is a powerful tool for understanding the structure and topology of images, being persistent homology one of its most popular methods. However, persistent homology requires a chain of inclusions of topological spaces, which can be challenging for digital images. In this article, we explore the use of zigzag persistence, a recent variant of traditional persistence, for digital image processing. To this end, new algorithms are developed to build a simplicial complex associated to a digital image and to compute the relationships between homology classes of a sequence of binary images via zigzag persistence. Additionally, we provide a simple software to use them. We demonstrate its effectiveness by applying it to a real-world problem of analyzing honey bee sperm videos

    Analysis of Varroa Mite Colony Infestation Level Using New Open Software Based on Deep Learning Techniques

    Varroa mites, scientifically identified as Varroa destructor, pose a significant threat to beekeeping and cause one of the most destructive diseases affecting honey bee populations. These parasites attach to bees, feeding on their fat tissue, weakening their immune systems, reducing their lifespans, and even causing colony collapse. They also feed during the pre-imaginal stages of the honey bee in brood cells. Given the critical role of honey bees in pollination and the global food supply, controlling Varroa mites is imperative. One of the most common methods used to evaluate the level of Varroa mite infestation in a bee colony is to count all the mites that fall onto sticky boards placed at the bottom of a colony. However, this is usually a manual process that takes a considerable amount of time. This work proposes a deep learning approach for locating and counting Varroa mites using images of the sticky boards taken by smartphone cameras. To this end, a new realistic dataset has been built: it includes images containing numerous artifacts and blurred parts, which makes the task challenging. After testing various architectures (mainly based on two-stage detectors with feature pyramid networks), combination of hyperparameters and some image enhancement techniques, we have obtained a system that achieves a mean average precision (mAP) metric of 0.9073 on the validation set
