Letters from a Means of Governance to Resistance : Focusing on the Western Middle Ages

문자가 발명되고 그 사용이 드물었던 시대에 예수는 구전으로 복음을 전한다. 예수의 시대에 문자의 사용자는 극소수였고, 문자를 기록하는 매체가 귀한 시대였다. 예수의 말씀은 곧 문자로 기록되어 경전으로 발전되었으며, 경전을 해석하고 보존하는 임무를 성직자들이 맡게 되었다. 그들이 문자로 기록된 성서와 중세의 공용어였던 라틴어를 독점하고, 그것을 수단으로 평신도와 대다수가 문맹인 백성들을 지배했다. 대학의 설립, 종이의 유입, 도시계급의 성장 등은 문자를 매체로 중세를 지배했던 교회와 수도원의 권력을 약화시켰다. 문자사용을 독점하고 있었던 교회는 여러 가지 방법을 동원해서 평신도를 통제하려고 노력했다. 그 대표적 사례가 성서금지 정책이었다. 성서가 이해하기 어렵고, 왜곡의 위험도 항시 도사리고 있기 때문에 평신도는 성서를 구입하거나 읽지 말고, 교회를 통해 성서를 이해하라는 것이 성서금지 정책의 주 내용인데, 특히 성서가 독일어같은 민중어로 번역되는 것을 엄격히 통제하였다. 그러나 이런 정책은 인쇄술의 도움으로 문자사용이 엄청나게 증가함으로써 유지하기 힘든 정책이 되었다. 문자가 소수의 독점으로 인한 지배의 매체에서 다수의 사용을 통한 저항의 매체로 변신하게 되었다. 이런 역사적 사실의 결과물이 종교개혁이다. 인쇄술이라는 대량복제 기술과 종교개혁이라는 성서 다시읽기 운동을 통해 문자는 예술품에서 대중매체로 거듭나게 되었다.In an age when written language was new and sparsely used, the Gospel was spread orally by Jesus Christ. The words of Christ were soon put down into what became scriptures; and the job of interpreting and preserving the holy words fell on the clergy. They monopolized the written scripture and Latin - the mediaeval common tongue - thereby holding dominance over the laymen and the largely illiterate commoners. The establishment of universities and growth of the urban population undermined the churches and monasteries. The exclusive employers of scripture attempted to control the laymen through various means. A case in point was the prohibition of bibles. However, such policies disintegrated, as the use of the written language jumped with the advent of the printing technology. The lettering system had transformed from a governing tool of the exclusive to a means of resistance by the masses

An Evaluation for 'Munhwa-Maul Project's Effectiveness as Rural Settlement System Improvement Policy

본 연구는 농촌 취락체계 개선정책으로서 문화마을 조성사업의 실효성을 평가하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 강원도 횡성군 우천면우항 1리, 충청북도 단양군 대강면두음리, 그리고 충청남도 청양군 목면 대평1리에 조성된 문화마을을 연구지역으로 하였으며, 그게 4가지 측면에 대해 살펴보았다. 첫째, 세 사례지역의 문화마을 조성과정과 그 과정을 통해 문화마을이 가지는 사회경제적 및 공간적 특성을 파악하고, 둘째, 입지의 타당성 측면과 면 지역주민의 입주율 측면에서 접근하여 목표와 실행 결과간의 차이를 고찰하고, 섯째, 목표달성의 제약요인들을 실행과정의 각 단계별로 분석하여, 마지막으로 이상의 결과를 토대로 취락체게 개선책으로서 문화마을 조성사업의 실효성 제고를 위한 개선방안을 제시하였다. 문화마을 조성사업은 중심마을의 육성을 통한 취락체계의 개선을 지향하고 있으나, 실행과정에서 나타나는 여러 가지 제약요인들로 인하여 나타나는 실제 효과는 취락의 내부구조(생활환경) 개선에 그치는 경향이 있어 취락체계 개선책으로서 실효성의 문제가 제기된다고 할 수 있다. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of 'Munhwa-Maul Project' as rural settlement system improvement policy and to attempt to find the guiding directions for enhancing the effectiveness of this policy. The Wcxx:hon project site in Kangwon Province, the Daegang project site in Chungchong North Province, and the Mok-Myeon project site in ChungchOng South Province were selected for case study. For this purpose, first, the process of the project's implementation and the socio-economic, spatial characters of three sites made by the process, second, on the basis of the a'oove results, the gap between goal and outrome of 'Munhwa-Maul Project' in that where the project site is located in the Myeon settlement system and how many residents of Myeon moved in, third, the constraints of goal achievement by each step of implementation process, and fourth, the guiding directions to enhance the effectiveness of 'Munhwa-Maul Project' as settlement system improvement policy, are examined. 'Munhwa-Maul Project' is intended as rural settlement system improvement policy, but the effect caused by outcome tends to be focused on improvement of inner structure of settlement(or living environment). This means that 'Munhwa-Maul Project' has resulted in some ineffectiveness as rural settlement system improvement policy
