A study of health information that patient needs
Chang, Sung Hee
Department of Nursing, Graduate School of Yonsei University
(directed by Professor Kang, Kyu Sook,)
An individual should understand his current health problem and the implications
of the illness for his life style if he is to regain and maintain optimal health.
Recent literature also has emphasized the important role which nurse can play in
keeping with emerging health care philosophy which recognizes that promotion of
health and prevention of disease are as important in the concept of comprehensive
nursing care as is treatment of illness.
Therefore the nurse bears the primary responsibility for assisting the
hospitalized patient to verbalize his learning needs as he sees them and for the
identification of additional information needs implied in observable behavior.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the kinds of health information that
patients want to know, and to analysis that patients place higher priority on some
information than on other and that there were difference among patients related to
the variances under consideration.
The study was conducted on 86 medical and surgical patient in K hospital and they
were selected by convenient sampling method. the data for this study was collected
through direct-interview method during the period covering November 18 through
November 24, 1980. The measuring instrument was used 7 openhanded questions
designed by dodge to investigation the kinds of health information that they want
to know.
Data analysis included percentage, T-test, ANOVA.
The Results and considerations are as follows.
1. The kinds of health information needed by patient
There was a total of 38 different information spontaneously expressed by the
patients and the mean of the kinds of health information expressed by one patient
was 3.76.
2. Rate distribution on 38 health information
The highest rate on 38 health information needed by patient was "about his
certain diagnosis," 41.9% and the second was "about general explanation of his
illness."
3. The relationships between the kinds of health information needed by patients
and the related variables.
The variables significantly related to the kinds of health information needed by
patient were sex, hospitalized experience and education.
4. Priority of health information contents needed by patients.
Rank of 1 was "about his certain diagnosis."
Rank of 2 was "about general explanation of his illness." Rank of 3 was "about
improvement of illness," Rank of 4 was "about taking care of his health after
discharge. According to sex, nature of involvement, hospitalized experience,
Marriage, education and age, there was difference of priority of health information
contents needed by patients.
5. Priority of health information categories needed by patients.
Rank of 1 was "diagnosis." Rank of 2.5 was "Time Concernes" and "Self-care."
Rank of 4 was "Seriousness." According to sex nature of involvement, hospitalized
experience, marriage, education and age, there was difference of priority of health
information categories needed by patients.restrictio
