Radiotherapeutic Options for Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Portal Vein Tumor Thrombosis
Portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT) is a common paraneoplastic condition in advanced primary hepatocellular carcinoma or hepatobiliary tract malignancies. Tumors with PVTT are frequently associated with adverse and aggressive features such as intrahepatic tumor dissemination, early treatment failure, or deterioration of hepatic function. Therefore, the treatment outcomes for PVTT in historical series are often dismal and discouraging. More recently, beneficial effects and excellent outcomes of external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) for treating this disease have been reported, and the use of EBRT is becoming more common because of the non-invasive nature of RT and rapid advances in RT technology. We hope to be able to cure this devastating condition in the near future with more advanced and efficacious disease management strategies. The current status and clinical trial results for EBRT as a promising treatment option for managing PVTT will be discussed here.ope

Democracy will blossom when its institutionalization is completed and its spiritualization is incarnated. Greek tragedies take special care of the spirit of democracy because they are not simply literary works but texts for political education. They do not make direct expressions on the merits of Athenian democracy, but give us the democratic teachings by dealing with the problems raised in such rival cities as Thebes, Argos and Kolchis and suggesting their solutions with the metaphor of Athens. Analyzing that metaphor shown in the texts of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, we can realize that democratic spirit includes the reconciliation among strangers as political justice, the endurance of dual identity as law-legislator and law-breaker, and the membership open for those who respect the regime regardless of their nationality.μ΄ λ

Despite active research on Alzheimers disease (AD), single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified so far only partially, explain the heritability of AD. Here, our goal was to identify genetic variants of AD-related traits in Koreans through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
[Methods]
We conducted genome-wide association studies (GWASs) on the hippocampus, entorhinal, inferior parietal, middle temporal, and superior frontal regions in Koreans. GWASs were conducted with and without adjustment for effects of Apolipoprotein E (APOE). For significantly associated SNPs, they were replicated with the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) and European Union AddNeuroMed and we compared the standardized uptake value ratio using amyloid positron emission tomography (PET). We also summarized five cognitive traits by genotypes using the Seoul Neuropsychological Screening Battery (SNSB).
[Results]
For our discovery GWAS, we found that rs77359862 near SHANK-associated RH Domain Interactor (SHARPIN) was significantly associated with entorhinal and hippocampus traits (P = 5.0Γγ10γ^(-9) and 5.1Γγ10γ^(-12), respectively). Gene-based analyses for SHARPIN with ADNI and AddNeuroMed data were consistent with the significant discovery analysis result (P = 0.002 and 0.044, respectively). Furthermore, rs77359862 affects amyloid beta accumulation and has significant differences between carrier and non-carrier groups on frontal memory regions in the SNSB data.
[Discussion]
We found that SHARPIN was significantly associated with the entorhinal and hippocampus, indicating that SHARPIN may have an important role in the pathogenesis of AD.[λ°° κ²½]

D. dissertation) "A Critique on Mancur Olson's Behavior Theory," History and Society, Vol. 3, No. 21(December 1998) Feminism looks for the emancipation of the feminine from the patriarchic domination. Insofar as it searches for the destruction of patriarchy, feminism can be viewed as "postmodern." However, a dilemma comes that insofar as it directs toward the establishment of feminity as subject, feminism can also be doubted as compatible with the postmodern slogan of "the decentering of the subject." "Postfeminist" feminists deal seriously with this dilemma. Their claims are summarized as follows: First, while he agrees with the Foucauldian genealogical destruction of patriarchy, Isaac D. Balbus warns against the Foucauldian decentering of feminity as subject because the repudiation of subject simply results disciplining women. Second, Drucilla Cornell and Adam Thurschwell state that the rigid gender dichotomy serves as ideology and that the sexes are the relational selves. According to them, the subjectivity of feminity cannot easily be determined as something because the feminine is intersubjectively formulated in relation with the masculine. Third, Judith Butler takes one more step. According to her, feminity as subject cannot be achieved on the fixed foundation, because the feminine is reproduced within from the interior of feminity in which the feminine is permanently open and contested for the resignification of feminity itself. Conclusively, the subjectivity of women is needed as a political identity for their emancipation, but it is not an essential, but simply an "ad hoc," subjectivity which possesses a political intention. The universality of feminity as subject should be understood in relation not only with masculinity but with the indeterminate openness of feminity itself

Global ethics is desperately needed in the age of globalization in which the diversity of conflicts and clashes frequently occurs. The arguments of Hans KΓΌng and Emmanuel Levinas are helpful for its understanding. Above all, KΓΌng sees that global ethics as the minimal principle for global citizens may be established by incarnating religious attitudes. In other words, men may be ethical when they have the piety to the transcendental God toward whom the individual man exceeds himself. In the real world, however, the basic problem lies in the fact that the transcendental religions are conflicting and even fighting each other. Therefore, the first thing 10 do is to have dialogues among religions, without which there is no peace. On the other hand, Levinas contends that violences in the modem world are theoretically derived from the concept of 'modem subject" that pursues unity
and totality. In order to overcome them. therefore, we have to repudiate the modern epistemology in which I reduce others to my own representation, and to accept the idea that others are recognized as others themselves in my 'jouissance' of the world. In such an attitude I am infinitely responsible for the others. and I and others will make the concept of Β·we: The ideas of KΓΌng and Levinas are very insightful, but in a sense unsatisfiable because they do not take into account the political that lies ahead of the ethical. Ethics as that which are relational among men is achievable when political democracy proceeds in the real world.μ΄ λ
