Intercultural communicative competence model and English language assessment

The purpose of this paper is to value the intercultural communicative competence model in English language assessment. As for intercultural communication, it becomes of utmost importance that (1) the inappropriateness of the conventional communicative competence models be demonstrated, and (2) altemative models from interculturally communicative needs be proposed and their use defended. Qualitative methodolgy and narrative inquiry are needed to make the assessment of intercultural communicative competence press forward in Korea

Rebuilding Korean studies' curricula based on culture, the arts, the storytelling

외국인 유학생, 결혼이민자, 외국 국적 동포가 증가하고 있고 한류의 세계적인 진출이 확장되고 있다. 한국어를 국제어로 사용하고자 하는 인력의 요구도 있고, 기업과 정부의 지원, 한류 콘텐츠의 소비 규모도 성장하고 있다. 바야흐로 한국학을 고등교육으로 발전시킬 수 있는 학술적 토대가 구축되고 있다. 본 연구는 그간의 한국학 전공이 학교 밖에서 소비되고 디지털 매체 위에서 새롭게 생성·편집되고 있는 한류와 대중문화 콘텐츠, 한국의 문화유산이나 예술작품 등이 교육내용으로 다뤄지지 않은 점에 주목하여 이를 한국학 교육과정의 재설계에 반영하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영어권 국가의 한국학 운영 현황을 조사하고 주요 교과목을 인문, 사회, 한국어교육, 예술, 대중문화 분야로 재분류하였다. 둘째, 국내 한국학과의 운영 현황을 학위과정과 연수과정으로 나누어 비판적 관점으로 분석하였다. 둘째, 국내 한국학과의 운영 현황을 학위과정과 연수과정으로 나누어 비판적 관점으로 분석하였다. 셋째, 한국학이 지역학이자 세계학이 되기 위한 실천방향을 모색하고 이를 교육과정 모형으로 구체화하여 제시하였다. 이 연구는 기존의 한국학 프로그램이 충분히 다루지 못한 문화유산, 대중문화, 예술 작품, 스토리텔링에 관한 지적 자산을 핵심 교육내용으로 포함시키고 지역학이자 세계학으로서의 한국학 연구, 한국어를 민족어이자 세계어로 전치시키는 다중언어 교육을 학제 간 교육과정 모형으로 구안한 의의가 있다.This study proposes curricula for Korean studies, with a focus heavily embedded in storytelling contents from the Korean wave, cultural heritage, traditional arts, and digital media. The curricular of Korean studies in English-speaking university programs, were examined and the major subjects were classified as humanities, Korean language education, the arts, and culture. The courses available in diploma and certificate programs, were also reviewed. The study found that the conventional programs concentrate their efforts on Korean language learning and social science. The results suggest a future direction in which Korean studies could become more globalized and neutral by exploring the meaningfulness of the Korean wave, cultural heritage, the arts, and other humanities for curricula development
