    Review of several clinical factors that affect the occlusal bite forces

    Occlusal bite forces are the most critical consideration factor in treatment planning. Measurement methods of occlusal bite forces were developed in a century, and affected factors are studied in many experiments. Gender, age, shapes of facial morphology, teeth position, periodontal states, etc., are revealed affective aspects of the occlusal bite forces. The dental clinician should make a treatment plan by considering occlusal bite forces and would predict the patient's prognosis. In clinical procedures, several specific factors that include endodontic treatment, implant treatment, and com plete denture prosthesis cause severe results after treatments. If clinicians do not consider these factors before the treatment procedures, extraction of the tooth, implant, and dismission of the complete denture are struggled by patients. These factors (endodontic treatment, Implant, complete denture prosthesis) cause the changes of occlusal bite forces, and then consideration of these changes makes a great result of treatment. The purpose of this study was to summarize the parts that clinicians can refer to based on reviewing studies on complex factors that affect occlusal bite force.ope

    Improving Bone Formation by Guided Bone Regeneration Using a Collagen Membrane with rhBMP-2: A Novel Concept

    We examined whether recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) when applied to collagen membranes, would reinforce them during guided bone regeneration. Four critical cranial bone defects were created and treated in 30 New Zealand white rabbits, including a control group, critical defect only; group 1, collagen membrane only; group 2, biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) only; group 3, collagen membrane + BCP; group 4, collagen membrane with rhBMP-2 (1.0 mg/mL); group 5, collagen membrane with rhBMP-2 (0.5 mg/mL); group 6, collagen membrane with rhBMP-2 (1.0 mg/mL) + BCP; and group 7, collagen membrane with rhBMP-2 (0.5 mg/mL) + BCP. After a 2-, 4-, or 8-week healing period, the animals were sacrificed. The combination of collagen membranes with rhBMP-2 and BCP yielded significantly higher bone formation rates compared to the other groups (control group and groups 1–5 < groups 6 and 7; p < 0.05). A 2-week healing period yielded significantly lower bone formation than that at 4 and 8 weeks (2 < 4 = 8 weeks; p < 0.05). This study proposes a novel GBR concept in which rhBMP-2 is applied to collagen membranes outside instead of inside the grafted area, thereby inducing quantitatively and qualitatively enhanced bone regeneration in critical bone defects. © 2023 by the authors.ope

This digital workflow combines various 3D data in the prosthetic treatment area for diagnosis and prosthetic manufacturing. The planned diagnosis and the fabrication of prosthesis in a virtual patient formed by synthesizing digital data can simulate the results of prosthetic treatment more intuitively than conventional methods, thereby increasing the predictability of aesthetic prosthetic treatment. In this case report, functionally and aesthetically satisfied clinical results were obtained by fabricating a fixed partial dentures through a digital workflow on congenital missing teeth in the maxillary anterior region.ope

    Myiasis with Larvae of Sarcophaga Species in a Diabetic Foot with Gangrene in Korea: A Case Report

    Myiasis is the parasitic infestation of the body of a live animal by fly larvae that grow inside the host while feeding on its tissue. Necrotic tissue is a favorable environment for larvae to thrive, which can be seen easily in patients with a diabetic foot. Myiasis in a diabetic foot is rare but is constantly being reported. The common larvae genera causing myiasis are Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, and Muscidae. This paper reports a rare case of sarcophaga myiasis in a diabetic foot. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first case report in Korea regarding human myiasis with the sarcophaga genus.ope

    Extension Type Locked Metacarpophalangeal Joint of the Little Finger due to Hyperextension Injury

    The extension type locked metacarpophalangeal joint of the little finger is an extremely rare condition characterized by loss of flexion with little or no loss of extension. The most common cause for locking is entrapment of a strap of the ruptured palmar plate. We treated a locked metacarpophalangeal joint of the little finger due to a hyperextension injury. The mechanism of locking was a torn part of the palmar ligament that forcefully rides across the prominence of the radial condyle of the metacarpal bone together with the accessory collateral ligament. These dislocated parts of the ligament formed a constricting bundle that prevented closed reduction. Locking was released successfully by an open reduction using the dorsal approach of the metacarpophalangeal joint without complication.ope

    Association between outdoor temperature and achilles tendon repair: A 14-years nationwide population-based cohort study

    The incidence of achilles tendon rupture varies by gender, age, and seasonal variation. However, there has been no study as yet linking achilles tendon rupture to daily fluctuations in outdoor temperature. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between outdoor temperature and achilles tendon rupture using a Korea Meteorological Administration database and a Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort database. Between 2002 and 2015, all instances of achilles tendon repair were retrieved from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort database to examine sociodemographic factors, specifically sex, age, residential area, and income level. Minimum age requirement was 20 years. Outdoor temperatures recorded at 16 observation points in South Korea were also acquired from the Korea Meteorological Administration data center for analysis. Overall, 850 (0.119%) of 713,456 individuals in the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort database underwent achilles tendon repair between 2002 and 2015. Yearly procedural totals increased with advancing age, peaking at ages 30-39 years (14.6 per 100,000 persons) and declining thereafter. Minimum, median, and maximum outdoor temperatures were associated with achilles tendon repair (p<0.05), as did household income. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, outdoor temperatures, sex, age, and household income emerged as factors significantly associated with achilles tendon repair. Outcomes of this study confirm an association between incidence of achilles tendon repair and outdoor temperature, the latter denoting a novel index and likely surrogate measure of vigorous physical activity afforded by warmer weather.ope

    Sodium Tetradecyl Sulphate Sclerotherapy for Lateral Malleolar Bursitis of the Ankle

    Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical outcomes of sodium tetradecyl sulphate (STS) sclerotherapy for conservative treatment of lateral malleolar bursitis of the ankle. Methods: We reviewed data from 20 consecutive patients (20 ankles) who underwent STS sclerotherapy between August 2018 and June 2019. After aspiration of fluid from the lateral malleolar bursal sac, 2 mL (20 mg) STS was injected into the sac. Clinical outcomes and side effects and complications were evaluated at 2 weeks, 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years after sclerotherapy. Responses to treatment were assessed according to degree of fluctuation, shrinkage of the bursal sac, and soft-tissue swelling. The 36-item short form survey (SF-36) was completed for each patient before and after therapy. Results: Complete response was observed in 17 patients (85%), and partial response was observed in 3 patients (15%) after STS sclerotherapy. SF-36 physical component scores improved from 62.2 (interquartile range, 5.2) before therapy to 70.0 (interquartile range, 7.9) at last follow-up (p < 0.05). One patient (5%) experienced transient hyperpigmentation at the injection site. No major complications occurred. Conclusions: STS sclerotherapy was an effective and safe treatment for patients with lateral malleolar bursitis of the ankle.ope

    Passive Skeletal Muscle Excursion after Tendon Rupture Correlates with Increased Collagen Content in Muscle

    PURPOSE: This study was designed to measure time-dependent changes in muscle excursion and collagen content after tenotomy, and to analyze the correlation between muscle excursion and collagen content in a rabbit model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four rabbits underwent tenotomy of the second extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles on the right legs and were randomly assigned to three groups based on the period of time after tenotomy (2, 4, and 6 weeks). The second EDL muscles on left legs were used as controls. At each time after tenotomy, passive muscle excursion and collagen content, determined by hydroxyproline content, were measured bilaterally, and the ratio of each value to the normal one was used. RESULTS: The mean ratio of muscle excursion after tenotomy to the value of the control decreased in a time-dependent fashion: 92.5% at 2 weeks, 78.6% at 4 weeks, and 55.1% at 6 weeks. The mean ratio of hydroxyproline content in muscle to the value of the control increased in a time-dependent fashion: 119.5% at 2 weeks, 157.3% at 4 weeks, and 166.6% at 6 weeks. There was a significant negative correlation between the ratio of hydroxyproline content in muscle after tenotomy to the control values and the ratio of muscle excursion after tenotomy to the control values (r=-0.602, p=0.002). CONCLUSION: The decrease in muscle excursion seems to correlate with the increase in collagen content in the muscle in a time-dependent fashion following tenotomy.ope

It has been estimated that less than 1% of microorganism in nature can be cultured by standard technique. To crack down the unculturability, metagenome, the collective genomes of environmental microorganisms, was studied as the target of environmental microbiology research. DNA was isolated from ranch manure samples directly and metagenomic library was constructed in E.coli using BAC vectors. To detect clones having activities of amylase, cellulase, protease, lipase, phytase, screening was done with the constructed libraries. One putative amylase gene was obtained from 10,000 recombinant E.coli clones. The clone contained novel amylase gene that showed no homology to the genes deposited in the GenBank. The putative amylase gene was expressed using pET28 and purified for characterization. Since the expressed protein produced inclusion body, the putative amylase was purified under denaturing conditions. After refolding, the protein showed amylase activity in DNS assay. The optimal temperature and pH for the enzyme was 37¡É, pH 7.0 respectively.Maste
