A Metaphor-Theoretical Analysis of Articles on Election in Korean Media Discourse
Election is one of the most important formal decision-making processes by which a population chooses representatives in a democratic society. News articles on election often use figurative expressions in reporting election-related events. This research explores how election is viewed in media discourse and what metaphors are at work in the use of figurative expressions in terms of Metaphor Theory (MT). Examination of reports on election shows that election is viewed as waging wars, playing sports games in most cases, displaying metaphors such as ELECTION IS WAR/WAGING BATTLES and ELECTION IS PLAYING (SPORTS) GAMES, among others. This research also shows that some of the particular processes or aspects of election are mapped on prominent aspects of wars/battles, sports, games in denoting metaphorical meanings. This fact suggests that metaphors are at work for figurative meanings by matching the abstract notions in the target domains and concrete entities in the source domains. In sum, this research argues that MT is a useful tool for understanding and explaining metaphorically extended meanings of the terms of war, battles, sports, games, and so on in representing the competitive nature of election in written media discourse

Since late 1990's, Chinese theoretical world has agonized over how to propagate the ideology and policy of the government, stick to the experimentality of modernism drama, and gain success both in art and commerce. Tian QinXin is considered a successful director that established his own world of works by solving all the above issues.
Tian QinXin is a director that pursues communication of the time. He interacted with the government through the drama that went along the current trends and with the audience with experimental directing techniques. ใThe Field of Life and Deathใ and ใMingใ are considered to be two of the most commercially successful works that conform to the mainstream ideas of the Chinese government and cater to young audience's taste with adequate directing techniques. The purpose of this study lies in identifying mainstream features presented in the two works and looking into experimental directing techniques to see Tian QonXin's dramatizing and directing techniques.
Chapter 2 covers the trend of mainstream play, one of the neo-realism plays, and then deals with mainstream ideas of the works through realistic stories of ใThe Field of Life and Deathใ and ใMingใ to inquire into the works of Tian QinXin that succeeded in communicating with the government.
Chapter 3 probes into the characteristics of experimental directing techniques that succeeded in communicating with audience. Then a study is made for visual images through 'alienation effect' of physical moves used in ใThe Field of Life and Deathใ and for the changes of time and space that cause dramatic conflicts through montage technique.
Chapter 4 deals with the directing techniques of traditional plays that succeeded in communicating with audience. Then a study is made for exchange between the audience and the actors as well as the flexibility of stage through the hypothesis of traditional play used in ใThe Field of Life and Deathใ, for entertainingness of open stage of traditional play through popularization of the play lines of ใMingใ that used Xiangsheng technique, and for the process of exploration to restore open-type stage of traditional play through the directing technique of 'practice room'.
Chapter 5 inquires into the values of Tian QinXin's dramatizing and directing that pursue communication of the time.
In conclusion, Tian QinXin reflected the social changes and audience's demand to his works to seek for diversity and openness. He also intended to establish the concept of traditional play and restore the form of traditional Chinese play through dramatizing and experimental directing technique.๊ตญ๋ฌธ์ด๋ก
