[์˜๋ฌธ] As the average human life span increases due to the progress in science and medical technology, the elderly population is expanding rapidly. As a result, the importance of dementia is being recognized, both in social health and social welfare aspects. Because dementia is a long term degenerative disease and the disruptive behaviors of the dementia patients cause various hardship and discomfort to the family caregivers, the burden of family caregivers can accumulate. If the burden is allowed to accumulate, the family caregivers suffer from the stress of physical fatigue and emotional tension. Social Support mediates the burden, helps family caregivers cope with the stress, and assists family caregivers in providing effective caregiver services. By identifying and analyzing the relationship between the burden of family caregivers and the perceived social support, this report attempts to present theoretical understanding to the development of nursing intervention in solving physical, emotional, and social problems of family caregivers of dementia patients. The subjects of this study were 90 family caregivers of ages twenty(20) and older who are providing care to dementia patients of ages sixty-five(65) and older. The instruments used for this study were Caregiver Burden Inventory developed by Novak and Geust(1989), and Zarit et al(1980) and modified by Seoul University, Regional Medical Service Organization Project Group(1984), and Social Support Scale developed by Park, Jee-Won(1985). Data was collected through interviews with questionnaires from 7 March to 20 April, 1999. The collected data was processed by PC-SAS program and analyzed based on the charateristics of variables, by frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Duncan's multiple comparison test, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and Stepwise Multiple Regression. The result of the study is as follows: 1) In average, dementia patients required a large amount of family caregivers' support for day-to-day activities. 2) The severity of the dementia patients' illness were reported as; mild condition(33.3%), moderate condition(41%) and sever condition (25.6%). 3) The perceived social support of family caregivers was average with a mean score of 2.92(0 to 5 scale). The appraisal support(3.24) was the highest. The average number of perceived support providers was 5.11. 4) Statistically significant family social support caregivers' burdens related to the general characteristics of family caregiver were availability of another caregiver(t=-2.37, p=.0197) and participation in demential patients family group(t=2.19, p=.3080). However, the variable that showed a significant difference with social support level related to the general characteristics of demential patients was treatment method (t=2.52, p=.0136). 5) The mean score of the burden of family caregivers was found to be 2.36 in a 0 to 4 scale and it was relatively high. The time burden(3.23) was reported as the highest burden and the financial burden(1.91) was reported as the lowest. 6) Statistically significant difference was noted between family caregivers' burdens related to the characteristics of family caregivers and religion(t=-2.06, p=.0417), health(F=5.51, p=.0056), relationship with the dementia patient(F=3.98, p=.0222), availability of other caregivers(t=-2.25, p=.0269), prospect of the patient(t=3.98, .0222), and duration of caregiving(t=-2.25, p=.0269). Statistically significant difference was noted between family caregivers' burdens related to the characteristics of dementia patients and age of patient(t=2.87, p=0051), severity of patient(F=6.56, p=.0022) and physical activity level of patient(F=5.59, p=,0052). 7) The correlation between the family caregivers' burden and perceived social support showed statistically significant negative relationship(r=-.35, p=.0010). The total social support level showed significant but low negative correationship with developmental burden (r=-.28, p=.0104), physical burden(r=-.38, p=.0118), social burden(r=-.38, p=.0003), and financial burden(r=-.23, p=.0380). 8) Based on the Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis, the variables related to the family caregivers' burden were social support(12%), daughter in relationship with patient(7.1%), health of caregiver(7%), severity of patient(6.8%), religion of caregiver(4%), and son in relationship with patient(3%). The total of these variables explained 40% of the family caregivers' burden. The results of this study showed a significant negative correlationship between family caregivers' perceived social support and the level of burden. Therefore, since the family caregivers' burden decreases as the perceived social support increases, there is a need for nursing strategy which promotes increased social support.
