[영문] There are still many unresolved problems in the treatment of injured flexor tendons of the hand and thus with frequent impediment of function. In the past, tendon surgery was based upon the concept that tendons lack intrinsic potential for healing. However the primary goal of treatment of flexor tendon injury is the restoration of gliding surface, applicability of the past concept was greatly questioned. Recently there have been many reports insisting on the presence of intrinsic tendon healing capability in the ideal setting. In this study, 28 flexor tendons of the 3rd toe in fourteen white Leghorn chickens, weighing 2.0 to 2.5 kg were resected, and the resected tendon segments, measuring 8 mm in length were then transversly cut to half of it's width, and was resutured and then was inserted to the synovial pouch lateral to the femur condyle of the same chicken. The overlying fibrous tissue and skin were sutured. Change of the sutured tendon grafts were examined with one week interval from 1 week to 7 week post-operatively. The knee joints were opened and gross and microscopic observations were made after staining tilth H-E and Masson's trichrome. We obtained the following results. 1. Among 24 transplanted flexor tendons into synovial pouch, all tendons except two showed no adhesion up to 6 weeks after transplantation. 2. Newly proliferated fibroblasts and new collagen covered the surface of the suture gap. But there was no cellular proliferation in the central area of the suture gap. 3. The free tendon grafts were nourished by diffusional pathways from the synovial fluid, without influence of cells and vessels from surrounding tissues. [영문] Adequate vascularization is pivotally essential for a successful nerve graft. It has been recently confirmed that after conventional nonvascularized nerve graft, the grafts survive by revascularization from the surrounding tissue. Therefore, when a relatively long or thick nerve graft is necessary or when the recipient bed is poorly vascularized, vascularized nerve graft is indicated. Theoretically, the immediate vascularization will inhibit fibroblast infiltration and stimulate nerve cell regeneration. In this study, a new animal model was developed using the sciatic nerve of New Zealand white rabbits. Conventional nonvascularized as well as vascularized nerve graft were done. To determine if vascularized nerve grafts are superior, histomorphological study was performed. A 4 cm segment of the sciatic nerve was obtained and placed as a nonvascularized graft on one side, and as a vascularized graft connected to the inferior gluteal vessels on the opposite side. To determine difference in nerve regeneration between the two groups, the distribution of myelinated nerve fibers and Schwann cell were evaluated after toluidine blue staining 2, 3 and 4 months after nerve grafting. The following results were obtained: 1. Two and three months after grafting, myelinated nerve fibers were more abundant in the vascularized proximal, middle, and distal areas in all nerve fibers of varying diameters. 2. In the post-nonvascularized graft 2 month group, a few myelinated nerve fibers were present in the proximal and middle areas, but none distally. In the Post-vascularized graft 2 month group, myelinated nerve fibers ranging 2∼8γŽ› in diameter were abundant in the proximal, middle and distal areas. 3. In the Post-nonvascularized graft 3 month group, a few myelinated nerve fibers ranging in 2∼6γŽ› were present in all three areas, but in the post-vascularized graft 3 month group, many myelinated nerve fibers ranging in 2∼10γŽ› were present in all three areas. 4. In the post-graft 4 month group, more myelinated nerve fibers were present in all three are-as of the vascularized grafts. However, nerve fibers of less than 2γŽ› in diameter were more abundant in the nonvascularized grafts. 5. Schwann cells were more abundant in the proximal, middle, and distal areas of the post-vascularized 2, 3 and 4 month grafts. Based on the findings obtained from this study, it can be concluded that the immediate restoration of circulation in vascularazed nerve grafts allows for the increased number of surviving Schwann cells, rapid healing of the axon and myelin sheath changes which occur during Wallerian degeneration, and thus is able to stimulate a morphologically optimal regeneration. However, a modified animal model with a prolonged investigative period is most likely warranted to clarify correlation between morphological and functional regeneration of the vascularized nerve graft.restrictio

This paper is to consider the educational and social background of Philippine English in order to cope with the opinion that English must be new official language in Korea. This insistence is almost based on economic reason. Some people take up the position that there is unlimited struggle in the age of globalization and we should speak English as a official language because English is a world language. The Philippines government says the Philippines is the third largest English-speaking country in the world. Even though English is not their native language, many Filipinos can speak English fluently. In addition to the fact that English is the most important subject in schooling, it depends on her social background that many Filipinos still have the colonial mentality until now because the Philippines has not gotten out of the colonial domination completely. Language is not a single instrument of communication but the accumulation of culture and nationality. English is the basic cause that many Filipinos are in utter confusion in the aspect of national identity. We can receive the implications through the Philippines that English is not the driving force of international competitiveness. The Philippines has so many English-speaking people, what is more, she has abundant natural resources and many wonderful tourist attractions. But she is a very poor country and it is difficult to say how her future will turn out. We are currently emphasizing English, then again we are more and more ignoring our Mother tongue. This paper suggests that we should reexamine a subject of national identity in connection with our English language teaching
