Carbon monoxide in an extremely metal-poor galaxy
Extremely metal-poor galaxies with metallicity below 10% of the solar value
in the local universe are the best analogues to investigating the interstellar
medium at a quasi-primitive environment in the early universe. In spite of the
ongoing formation of stars in these galaxies, the presence of molecular gas
(which is known to provide the material reservoir for star formation in
galaxies, such as our Milky Way) remains unclear. Here, we report the detection
of carbon monoxide (CO), the primary tracer of molecular gas, in a galaxy with
7% solar metallicity, with additional detections in two galaxies at higher
metallicities. Such detections offer direct evidence for the existence of
molecular gas in these galaxies that contain few metals. Using archived
infrared data, it is shown that the molecular gas mass per CO luminosity at
extremely low metallicity is approximately one-thousand times the Milky Way

Heat Shock Protein 70 Protects the Heart from Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury through Inhibition of p38 MAPK Signaling.
BackgroundHeat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) has been shown to exert cardioprotection. Intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) overload induced by p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) activation contributes to cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, whether Hsp70 interacts with p38 MAPK signaling is unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the regulation of p38 MAPK by Hsp70 in I/R-induced cardiac injury.MethodsNeonatal rat cardiomyocytes were subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation for 6 h followed by 2 h reoxygenation (OGD/R), and rats underwent left anterior artery ligation for 30 min followed by 30 min of reperfusion. The p38 MAPK inhibitor (SB203580), Hsp70 inhibitor (Quercetin), and Hsp70 short hairpin RNA (shRNA) were used prior to OGD/R or I/R. Cell viability, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, serum cardiac troponin I (cTnI), [Ca2+]i levels, cell apoptosis, myocardial infarct size, mRNA level of IL-1β and IL-6, and protein expression of Hsp70, phosphorylated p38 MAPK (p-p38 MAPK), sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase2 (SERCA2), phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription3 (p-STAT3), and cleaved caspase3 were assessed.ResultsPretreatment with a p38 MAPK inhibitor, SB203580, significantly attenuated OGD/R-induced cell injury or I/R-induced myocardial injury, as evidenced by improved cell viability and lower LDH release, resulted in lower serum cTnI and myocardial infarct size, alleviation of [Ca2+]i overload and cell apoptosis, inhibition of IL-1β and IL-6, and modulation of protein expressions of p-p38 MAPK, SERCA2, p-STAT3, and cleaved-caspase3. Knockdown of Hsp70 by shRNA exacerbated OGD/R-induced cell injury, which was effectively abolished by SB203580. Moreover, inhibition of Hsp70 by quercetin enhanced I/R-induced myocardial injury, while SB203580 pretreatment reversed the harmful effects caused by quercetin.ConclusionsInhibition of Hsp70 aggravates [Ca2+]i overload, inflammation, and apoptosis through regulating p38 MAPK signaling during cardiac I/R injury, which may help provide novel insight into cardioprotective strategies
An intrinsic link between long-term UV/optical variations and X-ray loudness in quasars
Observations have shown that UV/optical variation amplitude of quasars depend
on several physi- cal parameters including luminosity, Eddington ratio, and
likely also black hole mass. Identifying new factors which correlate with the
variation is essential to probe the underlying physical processes. Combining
~ten years long quasar light curves from SDSS stripe 82 and X-ray data from
Stripe 82X, we build a sample of X-ray detected quasars to investigate the
relation between UV/optical variation amplitude () and X-ray
loudness. We find that quasars with more intense X-ray radiation (com- pared to
bolometric luminosity) are more variable in UV/optical. Such correlation
remains highly significant after excluding the effect of other parameters
including luminosity, black hole mass, Ed- dington ratio, redshift, rest-frame
wavelength (i.e., through partial correlation analyses). We further find the
intrinsic link between X-ray loudness and UV/optical variation is gradually
more prominent on longer timescales (up to 10 years in the observed frame), but
tends to disappear at timescales < 100 days. This suggests a slow and long-term
underlying physical process. The X-ray reprocessing paradigm, in which
UV/optical variation is produced by a variable central X-ray emission
illuminating the accretion disk, is thus disfavored. The discovery points to an
interesting scheme that both the X-ray corona heating and UV/optical variation
is quasars are closely associated with magnetic disc turbulence, and the
innermost disc turbulence (where corona heating occurs) correlates with the
slow turbulence at larger radii (where UV/optical emission is produced).Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted by Ap
Renormalization of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Quark Mixing Matrix
We have investigated the present renormalization prescriptions of
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. When considering the prescription which
is formulated with reference to the case of zero mixing we find it doesn't
satisfy the unitary condition of the bare CKM matrix. After added a delicate
patch this problem can be solved at one-loop level. In this paper We generalize
this prescription to all loop levels and keep the unitarity of the bare CKM
matrix, simultaneously make the amplitude of an arbitrary physical process
involving quark mixing convergent and gauge independent. We also find that in
order to keep the CKM counterterms gauge independent the unitarity of the bare

High visibility on-chip quantum interference of single surface plasmons
Quantum photonic integrated circuits (QPICs) based on dielectric waveguides
have been widely used in linear optical quantum computation. Recently, surface
plasmons have been introduced to this application because they can confine and
manipulate light beyond the diffraction limit. In this study, the on-chip
quantum interference of two single surface plasmons was achieved using
dielectric-loaded surface-plasmon-polariton waveguides. The high visibility
(greater than 90%) proves the bosonic nature of single plasmons and emphasizes
the feasibility of achieving basic quantum logic gates for linear optical
quantum computation. The effect of intrinsic losses in plasmonic waveguides
with regard to quantum information processing is also discussed. Although the
influence of this effect was negligible in the current experiment, our studies
reveal that such losses can dramatically reduce quantum interference visibility
in certain cases; thus, quantum coherence must be carefully considered when

Upgrade of Beam Energy Measurement System at BEPC-II
The beam energy measurement system is of great importance and profit for both
BEPC-II accelerator and BES-III detector. The system is based on measuring the
energies of Compton back-scattered photons. Many advanced techniques and
precise instruments are employed to realize the highly accurate measurement of
positron/electron beam energy. During five year's running period, in order to
meet the requirement of data taking and improve the capacity of measurement
itself, the upgradation of system is continued, which involve the component
reformation of laser and optics subsystem, replacement of view-port of the
laser to vacuum insertion subsystem, the purchase of electric cooling system
for high purity germanium detector, and the improvement of data acquisition and
processing subsystem. The upgrading of system guarantees the smooth and
efficient measuring of beam energy at BEPC-II and accommodates the accurate
