バイリンガルとして育つということ : 二言語で生きることで起きる認知的影響

バイリンガルのメタ言語知識や言語的気づきが高いことは長い間知られてきた。近年、バイリンガル研究における関心は二言語での経験が及ぼす非言語的な認知的能力にシフトしている。二言語の語彙体系や言語使用の経験がバイリンガル特有の認知的特性を形成する要因だとされている。よって、本稿では、バイリンガルの語彙についての先行研究を概観したうえで、子どものバイリンガルの非言語的な認知的能力についての最新の知見を検討する。It has been reported that bilinguals have higher levels of meta-linguistic knowledge and linguistic awareness. In recent years, the focus has shifted more towards the influence of experience with two languages on the non-linguistic cognitive domains. Cognitive characteristics specific to bilinguals are considered attributable to their dual lexicons and language access. Thus, this paper provides a brief overview of studies regarding the dual lexicons of bilinguals, and reviews and discusses the latest findings of non-linguistic cognitive abilities in bilinguals, focusing on bilingual children

英語を話すことはかっこいいのか？：日本の幼児の国々に関する知識と外国語に対する態度

本稿では幼児期の日本の子どもを対象に外国や日本といった国や外国語である英語についての知識と英語に対する態度を調べその発達的な変化と関係を検討した。 その結果、国や英語に関する知識は全般的に4 歳から6 歳の間に伸びることが判明した。英語に対する態度については、4 歳児群から5 歳児群の間で差がなく、この時期の子どもは英語を話すことを全般的にポジティブに評価しており、すでにこの時点で社会における英語に対する価値観が影響している可能性が示唆された。日本や外国についての知識と英語に対する態度との関係をみたところ、5 歳群ではよりそのような知識が高い子どものほうが英語を話すことがかっこいいかを判断できないと答えることが判明した。 つまり、 国や人々の理解が高まることによって5, 6 歳以降から一部の子どもの偏った態度は弱まることが示唆された。The present study investigates Japanese preschoolers’ knowledge of Japan and　foreign countries and English and their attitudes towards English and their relationships. The findings suggest that the knowledge about countries and the foreign language increase from four to six of age. There was no difference in attitudes towards the foreign language: children at these ages had positive attitudes towards the ability to speak the English language, suggesting the existence of the influence from the value the society places on the English language on children’s　attitudes at this early stage of childhood. When compared with their knowledge of countries, some children from the five-year-old group showed inability to judge whether it is cool to speak the English language. This suggests the biased attitude towards the English language weakens around the age of five and six onwards as they become　more knowledgeable about other countries and people
