PhysarumSpreader: a new bio-Inspired methodology for identifying influential spreaders in complex networks

Identifying influential spreaders in networks, which contributes to optimizing the use of available resources and efficient spreading of information, is of great theoretical significance and practical value. A random-walk-based algorithm LeaderRank has been shown as an effective and efficient method in recognizing leaders in social network, which even outperforms the well-known PageRank method. As LeaderRank is initially developed for binary directed networks, further extensions should be studied in weighted networks. In this paper, a generalized algorithm PhysarumSpreader is proposed by combining LeaderRank with a positive feedback mechanism inspired from an amoeboid organism called Physarum Polycephalum. By taking edge weights into consideration and adding the positive feedback mechanism, PhysarumSpreader is applicable in both directed and undirected networks with weights. By taking two real networks for examples, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparing with other standard centrality measures

Which metal represents the greatest risk to freshwater ecosystem in Bohai Region of China?

Metals discharged from industrial effluents, agricultural wastewater, and sewage runoff by rapid urbanization are of concern as contaminants of freshwater ecosystem because of their persistence and high toxicity to aquatic organisms. This study attempted to identify which metal posed the greatest risk to freshwater ecosystem in the Bohai Region, China. The metals arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), mercury (Hg), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) were compared against norfloxacin and gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (lindane). By comparing the median reported environmental and ecotoxicity concentrations, it showed that Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cr were the top five metals of concern. Of these, Cu was deemed to represent the highest risk and Hg the lowest risk. The risks for all metals were higher than those for norfloxacin and lindane. Almost all the metals except Hg had water concentrations that exceeded levels where ecotoxicity effects had been recorded in the literature. A comparison with the measurements across the UK rivers suggested that all metals examined had water concentrations about 5- to 10- fold higher than the UK median values except for Cu, Fe, Cd, and Pb. The Fuyang River, a tributary of the Haihe River Basin, seemed to be the location with the highest metal concentrations. However, comparing the post- 2010 period to 2000–2009, concentrations of all the metals had fallen except for Fe and Mn, so risks have decreased over the last 7 yr with the greatest improvements for Cd and Pb. While metals still pose high risks to freshwater ecosystem in this region, there is encouragement that some control measures are taken into effect

Notching early repolarization pattern in inferior leads increases risk of ventricular tachyarrhythmias in patients with acute myocardial infarction: a meta-analysis.

The aim of this of this meta-analysis was to examine the potential association between certain early repolarization (ER) characteristics and ventricular tachyarrhythmias (VTAs) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We searched PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases for records published until December 2014. Of the 658 initially identified records, 7 studies with a total of 1,565 patients (299 with ER and 1,266 without ER) were finally analyzed. Overall, patients with ER displayed a higher risk of VTAs following AMI compared to patients without ER [odds ratio (OR): 3.75, 95% CI: 2.62-5.37, p \u3c 0.00001]. Subgroup analyses showed that the diagnosis of ER prior to AMI onset is a better predictor of VTAs (OR: 5.70, p \u3c 0.00001) compared to those diagnosed after AMI onset (OR: 2.60, p = 0.00001). Remarkably, a notching morphology was a significant predictor of VTAs compared to slurring morphology (OR: 3.85, p = 0.002). Finally, an inferior ER location (OR: 8.85, p \u3c 0.00001) was significantly associated with increased risk of VTAs in AMI patients. In conclusion, our meta-analysis suggests that ER pattern is associated with greater risk of VTAs in patients with AMI. A notched ER pattern located in inferior leads confers the highest risk for VTAs in AMI

The emission positions of kHz QPOs and Kerr spacetime influence

Based the Alfven wave oscillation model (AWOM) and relativistic precession model (RPM) for twin kHz QPOs, we estimate the emission positions of most detected kHz QPOs to be at r=18+-3 km (R/15km) except Cir X-1 at r = 30\+-5 km (R/15km). For the proposed Keplerian frequency as an upper limit to kHz QPO, the spin effects in Kerr Spacetime are discussed, which have about a 5% (2%) modification for that of the Schwarzchild case for the spin frequency of 1000 (400) Hz.The application to the four typical QPO sources, Cir X-1, Sco X-1, SAX J1808.4-3658 and XTE 1807-294, is mentioned.Comment: Science China, Physics, Mechanics & Astronomy, 2010, 53, NO.

A Chinese cave links climate change, social impacts, and human adaptation over the last 500 years.

The collapse of some pre-historical and historical cultures, including Chinese dynasties were presumably linked to widespread droughts, on the basis of synchronicities of societal crises and proxy-based climate events. Here, we present a comparison of ancient inscriptions in Dayu Cave from Qinling Mountains, central China, which described accurate times and detailed impacts of seven drought events during the period of 1520-1920 CE, with high-resolution speleothem records from the same cave. The comparable results provide unique and robust tests on relationships among speleothem δ(18)O changes, drought events, and societal unrest. With direct historical evidences, our results suggest that droughts and even modest events interrupting otherwise wet intervals can cause serious social crises. Modeling results of speleothem δ(18)O series suggest that future precipitation in central China may be below the average of the past 500 years. As Qinling Mountain is the main recharge area of two large water transfer projects and habitats of many endangered species, it is imperative to explore an adaptive strategy for the decline in precipitation and/or drought events. We gratefully acknowledge the NBRPC (2013CB955902), NSFC (41372192; 41290254; 41230524; 41023006), and the WLF-CAS for funding this research.
