    Get PDF
This paper proposes a web based energy cloud platform framework for analyzing energy consumption behavior of campus environment, forecasting future energy demand and controlling some power hungry appliances when electricity demand overpasses generation. In addition to that, one of the key objectives of our work is to incorporate a rule based data filtering logic with this web based energy cloud platform; so that, data associated with energy consumption behavior analysis could be reduced. This work is mainly based on our previously developed ThingsGate platform, which facilitates IoT (Internet of Thing) management on wireless Access Point (AP) and its execution. This paper also provides some insightful discussion on some technical aspects of access networks which should be taken into consideration for ensuring Quality of Service (QoS) of smart grid traffic (e.g. control messages). Our discussion would be useful for successfully deployment of smart grid in a campus environment

Early Wake-Up Decision Algorithm for ONUs in TDM-PONs With Sleep Mode

Recent IEEE and ITU-T standards for TDM-Passive Optical Network (TDM-PON) with sleep mode recommend that the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) in a TDM-PON should be in charge of invoking an Optical Network Units (ONU) to move into sleep state in absence of frames. It is considered that, on upstream frame arrival, a sleeping ONU can leave sleep state, in which an ONU turns off its transmitter or both transmitter and receiver immediately, prior to its assigned sleep interval length. In this paper, we refer to this approach as immediate early wakeup (IMEW). According to the standards, the OLT may or may not allow an ONU to trigger early wake-up function (EWF) on upstream frames arrival. If the OLT does not allow EWF (not support early wake-up (NSEW)), an ONU should stay in sleep state during its assigned sleep duration and buffer all the upstream frames while it is in this state. In IMEW, upstream frames experience small delay but ONU’s energy consumption increases remarkably. Conversely, in NSEW, an ONU consumes less energy compared to IMEW at the price of increasing upstream frame delay and possibility of its buffer overflow. In this paper, the limitations of IMEW and NSEW have motivated us to propose a novel Early Wake-up Decision (EWuD) algorithm which aims at meeting upstream frame delay requirement while reducing ONUs’ energy consumption as much as possible. The role of EWuD algorithm is to select an appropriate time for triggering EWF taking into consideration two factors: (1) buffer overflow probability and (2) delay requirement violation of upstream frames. We evaluate EWuD performances using our TDM-PON OPNET Modular based simulation model under wide range of scenarios. Findings demonstrate that our proposed EWuD can successfully meet delay requirement of all upstream frames while reducing ONU’s energy consumption significantly

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a world-wide network of interconnected physical things using standardized communication protocols. Recent development of Internet Protocol (IP) stacks for resource-constrained devices unveils a possibility for the future IoT based on the stable and scalable IP technology much like today's Internet of computers. One important question remains: how can data and events (denoted as services) introduced by a variety of IP networked things be exchanged and aggregated e ciently in various application domains. Because the true value of IoT lies in the interaction of several services from physical things, answers to this question are essential to support a rapid creation of new IoT smart and ubiquitous applications. The problem is known as service composition. This article explains the practicability of the future full-IP IoT with realtime Web protocols to formally state the problem of service composition for IP smart objects, provides literature review, and discusses its research challenges

This paper highlights the importance of accommodating Fog computation capability in a Passive Optical Network (PON). Fog computation is referred to as a decentralized computing infrastructure at the network access segment so as to facilitate computation capability closer to end users. PON is seen to be one of the key players in expansion of communication network. PON has paved the way in realizing high speed broadband Internet access to the end users. This paper presents an architectures, namely Fog Co-located Optical Line Terminal (FC-OLT). The FC-OLT architecture is the first effort towards presenting an integrated architecture of Fog computation facilities and PON. This architecture is presented considering Time Division Multiplexing (TDM)-PON (TDM-PON) topology. Along with explaining importance of this architecture in improving QoS/QoE parameters, we point out several important research issues in order to provide direction for future research. Initial performance measurement of FC-OLT presented in this paper reveals that FC-OLT architecture can contribute a great deal of in improving traffic performance

    Get PDF
In this paper, we propose an autonomic trust management framework for cloud based and highly dynamic Internet of Things (IoT) applications and services. IoT is creating a world where physical objects are seamlessly integrated in order to provide advanced and intelligent services for human beings in their day-to-day life style. Therefore, trust on IoT devices plays an important role in IoT based services and applications. Cloud computing has been changing the way how provides are looking into these issues. Many studies have proposed different techniques to address trust management although non of them addresses autonomic trust management in cloud based highly dynamic IoT systems. To our understanding, IoT cloud ecosystems help to solve many of these issues while enhancing robustness and scalability. On this basis, we came up with an autonomic trust management framework based on MAPE-K feedback control loop to evaluate the level of trust. Finally, we presents the results that verify the effectiveness of this framework

In this paper, we propose a web-based content syndication system in which users can easily choose IPTV contents. This system generates personalized content guide to provide a list of IPTV contents with respect to user’s interests and statistics information of their online social community. For this, IPTV contents and relevant metadata are collected from various sources and transformed. Then the service and content metadata are processed by user metadata including audience measurement and community metadata. The metadata flows are separated from content flows of transport network. The implementation of IPTV content syndication system demonstrates how to arrange IPTV contents efficiently from content providers to the end user’s screen. We also show that the user metadata including online community information are important for the system’s performance and the user’s satisfaction

Reality Mining with Mobile Data: Understanding the Impact of Network Structure on Propagation Dynamics

    Get PDF
Recent studies have increasingly turned to graph theory to model Realistic Contact Networks (RCNs) for characterizing propagation dynamics. Several of these studies have demonstrated that RCNs are best described as having exponential degree distributions. In this article, based on the mobile data gathered from in-vehicle wireless devices, we show that RCNs do not always have exponential degree distributions, especially in dynamic environments. On this basis, a model is designed to recognize the structure of networks. Based on the model, we investigate the impacts of network structure on disease dynamics that is an important empirical study to the propagation dynamics. The time varying infected number R is the important parameter that is used to quantify the disease dynamics. In this study, the prediction accuracy for R is improved by utilizing realistic structural knowledge mined by our recognition model

Enhancing Quality of Service (QoS) in mobile networks is the key aim for mobile operators. Mobile networks transport several forms of data traffic for real-time applications (i.e., video monitoring). These applications need to get the advantage of QoS adaptation. Numerous scheduling techniques are utilized at the router to assure the QoS of the mobile networks. Upcoming 5G mobile networks will be launched; hence, Human-Type-Communication (HTC) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) data traffic are expected to increase dramatically over mobile networks, which results in growing the capacity and raising high data rates. These networks are expected to face challenges in cases of Radio Access Network (RAN) overload and congestion due to the massive smart devices data traffic with various QoS requirements. This paper presents a comparison for data traffic scheduling techniques, which are Priority Queuing (PQ), First-In-First-Out (FIFO) and Weighted Fair Queuing (WFQ). We consider to select a suitable data traffic scheduling technique in terms of QoS provisioning and helping 5G network, also we propose models and algorithms for efficiently utilized the smallest unit of a RAN in a relay node by aggregating and slicing the data traffic of several M2M devices
