A weather forecast model accuracy analysis and ECMWF enhancement proposal by neural network
This paper presents a neural network approach for weather forecast improvement. Predicted parameters, such as air temperature or precipitation, play a crucial role not only in the transportation sector but they also influence people's everyday activities. Numerical weather models require real measured data for the correct forecast run. This data is obtained from automatic weather stations by intelligent sensors. Sensor data collection and its processing is a necessity for finding the optimal weather conditions estimation. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model serves as the main base for medium-range predictions among the European countries. This model is capable of providing forecast up to 10 days with horizontal resolution of 9 km. Although ECMWF is currently the global weather system with the highest horizontal resolution, this resolution is still two times worse than the one offered by limited area (regional) numeric models (e.g., ALADIN that is used in many European and north African countries). They use global forecasting model and sensor-based weather monitoring network as the input parameters (global atmospheric situation at regional model geographic boundaries, description of atmospheric condition in numerical form), and because the analysed area is much smaller (typically one country), computing power allows them to use even higher resolution for key meteorological parameters prediction. However, the forecast data obtained from regional models are available only for a specific country, and end-users cannot find them all in one place. Furthermore, not all members provide open access to these data. Since the ECMWF model is commercial, several web services offer it free of charge. Additionally, because this model delivers forecast prediction for the whole of Europe (and for the whole world, too), this attitude is more user-friendly and attractive for potential customers. Therefore, the proposed novel hybrid method based on machine learning is capable of increasing ECMWF forecast outputs accuracy to the same level as limited area models provide, and it can deliver a more accurate forecast in real-time.Web of Science1923art. no. 514
Perimeter system based on a combination of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the Bragg gratings
Fiber optic interferometers and Bragg gratings belong to the group of very precise and sensitive devicesthat allow measuring very small deformation, temperature or vibration changes. The described methodology presentsthe useof a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and Bragg gratings together as a sensor system for detecting and monitoring movement within thedefined perimeter of 2.5×1m. Analyses of the dynamic changes in interferometric patterns were a basis for this method. Also the signal maximum amplitude was measured and compared with the noise background. Perimeter disruptions can be detected by Bragg gratings due to its large deformation sensitivity in transversal or perpendicular directions. The result is then evaluated in the spectral domain. In terms of detected persons it showed very good results. The combination of these sensors was chosen for monitoring both the static and dynamic phenomena. Author's aim is to take advantage of both devices' positive properties. Thus, the system has the abilityto identify people due to frequency analysis in case of interferometers as well as dynamic weighting thanks to Bragg gratings
Fiber-optic Bragg system for the dynamic weighing of municipal waste: A pilot study
The publication focus on a pilot study (design, implementation and verification) of a dynamic weighing system designed for weighing of municipal waste during the dumping of garbage containers. The presented solution is based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) and can be additionally implemented into the lifting equipment of commonly employed garbage trucks. The weighing principle is based on the measurement of deformation effect and vibration response of the lifting equipment during the dumping of garbage bins. The measuring system leverages the advantages of power measurement, which use the conversion of the spectral shift of modulated light signal during the measurement to the change in optical power of a pair of spectral overlapping Bragg gratings. Two different methods are presented and discussed: the amplitude method, which analyze the maximum amplitude change of the signal and/or the method, which analyze the time period of the dampened oscillation of the lifting device. Due to the small dimensions, the complete system can be installed together with FBG sensors directly onto the lifting device. The pilot tests of the presented system were carried out for over 4 months, showing an accuracy of up to +/- 4.04 kg in the range of 10-100 kg for standardized containers used for municipal waste. The system worked in completely standalone mode and the garbage trucks were not modified in any inconvenient way.Web of Science9990599905
Pressure membrane FBG sensor realized by 3D technology
The publication describes the design, production, and practical verification of an alternative pressure sensor suitable for measuring the pressure of gas, based on a combination of fiber-optic technology and 3D printing methods. The created sensor uses FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) suitably implemented on a movable membrane. The sensor is equipped with a reference FBG to compensate for the effect of ambient temperature on the pressure measurement. The sensor is characterized by its immunity to EM interference, electrical passivity at the measuring point, small size, and resistance to moisture and corrosion. The FBG pressure sensor has a pressure sensitivity of 9.086 pm/mbar in the range from 0 to 9 mbar with a correlation coefficient of 0.9982. The pressure measurement in the specified range shows an average measurement error of 0.049 mbar and a reproducibility parameter of 0.0269 +/- 0.0135 mbar.Web of Science2115art. no. 515
MR fully compatible and safe FBG breathing sensor: A practical solution for respiratory triggering
This publication describes an original simple low-cost MR fully-compatible and safe fiber-optic breathing sensor (FOBS), which can be used for respiratory triggering and for monitoring the development of respiratory rate within the MR environment and can, thus, serve as prevention from the hyperventilation syndrome. The sensor is created by encapsulation of the Bragg grating into conventional nasal oxygen cannulas. The sensor is immune to minor patient movements, thus limiting movement artifacts to a minimum. Thanks to this fact it can be used for the retrospective/prospective respiratory gating. The sensor is immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and can thus be used in any magnetic field (1.5T, 3T, and 7T). The sensor prototype has been tested in both laboratory and real magnetic resonance (3T) environments relative to conventional pneumatic respiration references (PRR). The data measured were statistically evaluated using the objective Bland-Altman method (BAM) and the functionality of the proposed solution was confirmed. Respiratory Triggering functionality was confirmed by the radiologic doctors on the basis of analyzing images using the most used respiratory triggered T2 TSE 3D sequences and by objective method using the Blind/Referenceless Image Spatial Quality Evaluator (BRISQUE).Web of Science712302512301
Fiber-optic tram vehicle detector
This article describes a compact trackside low-cost measuring sensor with basic advantages such as immunity to electromagnetic interference and ability to remotely evaluate information (the tested distance was 3000 m). The proposed sensor is constructed to detect vibration-acoustic responses caused by tram vehicles. The sensor was tested in real tram traffic. Over a period of six months, a total of 1435 tram vehicles were recorded (different types of tram vehicles) with 100 % detection success. The massive expansion of optical cables along the railways provides our system could be directly connected to as well as being remotely monitored and evaluated.Web of Science131-2433
