    Life is short, stay awake: death anxiety and bedtime procrastination

    In the present study, the relation between bedtime procrastination and death anxiety, and also the moderator roles of gender and purpose in life were investigated. Data were collected from 245 participants through an online survey. The results revealed that gender, but not purpose in life, moderated the relation between death anxiety and bedtime procrastination. The effect of death anxiety on bedtime procrastination was significant only for males. Further, this effect was still significant even after controlling circadian energy and self-control. The findings can be explained based on the Terror Management Theory. Bedtime procrastination can be considered risk-taking behavior, and it functions as a world view for males. Moreover, males might have regarded sleep as a waste of time, and therefore, delayed bedtime to increase their nonsleeping lifetime

    Terephthalic acid bis-(thiophen-3-ylmethyl)thioester (TTMT) was synthesized via the reaction of thiophen-3-ylmethanethiol with terephthaloyl dichloride. Nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies were utilized for the characterization of the monomer. This 3-functionalized thiophene monomer was polymerized in the presence of thiophene (Th) and pyrrole (Py) upon constant potential application in acetonitrile/tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAFB). The resulting copolymers were characterized via cyclic voltammetry (CV), FTIR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), four-probe technique conductivity measurement and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Spectroelectrochemical analysis of P(TTMT-co-Th) revealed π to π* transition at 476 nm with a band gap of 2.0 eV whereas, λmax and Eg were found as 375 nm and 2.4 eV for P(TTMT-co-Py), respectively. Dual type electrochromic devices (ECDs) of P(TTMT-co-Th) and P(TTMT-co-Py) with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) were constructed. Spectroelectrochemistry, switching ability, open circuit memory and stability of the devices were examined by UV-Vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The device P(TTMT-co-Th)/PEDOT switches between brown and blue upon application of 0.0 V and +2.6 V, respectively with 11% optical contrast and 1.1 s as the switching time. On the other hand, P(TTMT-co-Py)/PEDOT ECD exhibits greenish yellow, grayish red and blue colors with the application of -2.4 V, 0.0 V and +0.8 V, respectively and the contrast between extreme potentials was 17.5% with a switching time of 1.6 s. 1-(4-Fluorophenyl)-2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole (FPTP) was synthesized and polymerized both chemically and electrochemically. Several analytical techniques, such as NMR, FTIR, CV, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), four-probe conductivity measurement, SEM were utilized when applicable. Spectroelectrochemistry experiments reflected a π to π* transition at 398 nm with a band gap energy of 1.94 eV for the polymer. A dual type electrochromic device (ECD) of PFPTP and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was constructed. The device switches between yellowish brown and blue upon application of 0.8 V and +1.1 V, respectively.     Cholesterol and ethanol biosensors based on conducting polypyrrole (PPy), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxypyrrole) (PEDOP) were constructed. Cholesterol oxidase (ChOx, from Pseudomonas fluorescens) and alcohol oxidase (AlcOx, from Pichia pastoris) were physically entrapped during electropolymerization of the monomers (Py, EDOT, EDOP) in phosphate buffer containing sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) as the supporting electrolyte. The amperometric responses of the enzyme electrodes were measured monitoring oxidation current of H2O2 at +0.7 V in the absence of a mediator. Kinetic parameters, such as Km and Imax, operational and storage stabilities, effects of pH and temperature were determined for all entrapment supports. Based on Michaelis-Menten (Km) constants, it can be interpreted that both enzymes immobilized in PEDOT showed the highest affinities towards their substrates. Before testing the alcohol biosensors on alcoholic beverages, effects of interferents (glucose, acetic acid, citric acid, L-ascorbic acid) which might be present in beverages were determined. The alcohol content of the distilled beverages (vodka, dry cin, whisky, rakı) was measured with these biosensors.     Amaç: Geçmişten bu yana uyku ve ölüm halleri birçok kültür tarafından benzer ve ilişkili kavramlar olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Uyku günü sonlandırmamızı sağlarken, uyandığımız her yeni günde ömrümüzden bir gün daha eksilmektedir. Gece uykusu günü sonlandıran aktivite olmakla beraber insanın fiziksel ve psikolojik sağlığı için yeri doldurulamaz bir süreçtir. Öte yandan geçen yüzyıldan bu yana ortalama uyku sürelerinde ve uyunan uykunun kalitesinde anlamlı düşüşler gözlemlenmiştir. Uyku parametrelerindeki bu değişimlerin birçok sosyolojik, psikolojik ve kültürel nedenleri olduğu düşünülmektedir. Son yıllarda çalışılmaya başlanan bu nedenlerden önemli bir tanesi de kişinin özel bir neden olmaksızın uyku saatini erteleme davranışıdır. Erteleme davranışları genel olarak olumsuz aktiviteler ile ilişkilendirilirken, uyku gibi olumlu etkileri ağır basan bir aktivitenin ertelenmesi araştırmacıların dikkatini çekmiştir. Bu araştırmanın temel hipotezi uyku saatini erteleme davranışının altında yatan sebeplerden bir tanesinin uykunun ölümü çağrıştırıyor olması ve bu nedenle uykunun ertelenmeye çalışılan bir aktiviteye dönüştüğüdür. Yöntem: Bu hipotezi test etmek amacıyla 229 katılımcıdan ölüm korkusu, uyku saatini erteleme, hayat amacı, öz-kontrol ve sirkadiyen enerji düzeyi gibi değişkenler 20. Ulusal Psikoloji Kongresi: Biimlerin Kesişme Noktasında Psikoloji 232 ile ilgili veri toplanmıştır. Bulgular: Yapılan biçimleyici analize göre erkek katılımcıların ölüm kaygılarının, uyku saatini erteleme davranışlarını anlamlı olarak etkilemekte olduğu bulunmuştur. Bu etki, öz-kontrol ve sirkadiyen enerji düzeyi gibi değişkenler kontrol edildikten sonra da istatistiksel anlamlılığını korumuştur. Kadın katılımcılar için ise anlamlı bir etki bulunmamıştır. Tartışma: Çalışmanın sonuçlarında gözlemlenen cinsiyet farklarına dair açıklamalar sunulmuş ve çalışmanın kısıtlılıkları ile gelecek çalışmalar için öneriler güncel literatürün ışığında tartışılmıştır

    Being irreplaceable activity in terms of physical and psychological health, night sleep is also the event ending the day. Yet, average sleep length and quality has been significantly decreased since 20th century (Van Cauter, Knutson, Leproult, & Spiegel, 2005). Many sociological, psychological and cultural reasons for this change has been proposed. In this respect, a recent topic of interest is procrastinating bedtime without any mandatory reasons (Kroese, De Ridder, Evers, & Adriaanse, 2014). Since procrastination behaviors are in general associated with aversive activities, procrastination of sleep, which is actually a regenerative and refreshing activity, has been baffling researchers. The present study hypothesized that people try to extend their lifetime by procrastinating sleeping and end of the day. Therefore, higher future time perspective, believing there is enough time left ahead of one's life, would predict lower bedtime procrastination; and this association would be mediated by meaning in life To test the proposed hypotheses, data were collected from 238 participants (160 female, 78 male). They were administered measures of future time perspective, bedtime procrastination, meaning in life, self-regulation and circadian energy levels. The mediation analysis revealed that the association between future time perspective and bedtime procrastination is significantly mediated by meaning in life. However, after controlling for the effects of self-regulation and circadian energy levels, previously significant mediation became insignificant.
