A Literature Review on The Use of Music in Architectural Design Education

In order to improve creative thinking in architectural design education, it is useful to interact with other disciplines such as music. There are many works of this interdisciplinary approach between architecture and music in the literature. These studies focus on new methods of creating forms with music for basic architectural education. The common aim is using music as a creative perspective for designing forms before proceeding to architectural design. Various structural forms designed by students are examined within these studies. It is concluded that designing with music could improve students’ imagination and could be benefit to architectural design education. Furthermore, these approaches could be improved, not only in basic form design, but also to be applied in an entire architectural project from space to façade. Music could be used as an inspiration to be transformed into a product, an interior or an architectural structure, and this could be useful for architectural design studio courses. Therefore, this review aims to underline the benefit of music in architectural education by examining the existing studies in the field, and it is a preliminary research for the further study of a method of designing with music

The relation of high structures with the urban texture: examples of London and Paris

The positioning of high structures creates important effects on the city silhouette; even sometimes it is created by them. This silhouette could be in close relationship with the historical regions as well as developing outside the city. It was observed that tall buildings developed in two different ways in London and Paris. This study aims to examine the urban texture of tall building areas in two cities in terms of architectural and urban design aspects. The historical development of London and Paris, and the role of tall buildings in this process were compared. High buildings in London developed alongside with the historical texture, while in Paris they located in an especially reserved area outside the city. These different situations have developed with the city dwellers’ lifestyles, as well as created spatially different effects on them. In this context, the relationship of tall buildings with urban fabric is examined, and an example of a high building selected from each city is discussed. These examples are The Leadenhall from London and Tour First from Paris. It was concluded that the locations of the high buildings have an important role in the urban texture, and it also depends on politics to make decisions.Publisher's Versio

A literature review on the use of biomimicry and form relation in architectural design education

Tasarım eğitiminde form oluşturma süreci, pek çok farklı alanın esin kaynağı olarak kullanılabildiği bir süreçtir. Bu alanlardan biri olan biyomimikri, doğa ile tasarımı bir araya getirmektedir. Doğadan esinlenilerek tasarlanan çalışmaların bazılarında doğal formların birebir kopyalanarak sonuç ürüne aktarıldığı görülmüştür. Bu yaklaşımla ortaya çıkan ürünler ise doğanın birer taklidi olmaktadır. Tasarım sürecinde doğal formlardan doğayı taklit etmeden de esinlenmek mümkün olabilir. Bununla birlikte, doğadan esinlenerek tasarlamak, tasarım eğitiminde kullanılan yaratıcı yaklaşımlardan biridir. Doğadaki formların soyutlanarak tasarıma aktarılması eğitimde faydalı bir pratik olmaktadır. Bu bağlamda çalışmada, doğadaki formlardan esinlenen tasarım anlayışının sonuç ürününe yansıması konusu örnekler üzerinden araştırılmış ve tasarım eğitimindeki yansımaları incelenmiştir. Nitel olarak ele alınan araştırma için veriler, veri tabanı tarama yöntemi ile toplanmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, biyomimetrik tasarım anlayışında, doğadaki formlardan esinlenilerek yeni ve özgün formlar oluşturulabildiği ve bu yaklaşımının tasarım eğitimine fayda sağladığı tespit edilmiştir.Design is inspired by many different areas in the form creation process. Biomimicry,one of these areas, combines nature and design. In some nature-inspired works, itwas seen natural forms were copied and directly transferred to the final design. Theproducts that emerge with this approach are imitations of nature. Besides, theconcept of design inspired by nature is one of the creative approaches used in designeducation. Designing by abstracting forms in nature is a beneficial practice ineducation. In this context, designs inspired by nature were investigated throughexamples, and the reflections of the approach in architectural design education wereexamined. The research is qualitative, and the data were collected by databasescanning method. As a result of the study, it was determined that the biomimicryapproach benefited by improving the limits of architectural design education anddeveloped a realistic and creative perspective in students.Publisher's Versio

The projection of relation between design and music in space

Müzik sanatı ilk çağlardan itibaren insan hayatında önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. İnsan müziği belirli bir süre içinde algılar, dolayısıyla müzik zamansal bir sanattır. Bununla birlikte, sesin duyulabilmesi için iletici ortama ihtiyaç olduğundan, mekânsaldır da denebilir. Müzik, zamansal ve mekânsal olmasının yanında, biçimsel olarak da ele alınmaktadır. Deneysel çalışmalarda, müziğin görülebilir formlar oluşturduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Müziğin biçimselliği ise tasarım ve müzik ilişkisini ortaya çıkarmaktadır. Bu bağlamda araştırma, müziğin kavramsal olarak ele alınarak tasarım ürüne dönüştürülebileceği hipotezinden yola çıkılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışma, tasarım sürecinde müziğin kavramsal çıkış noktası olarak kullanılarak sonuç ürüne aktarılması ve bunun mekândaki yansımalarını incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma kapsamında, insan ve müzik ilişkisi, müziğin mekân, zaman ve uzamdaki yeri ile müziğin mekân içindeki etkisi konuları araştırılmıştır. Bu bağlamda, müziğin biçimsel yönü irdelenerek, tasarıma ve mekâna etkilerinin örneklerle birlikte incelenmesi yöntemi benimsenmiştir. Belirlenen araştırma sorusu dâhilinde müziğin tasarımda form oluşturma sürecinde bir kavram olarak kullanılabileceği ve yöntemlerin tasarımcıya bağlı olarak çeşitlenebildiği tespit edilmiştir.Music has been an important part of human life from the early ages. One perceives music in a certain period of time, therefore music is a temporal art. It is also spatial, since a transmitting environment is needed for sound to be heard. Besides being temporal and spatial, music is also considered formally. In experimental studies, it has been observed that music has visible forms. The formalism of music reveals the relationship between design and music. In this context, the research was carried out on the basis of the hypothesis that music can be conceptually considered and converted into a design product. The aim of this study is to analyse the reflections of music in the space by using music as a conceptual starting point in the design process. In this study, the relationship between human and music, the place of music in space, time and extension and the effect of music in space were investigated. In this context, the formal aspect of music is examined and the method of examining the effects of design and space together with examples is adopted. Within the determined research question, it was found that music can be used as a concept in the form formation process in design and methods can be varied depending on the designer.Publisher's Versio
