On the Timing of Vertical Relationships

We show that the standard analysis of vertical relationships transposes directly to investment timing. Thus, when a firm undertaking a project requires an outside supplier (e.g. an equipment manufacturer) to provide it with a discrete input, and if the supplier has market power, investment occurs too late from an industry standpoint. The distortion in firm decisions is characterized by a Lerner index, which is related to the parameters of a stochastic downstream demand. When feasible, vertical restraints restore efficiency. For instance, the upstream firm can induce entry at the correct investment threshold by selling a call option on the input. Otherwise, competition may substitute for vertical restraints. In particular, if two firms are engaged in a preemption race downstream, the upstream firm sells the input to the first investor at a discount that is chosen in such a way that the race to preempt exactly offsets the vertical externality, and this leader invests at the optimal market threshold.

Fano Resonances in Mid-Infrared Spectra of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

This work revisits the physics giving rise to the carbon nanotubes phonon bands in the mid- infrared. Our measurements of doped and undoped samples of single-walled carbon nanotubes in Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy show that the phonon bands exhibit an asymmetric lineshape and that their effective cross-section is enhanced upon doping. We relate these observations to electron-phonon coupling or, more specifically, to a Fano resonance phenomenon. We note that only the dopant-induced intraband continuum couples to the phonon modes and that defects induced in the sidewall increase the resonance probabilities.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures and 1 Supplementary Information File (in pdf

Évaluation d’une action de formation d’enseignants du supérieur recourant à l’analyse de leurs pratiques professionnelles

La formation pédagogique des Enseignants-chercheurs (EC) connaît une refondation en France au cours de ces dernières années. Cet article dresse un constat des raisons qui expliquent ces années sans véritable formation. Puis il montre les difficultés de conception et de mise en œuvre d’actions présentées sur catalogue. L’évaluation d’une action recourant à l’analyse de pratiques révèle que le changement est au cœur des projets d’une majorité. Quatre conclusions sont soumises à discussion : la formation nécessite une négociation préalable avec ses bénéficiaires, l’incitation à la réflexivité ne s’adresse pas à tous les EC, le nouveau public de l’université ne constitue qu’une partie du problème et l’investissement des universités commence à être perceptible.Teacher-researcher training In France has undergone a period of reorganisation in recent years..
