Paediatric patients with cancer and those undergoing haematopoietic cell transplantation are at high risk of bacterial infections. The 8th European Conference on Infections in Leukaemia (ECIL-8) convened a Paediatric Group to review the literature and to formulate recommendations for the use of antibiotics according to the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases grading system. The evaluation of antibacterial prophylaxis included mortality, bloodstream infection, febrile neutropenia, emergence of resistance, and adverse effects as endpoints. Initial antibacterial therapy and antibiotic de-escalation or discontinuation focused on patients with a clinically stable condition and without previous infection or colonisation by resistant bacteria, and on patients with a clinically unstable condition or with previous infection or colonisation by resistant bacteria. The final considerations and recommendations of the ECIL-8 Paediatric Group on antibacterial prophylaxis, initial therapy, and de-escalation strategies are summarised in this Policy Review.Peer reviewe

    Trends in Silicon-on-insulator Technology

SOI technology has quickly evolved from the first laser recrystallization experiments of the early eighties to the recent fabrication of 256k SRAMs in thin-film material. Of the many different SOI materials which have been investigated, some have found successful applications, while others never really quite made it. For example, laser recrystallization has been used to produce incredible 3D integrated circuits in Japan, but the fabrication yield is close to zero. SIMOX (separation by implantation of oxygen), and BESOI (bonded and etched-back SOI), on the other hand, are quite successful, and are now used for the fabrication of integrated devices with good fabrication yield. This paper will quickly review the "history" of several major SOI materials and their field of application

An Analytical Model for Gaa Transistors

The GAA transistor is a new SOI device with a symmetrical double-gate structure. We have developed an analytical model to describe the volume inversion occurring in this device. The model is used to characterize the mobility of the carriers both at the surface and in the volume of the SOI film

Progress and Challenges in Computational Rheology

Our research work over the last few years serves to illustrate the basic issues associated with the numerical prediction of rheologically-complex flows, with particular emphasis on viscoelastic fluids. Numerical challenges in this field are shown to be tightly coupled to the mathematical nature of the governing equations, as well as to fundamental physical issues such as flow behavior close to walls and singularities

Zn-al Matrix Composites - Investigation of the Thermal-expansion, Creep Resistance and Fracture-toughness

    No full text
Composites of Zn-A1 alloys (ZA8 and ZA27) reinforced by fibres of alumina, carbon or steel have been prepared by squeeze casting. Microstructural observations reveal the segregation of the zinc-rich phase around the fibres. The composites exhibit a greatly reduced creep rate in comparison with the matrix alloys. The thermal expansion coefficient is also significantly decreased. The impact toughness has been studied by Charpy tests
