Surface pre-coating of talc particles by carboxyl methyl cellulose adsorption : study of adsorption and consequences on surface properties and settling rate

This paper investigates the adsorption of different sized carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC) onto talc particles (adsorption isotherm, adsorption reversibility), its consequences on the particles properties (electrophoretic mobility and surface wetting) and its effect on their dispersion (settling coefficient). Throughout the paper, the properties of talc particles dispersed in CMC solution are compared to CMC pre-coated talc particles: talc particles dried in a solution of CMC before their redispersion. The adsorption of CMC onto talc was quantified at around 0.4 mg of CMC per m2 of talc and was seen to be irreversible on washing the talc particles with distilled water. When characterising talc surface properties, it was found that CMC adsorption leads to an increase of the negative surface charge and to an increase of the wettability. The settling velocity of CMC pre-coated talc particles in water can be around 50 % lower than that of the initial talc particles. The pre-coating of talc particles by CMC is then assumed to increase their stabilization : particle aggregation is hindered by adsorbed CMC layer inducing electrosteric repulsion between the talc particles. The technique of talc pre-coating with CMC makes the talc dispersion easier and could open interesting perspectives in engineering processes using talc dispersions

Modelo de caracterização ecológica e turística para propriedades rurais: um estudo de caso

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia de Produção.A velocidade do crescimento de consumo da população não esta acompanhando o período natural de recomposição e fornecimento de matéria prima para se viver harmonicamente, a destruição e falta de preservação ambiental é uma realidade desastrosa. O ser humano deve buscar alternativas de exploração e desenvolvimento em harmonia com os meios naturais, sociais e culturais do nosso planeta com intuito de garantir a existência de tais recursos para as nossas e para as futuras gerações. Uma atividade que vem de encontro com esta forma de desenvolvimento é o turismo rural sustentável, que contribui para a preservação ambiental, a disseminação de alternativas sustentáveis de exploração, a diminuição do êxodo rural e a valorização da agricultura familiar, já que o Brasil possui uma grande área economicamente rural. Para que esta atividade seja desenvolvida de forma sustentável é imprescindível um planejamento turístico que aborde os aspectos ambientais, sociais e culturais da região ou local onde será desenvolvido, evitando assim os impactos negativos de desenvolvimento. O presente estudo de caso caracteriza-se como um estudo exploratório e tem por objetivo geral desenvolver um modelo de caracterização ecológica e turística para o planejamento turístico sustentável. Esta caracterização aborda os aspectos econômicos, sociais, ambientais, culturais e espaciais da localidade e da região onde será aplicado, com o objetivo de contribuir para um desenvolvimento sustentável do local e região. A metodologia adotada incluiu o referencial teórico, a definição do modelo e a aplicação do mesmo na propriedade rural, a Fazenda Deca de Barros, localizada no município de São Manuel estado de São Paulo. The speed of the growing consumption is not flowing the re-composition time that natural resources needs to have harmony. The damages and a lack of environment protections is a dangerous reality. The human been, should look for alternatives of exploration and development in harmony with natural, social and cultural resources of our planet, to give a warranty that those resources will exist to our next generations. One activity with goes on this direction of development is the sustainable countryside tourism, with contributes with the preservation of the environment, with the dissemination of sustainable alternatives for exploration, the reducing of country exodus and the valorization of family agriculture even because Brazil has a great area within a countryside economy. To develop this activity in a sustainable way is necessary a plan with involves the social, cultural and natural aspects in the location where the works will be done, to prevent and reduce the negative impacts of development. The present work is a exploratory study and has as a general objective to develop a model of ecological and tourist characterization to plan and get a sustainable tourism. These characterization gets de economics, socials cultural and environmental aspects of the location and area where will be applied, with the objective to contribute with the sustainable development of the location.
