Fluorinated ethylene propylene /FEP/ film is substituted for epoxy cement in bonding glass covers to silicon solar cells. Insensitivity of FEP to ultraviolet radiation reduces requirement for filtering and does not impair cell performance. Cell costs are reduced and cover mounting is simplified

Approximately Minwise Independence with Twisted Tabulation

A random hash function $h$ is $\varepsilon$-minwise if for any set $S$, $|S|=n$, and element $x\in S$, $\Pr[h(x)=\min h(S)]=(1\pm\varepsilon)/n$. Minwise hash functions with low bias $\varepsilon$ have widespread applications within similarity estimation. Hashing from a universe $[u]$, the twisted tabulation hashing of P\v{a}tra\c{s}cu and Thorup [SODA'13] makes $c=O(1)$ lookups in tables of size $u^{1/c}$. Twisted tabulation was invented to get good concentration for hashing based sampling. Here we show that twisted tabulation yields $\tilde O(1/u^{1/c})$-minwise hashing. In the classic independence paradigm of Wegman and Carter [FOCS'79] $\tilde O(1/u^{1/c})$-minwise hashing requires $\Omega(\log u)$-independence [Indyk SODA'99]. P\v{a}tra\c{s}cu and Thorup [STOC'11] had shown that simple tabulation, using same space and lookups yields $\tilde O(1/n^{1/c})$-minwise independence, which is good for large sets, but useless for small sets. Our analysis uses some of the same methods, but is much cleaner bypassing a complicated induction argument.Comment: To appear in Proceedings of SWAT 201

Reconciling Graphs and Sets of Sets

We explore a generalization of set reconciliation, where the goal is to reconcile sets of sets. Alice and Bob each have a parent set consisting of $s$ child sets, each containing at most $h$ elements from a universe of size $u$. They want to reconcile their sets of sets in a scenario where the total number of differences between all of their child sets (under the minimum difference matching between their child sets) is $d$. We give several algorithms for this problem, and discuss applications to reconciliation problems on graphs, databases, and collections of documents. We specifically focus on graph reconciliation, providing protocols based on set of sets reconciliation for random graphs from $G(n,p)$ and for forests of rooted trees

CHARACTERISTICS OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS UNDERGRADUATE ADVISING IN THE WESTERN REGION

The quality of faculty advising has been a source of concern among students and faculty. As an initial attempt at addressing these concerns this paper summarizes the results of a faculty advising study in undergraduate agricultural economics programs. Various advising program characteristics among western schools are discussed and contrasted to schools in other regions. Interregional and interdepartmental variation was found in advisor resource allocation, advising program implementation, rewards and priorities, and evaluations of advising quality. Despite larger enrollments, smaller advising budgets, less support and lower rewards for advising, schools in the West reported advising quality comparable if not superior to that in other regions.Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession,

The use of FEP Teflon in solar cell cover technology

FEP plastic film was used as a cover and as an adhesive to bond cover glasses to silicon solar cells. Various anti-reflective coatings were applied to cells and subsequently covered with FEP. Short circuit currents were measured before and after application of the coating and of the FEP. FEP was bonded to seven of the nine differently coated cells, with no change in the total short circuit current in four cases
