Thesis (Ph.D.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 1984The northern shrimp, Pandalus borealis Kr^yer, is an important fishery resource in Alaska. However, a drastic decline in the commercial catch since 1978 poses a serious problem for the fishery. This study examined the effects of temperature on reproduction and larval survival of P. borealis. These are factors though to be vital to the determination of year class strength. P. borealis was found to have narrow thermal requirements for egg production with moderate (6°C) to low (3°C) temperatures generally more favorable than high (9°C) temperatures. In contrast with egg production, larval survival was enhanced by higher (6 and 9°C) temperatures. This study provides useful information for management of the fishery by demonstrating that temperature can trigger flucuations in the commercial catch from 5-50% through its effects on rates or reproduction and larval survival, and thereby population size. In warm water areas averaging >6°C, temperature exerts its main influence on reproduction, causing fecundity to vary by as much as 50%. While in colder areas average <3°C, fecundity and larval survival can vary with temperature by as much as 20 and 40%, respectively. Use of the information derived here requires monitoring temperature in the major fishery areas to detect changes in abundance of ovigerous females, egg number and larval mortality. Changes in these parameters are valuable indicators of stock condition when combined with abundance surveys and fishing intensity estimates

In today’s era, up-to-date information can be retrieved from social network, internet community and data forums. People especially the younger generation share their feelings, happiness, experience and also day to day happenings in the social media platforms like Twitter. There exists large volume of unstructured data in it. The proposed system concentrates on the learning process of the engineering students and the problems faced by them during their study from their twitter posts. Since the data collected is huge, Apache hadoop map reduce environment is used for processing. The system includes pre-processing of tweets, calculating F1 measure, identifying prominent categories, identifying word and category probability and finally classifies tweets to the respective categories. The supervised learning techniques such as multiclass SVM based Platt Scaling, Naïve Bayes and logistic regression are used to identify heavy study load, lack of social engagement and sleep problems. Comparing the results attained, SVM achieves an accuracy score of 84% which is 5 to 10 percent higher than Logistic Regression and Naïve Bayesian method

The purpose of this article is to show that wayang kulit is a vehicle for the spread of Islam in the land of Java and to show the Islamic values contained in the story of wayang kulit with the Lakon Babat Alas Wanamarta. The researcher has two problem formulations, why wayang kulit is used as a vehicle for the spread of Islam in Java and what Islamic values are contained in the wayang kulit story with the Lakon Babat Alas Wanamarta. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through documentation and interviews. Documentation is done by viewing video recordings of wayang performances. Interviews were conducted with the puppeteers who often perform wayang performances. The result of this study is that wayang kulit became a medium for spreading Islam by Sunan Kalijaga. Sunan Kalijaga spread Islam through a cultural approach. Wayang kulit was chosen because at that time wayang kulit was something that was popular. So that the spread of Islam through wayang kulit is easily accepted by the community by being associated with the play in each wayang story. In this Lakon, one of them is the Lakon Babat Alas Wanamarta which contains Islamic values, such as ridho, istiqomah, and tawakal

Tree Based Boosting Algorithm to Tackle the Overfitting in Healthcare Data

    Get PDF
Healthcare data refers to information about an individual's or population's health issues, reproductive results, causes of mortality, and quality of life. When people interact with healthcare systems, a variety of health data is collected and used. However, these healthcare data are noisy as well as it prone to over-fitting. Over-fitting is a modeling error in statistics that occurs when a function is too closely aligned to a limited set of data points. As a result, the model learns the information and noise in the training data to the point where it degrades the model's performance on fresh data. The tree-based boosting approach works well on over-fitted data and is well suited for healthcare data. Improved Paloboost performs trimmed gradient and updated learning rate using Out-of-Bag mistakes collected from Out-of-Bag data. Out-of-Bag data are the data that are not present in In-Bag data. Improved Paloboost's outcome will protect against over-fitting in noisy healthcare data and outperform all tree baseline models. The Improved Paloboost is better at avoiding over-fitting of data and is less sensitive, according to experimental results on health-care datasets

Diversity, distribution and seasonal variation of seaweeds in Southwest coast of Peninsular India

Six different research locations around the southwest coasts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala were used for the current investigations on the diversity, distribution, and seasonal fluctuation of seaweeds (India). A total of 73 Chlorophyta, Ochrophyta and Rhodophyta were recorded under 23 families and 38 genera. The study site Rasthakaadu (53) was with the maximum number of seaweeds followed by Kanniyakumari (51). Out of six study sites, four study sites (Rasthakaadu, Kanniyakumari, Muttom, Kurumpanai) were dominant with Rhodophyta in contrast to the other two study sites (Vallavilai, Vizhinjam) in which Chlorophyta was dominant. Chlorophyta such as Chaetomorpha antannina, C. indica, C. media, Ulva fasciata, U. lactuca, brown seaweeds Sargassum ilicifolium and red seaweed Gracilariopsis longissima were commonly seen in the study area. Chaetomorpha indica (Chlorophyceae) was recorded as the most dominant species in season I, whereas Sargassum ilicifolium (Phaeophyaceae) was considered as the most dominant seaweed taxon in seasons II and III. The seasonal variation in physicochemical parameters of seawater had much influence on the growth of seaweeds. Comparing the eastern Coromandel Coast of peninsular India to the western Malabar Coast, it has been found from the current study that the eastern Coromandel Coast was rich in seaweed. Moreover, the study shows that the topography and seasonal change of the physicochemical characteristics of seawater at a given site were the key determinants of seaweed richness. Anthropogenic activities, like Nuclear power plants (Koodankulam), sand mining, construction works, dumping of plastics etc., also affected the potential growth of seaweeds thereby reducing the sustainability of the natural resource

Final Report: National Institute for Health Research Policy Research Programme Project Dementia Friendly Communities: The DEMCOM evaluation (PR-R15-0116- 21003) As the number of people living with dementia is increasing globally, Dementia Friendly Communities (DFCs) offer one way of providing the infrastructure and support that can enable people affected by dementia to live well. There is no universally agreed definition of a DFC, and DFCs need not be geographical entities. This study adopted a broad definition, recognising that becoming a DFC is an ongoing process only fully achieved when living with dementia is normalised into a community’s culture, language, infrastructure and activities. A DFC can involve a wide range of people, organisations and geographical areas. A DFC recognises that a person with dementia is more than their diagnosis and that everyone has a role in supporting their independence and inclusion. DFCs in England can apply for official recognition by Alzheimer’s Society as working towards dementia friendly status. A growing number of national and international frameworks and guidance is available to communities seeking to become dementia friendly. Evaluations of DFCs are largely descriptive. While work exists on identifying core outcomes of DFC initiatives, there are very few studies that have tested DFC effectiveness or compared current practice with known need. Evidence on cost effectiveness, cost benefit, social value and social return on investment (SRoI) of DFCs is also missing. This study addresses key gaps in the evidence
