Potential uses for bracken (Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Kuhn) in organic agrculture

    Get PDF
Bracken is a weed species due to its toxic nature and adverse effects on agriculture and ecology. This poster reviews research into historical uses for fronds and litter harvested as part of organically approved control methods. The use of bracken as an over winter mulch reduced losses of nitrogen and potassium from bare soil and maintained soil temperatures. Bracken litter was found to be a viable biofuel, with a calorific value comparable to wood and low ash and alkali metal contents. The contents of frond ash were investigated, with high concentrations of potassium found giving them a value as organic fertiliser. The addition of frond ash to soil significantly increased clover growth and number of nodules. The addition of frond ash to soil significantly increased the yield of saleable main crop potatoes. These finding have shown that bracken has a value especially within organic agriculture

Five-year financial analysis of two commercial farms converting to organic: 2000-2005

The financial performance including input and output costs were analysed for two commercial Scottish farms converting to organic production. A comparative analysis for a five year period is provided using data from the Scottish Farm Accounts scheme, and demonstrates that both conversions had positive financial outcomes. Both farms applied strategic changes to their businesses

Wakes in stratified flow past a hot or cold two-dimensional body

This paper considers the general problem of laminar, steady, horizontal, Oseen flow at large distances upstream and downstream of a two-dimensional body which is represented as a line source of horizontal or vertical momentum, or as a line heat source or heat dipole. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible, diffusive, viscous and stably stratified. The analysis is focused on the general properties of the horizontal velocity component, as well as on explicit calculation of the horizontal velocity profiles and disturbance stream-function fields for varying degrees of stratification. For stable stratifications, the flow fields for all four types of singularities exhibit the common feature of multiple recirculating rotors of finite thicknesses, which leads to an alternating jet structure both upstream and downstream for the horizontal velocity component and to leewaves downstream in the overall flow. The self-similar formulae for the velocity, temperature and pressure at very large distances upstream and downstream are also derived and compared with the Oseen solutions

Study to define unsteady flow fields and their statistical characteristics

Preliminary estimates of space shuttle fluctuating pressure environments were made based on analyses of wind tunnel data, and empirical prediction techniques. Particular emphasis was given to the external tank and solid rocket boosters for the transonic speed regime during launch of a parallel-burn space shuttle configuration. Predicted environments are presented as space-averaged zonal profiles with progressive shading from zone to zone to illustrate spatial variations in the magnitude of the fluctuating pressure coefficient over the surfaces of the external tank and solid rocket boosters. Predictions are provided for the transonic Mach number range from 0.8 equal to or less than M sub infinity equal to or less than 1.5, and for supersonic Mach numbers of 2.0 and 3.0

Structural and Electronic Properties of the Interface between the High-k oxide LaAlO3 and Si(001)

The structural and electronic properties of the LaAlO3/Si(001) interface are determined using state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations. The atomic structure differs from previous proposals, but is reminiscent of La adsorption structures on silicon. A phase diagram of the interface stability is calculated as a function of oxygen and Al chemical potentials. We find that an electronically saturated interface is obtained only if dopant atoms segregate to the interface. These findings raise serious doubts whether LaAlO3 can be used as an epitaxial gate dielectric.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Probabilistic models of information retrieval based on measuring the divergence from randomness

    Get PDF
We introduce and create a framework for deriving probabilistic models of Information Retrieval. The models are nonparametric models of IR obtained in the language model approach. We derive term-weighting models by measuring the divergence of the actual term distribution from that obtained under a random process. Among the random processes we study the binomial distribution and Bose--Einstein statistics. We define two types of term frequency normalization for tuning term weights in the document--query matching process. The first normalization assumes that documents have the same length and measures the information gain with the observed term once it has been accepted as a good descriptor of the observed document. The second normalization is related to the document length and to other statistics. These two normalization methods are applied to the basic models in succession to obtain weighting formulae. Results show that our framework produces different nonparametric models forming baseline alternatives to the standard tf-idf model
