Partitioning approach for large wind farms: active power control for optimizing power reserve

To this end, wind farm controllers must set the power generation of each turbine to compensate generation and demand imbalances. With the aim of optimizing primary frequency support, this paper proposes a partitioning approach to split large wind farms into several disjoint subsets of turbines according to the wake propagations through the wind farm. The partitioning problem is solved as a mixed-integer multi-objective optimization problem stated to maximize the strength of the coupling among the turbines due to the wake effect. Thus, no additional information sharing related to the wake propagations needs to be considered between the subsets. Different control tasks are assigned to the local controller of each subset, such that the total power generated meets the power demanded by the grid while the power reserve for enhancing primary frequency support is maximized. Active control of laminar-turbulent transition
Instability waves, commonly called T-S waves, can be introduced in a laminar boundary layer by periodic heating of flush-mounted heating elements. Experiments have demonstrated that nearly complete cancellation of a T-S wave excited in this way can be achieved by using a second downstream heating element with a suitable phase shift. As one application of the technique, a single element together with a feedback loop activated by measured wall shear stress has been used to reduce the amplitude of naturally occurring laminar instability waves. A significant increase in the transition Reynolds number has been achieved
Active noise control for high frequencies
There are many applications that can benefit from Active Noise Control (ANC) such as in aircraft cabins and air conditioning ducts, i.e. in situations where technology interferes with human hearing in a harmful way or disrupts communication. Headsets with analogue ANC circuits have been used in the armed forces for attenuating frequencies below 1 kHz, which when combined with passive filtering offers protection across the whole frequency range of human hearing. A dental surgery is also a noisy environment; in which dental drill noise is commonly off-putting for many patients and is believed to harm the dentist’s hearing over a long period of time. However, dealing with dental drill noise is a different proposition from the applications mentioned above as the frequency range of the peak amplitudes goes from approximately 1.5 kHz to 12 kHz, whereas conventional ANC applications consider a maximum of 1.5 kHz. This paper will review the application of ANC at low frequencies and justify an approach for dealing with dental noise using digital technologies at higher frequencies. The limits of current ANC technologies will be highlighted and the means of improving performance for this dental application will be explored. In particular, technicalities of implementing filtering algorithms on a Digital Signal Processor will be addressed
Performance of active multicast congestion control
This paper aims to provide insight into the behavior of congestion control mechanisms for reliable multicast protocols. A multicast congestion control based on active networks has been proposed and simulated using ns-2 over a network topology obtained using the Tiers tool. The congestion control mechanism has been simulated under different network conditions and with different settings of its configuration parameters. The objective is to analyze its performance and the impact of the different configuration parameters on its behavior. The simulation results show that the performance of the protocol is good in terms of delay and bandwidth utilization. The compatibility of the protocol with TCP flows has not been demonstrated, but the simulations performed show that by altering the parameter settings, the proportion of total bandwidth taken up by the two types of flow, multicast and TCP, may be modified.Publicad
Active clearance control system for a turbomachine
An axial compressor is provided with a cooling air manifold surrounding a portion of the shroud, and means for bleeding air from the compressor to the manifold for selectively flowing it in a modulating manner axially along the outer side of the stator/shroud to cool and shrink it during steady state operating conditions so as to obtain minimum shroud/rotor clearance conditions. Provision is also made to selectively divert the flow of cooling air from the manifold during transient periods of operation so as to alter the thermal growth or shrink rate of the stator/shroud and result in adequate clearance with the compressor rotor

The Middeck Active Control Experiment (MACE)
The Middeck Active Control Experiment (MACE) is a NASA In-Step and Control Structure Interaction (CSI) Office funded Shuttle middeck experiment. The objective is to investigate the extent to which closed-loop behavior of flexible spacecraft in zero-gravity (0-g) can be predicted. This prediction becomes particularly difficult when dynamic behavior during ground testing exhibits extensive suspension and direct gravity coupling. On-orbit system identification and control reconfiguration is investigated to improve performance which would otherwise be limited due to errors in prediction. The program is presently in its preliminary design phase with launch expected in the summer of 1994. The MACE test article consists of three attitude control torque wheels, a two axis gimballing payload, inertial sensors and a flexible support structure. With the acquisition of a second payload, this will represent a multiple payload platform with significant structural flexibility. This paper presents on-going work in the areas of modelling and control of the MACE test article in the zero and one-gravity environments. Finite element models, which include suspension and gravity effects, and measurement models, derived from experimental data, are used as the basis for Linear Quadratic Gaussian controller designs. Finite element based controllers are analytically used to study the differences in closed-loop performance as the test article transitions between the 0-g and 1-g environments. Measurement based controllers are experimentally applied to the MACE test article in the 1-g environment and achieve over an order of magnitude improvement in payload pointing accuracy when disturbed by a broadband torque disturbance. The various aspects of the flight portion of the experiment are also discussed
Practical application of active noise control in a duct using predictive control
This paper presents a practical application of Active Noise
Control (ANC) using the Generalised Predictive Control (GPC) algorithm. The main objective of this application was to reduce significantly the noise level in a duct using this technique. It is shown that the experimental results
obtained using GPC are very close from those obtained with the classical LMS algorithm on the same experimental set-up. On the other side, no adaptation time is needed and a single controller is used over a broad band. The predictive controller is synthetized using a realistic simulation of the process based upon some rough assumptions on the transfer functions
