Vowel duration in stressed position in central & northern varieties of standard Italian
We report the results of a pilot study investigating the effect of 2 regional accents on stressed vowel duration according to word-position and syllable type in Central v. Northern accents of Standard Italian. While there is overall convergence, we also find significant regional differences in some contexts, i.e. closed syllables, and antepenultimate position. We then consider the implications of our results for the phonological description and phonetic investigation of Italian

A neural marker for social bias toward in-group accents
Accents provide information about the speaker's geographical, socio-economic, and ethnic background. Research in applied psychology and sociolinguistics suggests that we generally prefer our own accent to other varieties of our native language and attribute more positive traits to it. Despite the widespread influence of accents on social interactions, educational and work settings the neural underpinnings of this social bias toward our own accent and, what may drive this bias, are unexplored. We measured brain activity while participants from two different geographical backgrounds listened passively to 3 English accent types embedded in an adaptation design. Cerebral activity in several regions, including bilateral amygdalae, revealed a significant interaction between the participants' own accent and the accent they listened to: while repetition of own accents elicited an enhanced neural response, repetition of the other group's accent resulted in reduced responses classically associated with adaptation. Our findings suggest that increased social relevance of, or greater emotional sensitivity to in-group accents, may underlie the own-accent bias. Our results provide a neural marker for the bias associated with accents, and show, for the first time, that the neural response to speech is partly shaped by the geographical background of the listener

Robust language recognition via adaptive language factor extraction
This paper presents a technique to adapt an acoustically based
language classifier to the background conditions and speaker
accents. This adaptation improves language classification on
a broad spectrum of TV broadcasts. The core of the system
consists of an iVector-based setup in which language and channel
variabilities are modeled separately. The subsequent language
classifier (the backend) operates on the language factors,
i.e. those features in the extracted iVectors that explain the observed
language variability. The proposed technique adapts the
language variability model to the background conditions and
to the speaker accents present in the audio. The effect of the
adaptation is evaluated on a 28 hours corpus composed of documentaries and monolingual as well as multilingual broadcast
news shows. Consistent improvements in the automatic identification
of Flemish (Belgian Dutch), English and French are demonstrated for all broadcast types
Comprehension of familiar and unfamiliar native accents under adverse listening conditions
This study aimed to determine the relative processing cost associated with comprehension of an unfamiliar native accent under adverse listening conditions. Two sentence verification experiments were conducted in which listeners heard sentences at various signal-to-noise ratios. In Experiment 1, these sentences were spoken in a familiar or an unfamiliar native accent or in two familiar native accents. In Experiment 2, they were spoken in a familiar or unfamiliar native accent or in a nonnative accent. The results indicated that the differences between the native accents influenced the speed of language processing under adverse listening conditions and that this processing speed was modulated by the relative familiarity of the listener with the native accent. Furthermore, the results showed that the processing cost associated with the nonnative accent was larger than for the unfamiliar native accent
