    A state-of-the-art review on torque distribution strategies aimed at enhancing energy efficiency for fully electric vehicles with independently actuated drivetrains

However, there are still several technological barriers that hinder the large scale adoption of electric vehicles. In particular, their limited autonomy motivates studies on methods for improving the energy efficiency of electric vehicles so as to make them more attractive to the market. This paper provides a concise review on the current state-of-the-art of torque distribution strategies aimed at enhancing energy efficiency for fully electric vehicles with independently actuated drivetrains (FEVIADs). Starting from the operating principles, which include the "control allocation" problem, the peculiarities of each proposed solution are illustrated. All the existing techniques are categorized based on a selection of parameters deemed relevant to provide a comprehensive overview and understanding of the topic. Finally, future concerns and research perspectives for FEVIAD are discussed

    Development of an Advanced Torque Vectoring Control System for an Electric Vehicle with In-Wheel Motors using Soft Computing Techniques

Further distribution of this material is not permitted without prior permission from SAE.A two-passenger, all-wheel-drive urban electric vehicle (AUTO21EV) with four direct-drive in-wheel motors has been designed and developed at the University of Waterloo. A 14-degree-of-freedom model of this vehicle has been used to develop a genetic fuzzy yaw moment controller. The genetic fuzzy yaw moment controller determines the corrective yaw moment that is required to stabilize the vehicle, and applies a virtual yaw moment around the vertical axis of the vehicle. In this work, an advanced torque vectoring controller is developed, the objective of which is to generate the required corrective yaw moment through the torque intervention of the individual in-wheel motors, stabilizing the vehicle during both normal and emergency driving maneuvers. Novel algorithms are developed for the left-to-right torque vectoring control on each axle and for the front-to-rear torque vectoring distribution action. Several maneuvers are simulated to demonstrate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed advanced torque vectoring controller, and the results are compared to those obtained using the ideal genetic fuzzy yaw moment controller. This advanced level of control is possible only when a vehicle is equipped with several active chassis control systems that are networked together in an integrated fashion. To investigate such capabilities, an electric vehicle model has been developed with four direct-drive in-wheel motors and an active steering system. Using this vehicle model, an advanced slip control system, an advanced torque vectoring controller, and a genetic fuzzy active steering controller have been developed previously. This paper investigates whether the integration of these stability control systems enhances the performance of the vehicle in terms of handling, stability, path-following, and longitudinal dynamics. An integrated approach is introduced that distributes the required control effort between the in-wheel motors and the active steering system. Several test maneuvers are simulated to demonstrate the performance and effectiveness of the integrated control approach, and the results are compared to those obtained using each controller individually.     Torque vectoring based drive assistance system for turning an electric narrow tilting vehicle

    The increasing number of cars leads to traffic congestion and limits parking issue in urban area. The narrow tilting vehicles therefore can potentially become the next generation of city cars due to its narrow width. However, due to the difficulty in leaning a narrow tilting vehicle, a drive assistance strategy is required to maintain its roll stability during a turn. This article presents an effective approach using torque vectoring method to assist the rider in balancing the narrow tilting vehicles, thus reducing the counter-steering requirements. The proposed approach is designed as the combination of two torque controllers: steer angleโ€“based torque vectoring controller and tilting compensatorโ€“based torque vectoring controller. The steer angleโ€“based torque vectoring controller reduces the counter-steering process via adjusting the vectoring torque based on the steering angle from the rider. Meanwhile, the tilting compensatorโ€“based torque vectoring controller develops the steer angleโ€“based torque vectoring with an additional tilting compensator to help balancing the leaning behaviour of narrow tilting vehicles. Numerical simulations with a number of case studies have been carried out to verify the performance of designed controllers. The results imply that the counter-steering process can be eliminated and the roll stability performance can be improved with the usage of the presented approach

Significantly, ESC (Electric Stability Control) system can help escape the accident from unstable driving conditions with dangerous roads such as slippery roads due to inclement weather conditions. However, for the high performed vehicle, frequent intervention from ESC reduces the pleasure of fun-to-drive. Recently, the development of traction control technologies has been taking place with that of the electrification of vehicles. The IWMs (In-Wheel Motor system), which is one of the systems that can apply independent drive of each wheel, for the limit handling characteristics, which are the operation areas of the ESC, is introduced for the control that enables the lateral characteristics of the vehicle dynamics. Firstly, the automated drift control algorithm can be proposed for the nonlinear limit handling condition of vehicles. This approach can give an insight of fun-to-drive mode to TV (Torque Vector) control scheme, but also the stability control of high sideslip angle of the vehicle on slippery roads. Secondly, using IWMs system with front two motors, understeer gradient of vehicle, which is the unique characteristics of vehicle can be used for the proposed control strategy. A new transient parameter is formulated to be acquired rapid response of controller and reducing chattering effects. Simulation and vehicle tests are conducted for validation of TV control algorithm with steady-state and transient ISO-based tests. Finally, dynamic torque vectoring control with a four-wheel motor system with Multiple Adaptive Sliding Mode Control (MASMC) approach, which is composed of a yaw rate controller and sideslip angle controller, is introduced. Highly nonlinear characteristics, cornering stiffnesses of front and rear tires are estimated by adaptation law with measuring data. Consequently, there are two types of driving modes, the safety mode and the dynamic mode.     State Estimation and Control of Active Systems for High Performance Vehicles

    In recent days, mechatronic systems are getting integrated in vehicles ever more. While stability and safety systems such as ABS, ESP have pioneered the introduction of such systems in the modern day car, the lowered cost and increased computational power of electronics along with electrification of the various components has fuelled an increase in this trend. The availability of chassis control systems onboard vehicles has been widely studied and exploited for augmenting vehicle stability. At the same time, for the context of high performance and luxury vehicles, chassis control systems offer a vast and untapped potential to improve vehicle handling and the driveability experience. As performance objectives have not been studied very well in the literature, this thesis deals with the problem of control system design for various active chassis control systems with performance as the main objective. A precursor to the control system design is having complete knowledge of the vehicle states, including those such as the vehicle sideslip angle and the vehicle mass, that cannot be measured directly. The first half of the thesis is dedicated to the development of algorithms for the estimation of these variables in a robust manner. While several estimation methods do exist in the literature, there is still some scope of research in terms of the development of estimation algorithms that have been validated on a test track with extensive experimental testing without using research grade sensors. The advantage of the presented algorithms is that they work only with CAN-BUS data coming from the standard vehicle ESP sensor cluster. The algorithms are tested rigorously under all possible conditions to guarantee robustness. The second half of the thesis deals with the design of the control objectives and controllers for the control of an active rear wheel steering system for a high performance supercar and a torque vectoring algorithm for an electric racing vehicle. With the use of an active rear wheel steering, the driverโ€™s confidence in the vehicle improves due a reduction in the lag between the lateral acceleration and the yaw rate, which allows drivers to push the vehicle harder on a racetrack without losing confidence in it. The torque vectoring algorithm controls the motor torques to improve the tire utilisation and increases the net lateral force, which allows professional drivers to set faster lap times

    Optimal torque vectoring control strategies for stabilisation of electric vehicles at the limits of handling

    The study of chassis control has been a major research area in the automotive industry and academia for more than fifty years now. Among the popular methods used to actively control the dynamics of a vehicle, torque vectoring, the method of controlling both the direction and the magnitude of the torque on the wheels, is of particular interest. Such a method can alter the vehicleโ€™s behaviour in a positive way under both sub-limit and limit handling conditions and has become even more relevant in the case of an electric vehicle equipped with multiple electric motors. Torque vectoring has been so far employed mainly in lateral vehicle dynamics control applications, with the longitudinal dynamics of the vehicle remaining under the full authority of the driver. Nevertheless, it has been also recognised that active control of the longitudinal dynamics of the vehicle can improve vehicle stability in limit handling situations. A characteristic example of this is the case where the driver misjudges the entry speed into a corner and the vehicle starts to deviate from its path, a situation commonly referred to as a โ€˜terminal understeerโ€™ condition. Use of combined longitudinal and lateral control in such scenarios have been already proposed in the literature, but these solutions are mainly based on heuristic approaches that also neglect the strong coupling of longitudinal and lateral dynamics in limit handling situations. The main aim of this project is to develop a real-time implementable multivariable control strategy to stabilise the vehicle at the limits of handling in an optimal way using torque vectoring via the two independently controlled electric motors on the rear axle of an electric vehicle. To this end, after reviewing the most important contributions in the control of lateral and/or longitudinal vehicle dynamics with a particular focus on the limit handling solutions, a realistic vehicle reference behaviour near the limit of lateral acceleration is derived. An unconstrained optimal control strategy is then developed for terminal understeer mitigation. The importance of constraining both the vehicle state and the control inputs when the vehicle operates at the limits of handling is shown by developing a constrained linear optimal control framework, while the effect of using a constrained nonlinear optimal control framework instead is subsequently examined next. Finally an optimal estimation strategy for providing the necessary vehicle state information to the proposed optimal control strategies is constructed, assuming that only common vehicle sensors are available. All the developed optimal control strategies are assessed not only in terms of performance but also execution time, so to make sure they are implementable in real time on a typical Electronic Control Unit
