Letter of Pope Benedict XV To The Most Reverend Father Master Louis Theissling, Master General of the Dominican Order, On the occasion of the Seventh Centenary of the Confirmation of the Order

    Get PDF
This small pamphlet contains not only Pope Benedict XV’s celebratory letter to the Order of Preachers on its 700th hundred anniversary, but also two letters by the Master General of the Dominican Order, Father Louis Theissling, O.P. The first letter by Father Theissing, addressed to the Dominican Order in general discusses the date, December 22, as the formal day of celebration as well as urging the Dominican community that they should not neglect the observance. Father Theissling’s second letter, also addressed to the whole of the Order of Preachers, is a letter of encouragement, exhortation, and blessing for the Order to continue its mission of education and preaching of the gospel.https://digitalcommons.providence.edu/catholic_documents/1000/thumbnail.jp

Explaining Economic Performance in the Haitian Economy

    Get PDF
This paper develops a methodology to ascertain the determinants of growth in the Haitian economy. The methodology uses co-integration to identify those variables that can help explain economic activity, measured through GDP. This idea, pioneered by Hamilton and Perez- Quiros (1996), has the advantage of allowing for a smaller data set than the ones used by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). The results of this paper show that external and financial variables can provide Haitian policymakers with a good signaling device of the true performance of the economy. These variables are available before GDP, allowing policymakers to take preemptive measures to improve performance of the economy.Granger causality, co-integration, economic growth

Economy and Environmental Problems in the Mexican Coastal States

A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) for environmental and economic variables was performed for 17 Mexican coastal states. The ordination method allowed us to identify three groups, namely hydroelectric energy generation (I), pollution (II) and harbours (III), which were associated to different human activities. Furthermore, CCA is efficient to help us generate hypotheses for future research. It is therefore advised that CCA should be used for routine analyses into economics.Coastal States of Mexico, Canonical Correspondence Analysis, Diversity Index, Economic Development, Environmental Variables.

THEATRE AS THE REPRESENTATIVE SCENE OF THE POWER OF COURT: THE FIFTEENTH- AND SIXTEENTH-CENTURY ITALIAN EXEMPLA

An investigation of Fe XV emission lines in solar flare spectra

Previously, large discrepancies have been found between theory and observation for Fe XV emission line ratios in solar flare spectra covering the 224-327 A wavelength range, obtained by the Naval Research Laboratory's S082A instrument on board Skylab. These discrepancies have been attributed to either errors in the adopted atomic data or the presence of additional atomic processes not included in the modelling, such as fluorescence. However our analysis of these plus other S082A flare observations (the latter containing Fe XV transitions between 321-482 A), performed using the most recent Fe XV atomic physics calculations in conjunction with a CHIANTI synthetic flare spectrum, indicate that blending of the lines is primarily responsible for the discrepancies. As a result, most Fe XV lines cannot be employed as electron density diagnostics for solar flares, at least at the spectral resolution of S082A and similar instruments (i.e. ~ 0.1 A). An exception is the intensity ratio I(321.8 A)/I(327.0 A), which appears to provide good estimates of the electron density at this spectral resolution.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics, in pres
