Effects of gestational age at birth on cognitive performance : a function of cognitive workload demands
Objective: Cognitive deficits have been inconsistently described for late or moderately preterm children but are consistently found in very preterm children. This study investigates the association between cognitive workload demands of tasks and cognitive performance in relation to gestational age at birth.
Methods: Data were collected as part of a prospective geographically defined whole-population study of neonatal at-risk children in Southern Bavaria. At 8;5 years, n = 1326 children (gestation range: 23–41 weeks) were assessed with the K-ABC and a Mathematics Test.
Results: Cognitive scores of preterm children decreased as cognitive workload demands of tasks increased. The relationship between gestation and task workload was curvilinear and more pronounced the higher the cognitive workload: GA2 (quadratic term) on low cognitive workload: R2 = .02, p<0.001; moderate cognitive workload: R2 = .09, p<0.001; and high cognitive workload tasks: R2 = .14, p<0.001. Specifically, disproportionally lower scores were found for very (<32 weeks gestation) and moderately (32–33 weeks gestation) preterm children the higher the cognitive workload of the tasks. Early biological factors such as gestation and neonatal complications explained more of the variance in high (12.5%) compared with moderate (8.1%) and low cognitive workload tasks (1.7%).
Conclusions: The cognitive workload model may help to explain variations of findings on the relationship of gestational age with cognitive performance in the literature. The findings have implications for routine cognitive follow-up, educational intervention, and basic research into neuro-plasticity and brain reorganization after preterm birth
Comparison of an open-hardware electroencephalography amplifier with medical grade device in brain-computer interface applications
Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are promising communication devices between
humans and machines. BCI based on non-invasive neuroimaging techniques such as
electroencephalography (EEG) have many applications , however the dissemination
of the technology is limited, in part because of the price of the hardware. In
this paper we compare side by side two EEG amplifiers, the consumer grade
OpenBCI and the medical grade g.tec g.USBamp. For this purpose, we employed an
original montage, based on the simultaneous recording of the same set of
electrodes. Two set of recordings were performed. During the first experiment a
simple adapter with a direct connection between the amplifiers and the
electrodes was used. Then, in a second experiment, we attempted to discard any
possible interference that one amplifier could cause to the other by adding
"ideal" diodes to the adapter. Both spectral and temporal features were tested
-- the former with a workload monitoring task, the latter with an visual P300
speller task. Overall, the results suggest that the OpenBCI board -- or a
similar solution based on the Texas Instrument ADS1299 chip -- could be an
effective alternative to traditional EEG devices. Even though a medical grade
equipment still outperforms the OpenBCI, the latter gives very close EEG
readings, resulting in practice in a classification accuracy that may be

Teleoperating a mobile manipulator and a free-flying camera from a single haptic device

The proposed decoupled position and orientation workspace mapping allows the teleoperation from a single haptic device with bounded workspace of a complex robot with unbounded workspace. When the operator is reaching the position and orientation boundaries of the haptic workspace, linear and angular velocity components are respectively added to the inputs of the mobile manipulator and the flying camera. A user study on a virtual environment has been conducted to evaluate the performance and the workload on the user before and after proper training. Analysis on the data shows that the system complexity is not an obstacle for an efficient performance. This is a first step towards the implementation of a teleoperation system with a real mobile manipulator and a low-cost quadrotor as the free-flying camera.Accepted versio
Automotive automation: Investigating the impact on drivers' mental workload
Recent advances in technology have meant that an increasing number of vehicle driving
tasks are becoming automated. Such automation poses new problems for the ergonomist.
Of particular concern in this paper are the twofold effects of automation on mental
workload - novel technologies could increase attentional demand and workload,
alternatively one could argue that fewer driving tasks will lead to the problem of reduced
attentional demand and driver underload. A brief review of previous research is
presented, followed by an overview of current research taking place in the Southampton
Driving Simulator. Early results suggest that automation does reduce workload, and that
underload is indeed a problem, with a significant proportion of drivers unable to
effectively reclaim control of the vehicle in an automation failure scenario. Ultimately,
this research and a subsequent program of studies will be interpreted within the
framework of a recently proposed theory of action, with a view to maximizing both
theoretical and applied benefits of this domain
Framework for Electroencephalography-based Evaluation of User Experience
Measuring brain activity with electroencephalography (EEG) is mature enough
to assess mental states. Combined with existing methods, such tool can be used
to strengthen the understanding of user experience. We contribute a set of
methods to estimate continuously the user's mental workload, attention and
recognition of interaction errors during different interaction tasks. We
validate these measures on a controlled virtual environment and show how they
can be used to compare different interaction techniques or devices, by
comparing here a keyboard and a touch-based interface. Thanks to such a
framework, EEG becomes a promising method to improve the overall usability of

Effects of feedback, mobility and index of difficulty on deictic spatial audio target acquisition in the horizontal plane
We present the results of an empirical study investigating the effect of feedback, mobility and index of difficulty on a deictic spatial audio target acquisition task in the horizontal plane in front of a user. With audio feedback, spatial audio display elements are found to enable usable deictic interac-tion that can be described using Fitts law. Feedback does not affect perceived workload or preferred walking speed compared to interaction without feedback. Mobility is found to degrade interaction speed and accuracy by 20%. Participants were able to perform deictic spatial audio target acquisition when mobile while walking at 73% of their pre-ferred walking speed. The proposed feedback design is ex-amined in detail and the effects of variable target widths are quantified. Deictic interaction with a spatial audio display is found to be a feasible solution for future interface designs

Could Intelligent Speed Adaptation make overtaking unsafe?
This driving simulator study investigated how mandatory and voluntary ISA might affect a driver's overtaking decisions on rural roads, by presenting drivers with a variety of overtaking scenarios designed to evaluate both the frequency and safety of the manoeuvres. In half the overtaking scenarios, ISA was active and in the remainder ISA was switched off. A rural road was modelled with a number of 2 + 1 road sections, thus allowing drivers a protected overtaking opportunity. The results indicate that drivers became less inclined to initiate an overtaking manoeuvre when the mandatory ISA was active and this was particularly so when the overtaking opportunity was short. In addition to this, when ISA was activated drivers were more likely to have to abandon an overtaking, presumably due to running out of road. They also spent more time in the critical hatched area - a potentially unsafe behaviour. The quality of the overtaking manoeuvre was also affected when mandatory ISA was active, with drivers pulling out and cutting back in more sharply. In contrast, when driving with a voluntary ISA, overtaking behaviour remained mostly unchanged: drivers disengaged the function in approximately 70% of overtaking scenarios. The results of this study suggest that mandatory ISA could affect the safety of overtaking manoeuvres unless coupled with an adaptation period or other driver support functions that support safe overtaking
