A general approach to transforming finite elements

    Get PDF
The use of a reference element on which a finite element basis is constructed once and mapped to each cell in a mesh greatly expedites the structure and efficiency of finite element codes. However, many famous finite elements such as Hermite, Morley, Argyris, and Bell, do not possess the kind of equivalence needed to work with a reference element in the standard way. This paper gives a generalizated approach to mapping bases for such finite elements by means of studying relationships between the finite element nodes under push-forward.Comment: 28 page

'Constant in gain Lead in phase' element - Application in precision motion control

This work presents a novel 'Constant in gain Lead in phase' (CgLp) element using nonlinear reset technique. PID is the industrial workhorse even to this day in high-tech precision positioning applications. However, Bode's gain phase relationship and waterbed effect fundamentally limit performance of PID and other linear controllers. This paper presents CgLp as a controlled nonlinear element which can be introduced within the framework of PID allowing for wide applicability and overcoming linear control limitations. Design of CgLp with generalized first order reset element (GFORE) and generalized second order reset element (GSORE) (introduced in this work) is presented using describing function analysis. A more detailed analysis of reset elements in frequency domain compared to existing literature is first carried out for this purpose. Finally, CgLp is integrated with PID and tested on one of the DOFs of a planar precision positioning stage. Performance improvement is shown in terms of tracking, steady-state precision and bandwidth

The RC Network Analyzer Using the High Permittivity Ceramics and its Applications

    Get PDF
Described in this paper are the design considerations of the simple element of the two-dimensional RC distributed constant circuit and its applications for the analysis of the transient heat conduction problems in engineering work. This element is formed by coating with the resistive film the upper surface of the high permittivity ceramics plate whose back side to be silvered. In addition to a resistivity of every elementary area within the resistive film, there exists capacitive coupling between the area and ground. This element can be regarded as a typical two-dimensional RC distributed system and utilized as a simulator for the same dimensional heat conduction system. It has a convenience and high accuracy for the analysis of the transient heat conduction problems in engineering work

A new finite element formulation of three-dimensional beam theory based on interpolation of curvature

    Get PDF
A new finite element formulation of the `kinematically exact finite-strain beam theory' is presented. The finite element formulation employs the generalized virtual work in which the main role is played by the pseudo-curvature vector. The solution of the governing equations is found by using a combined Galerkin-collocation algorithm

Space platform expendables resupply concept definition study. Volume 3: Work breakdown structure and work breakdown structure dictionary

    Get PDF
The work breakdown structure (WBS) for the Space Platform Expendables Resupply Concept Definition Study is described. The WBS consists of a list of WBS elements, a dictionary of element definitions, and an element logic diagram. The list and logic diagram identify the interrelationships of the elements. The dictionary defines the types of work that may be represented by or be classified under each specific element. The Space Platform Expendable Resupply WBS was selected mainly to support the program planning, scheduling, and costing performed in the programmatics task (task 3). The WBS is neither a statement-of-work nor a work authorization document. Rather, it is a framework around which to define requirements, plan effort, assign responsibilities, allocate and control resources, and report progress, expenditures, technical performance, and schedule performance. The WBS element definitions are independent of make-or-buy decisions, organizational structure, and activity locations unless exceptions are specifically stated
