Cursive script recognition using a dynamic time warping method
This thesis is concerned with the problem of achieving accurate recognition
rates for Cursive Script Recognition (CSR). Cursive Script Recognition is
difficult due to writer variations such as script formation and time non-linearities.
This research entailed analysis and implementation of a Cursive Script
word-level Recognition system using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW).
Experimental results included recognition rates for various data and an in-depth
analysis of reference symbol database inter-class relationships. The
results are used to show that a clear relationship exists between word length
and inter-class separation.
Finally, a method is proposed to pre-select a subset of classes for DTW
using global features in order to reduce the linear search time associated with
DTW
Cursive script recognition using wildcards and multiple experts
Variability in handwriting styles suggests that many letter recognition engines cannot correctly identify some hand-written letters of poor quality at reasonable computational cost. Methods that are capable of searching the resulting sparse graph of letter candidates are therefore required. The method presented here employs âwildcardsâ to represent missing letter candidates. Multiple experts are used to represent different aspects of handwriting. Each expert evaluates closeness of match and indicates its confidence. Explanation experts determine the degree to which the word alternative under consideration explains extraneous letter candidates. Schemata for normalisation and combination of scores are investigated and their performance compared. Hill climbing yields near-optimal combination weights that outperform comparable methods on identical dynamic handwriting data

Word shape analysis for a hybrid recognition system
This paper describes two wholistic recognizers developed for use in a hybrid recognition system. The recognizers use information about the word shape. This information is strongly related to word zoning. One of the recognizers is explicitly limited by the accuracy of the zoning information extraction. The other recognizer is designed so as to avoid this limitation. The recognizers use very simple sets of features and fuzzy set based pattern matching techniques. This not only aims to increase their robustness, but also causes problems with disambiguation of the results. A verification mechanism, using letter alternatives as compound features, is introduced. Letter alternatives are obtained from a segmentation based recognizer coexisting in the hybrid system. Despite some remaining disambiguation problems, wholistic recognizers are found capable of outperforming the segmentation based recognizer. When working together in a hybrid system, the results are significantly higher than that of the individual recognizers. Recognition results are reported and compared
ANN-based Innovative Segmentation Method for Handwritten text in Assamese
Artificial Neural Network (ANN) s has widely been used for recognition of optically scanned character, which partially emulates human thinking in the domain of the Artificial Intelligence. But prior to recognition, it is necessary to segment the character from the text to sentences, words etc. Segmentation of words into individual letters has been one of the major problems in handwriting recognition. Despite several successful works all over the work, development of such tools in specific languages is still an ongoing process especially in the Indian context. This work explores the application of ANN as an aid to segmentation of handwritten characters in Assamese- an important language in the North Eastern part of India. The work explores the performance difference obtained in applying an ANN-based dynamic segmentation algorithm compared to projection- based static segmentation. The algorithm involves, first training of an ANN with individual handwritten characters recorded from different individuals. Handwritten sentences are separated out from text using a static segmentation method. From the segmented line, individual characters are separated out by first over segmenting the entire line. Each of the segments thus obtained, next, is fed to the trained ANN. The point of segmentation at which the ANN recognizes a segment or a combination of several segments to be similar to a handwritten character, a segmentation boundary for the character is assumed to exist and segmentation performed. Text Line Segmentation of Historical Documents: a Survey
There is a huge amount of historical documents in libraries and in various
National Archives that have not been exploited electronically. Although
automatic reading of complete pages remains, in most cases, a long-term
objective, tasks such as word spotting, text/image alignment, authentication
and extraction of specific fields are in use today. For all these tasks, a
major step is document segmentation into text lines. Because of the low quality
and the complexity of these documents (background noise, artifacts due to
aging, interfering lines),automatic text line segmentation remains an open
research field. The objective of this paper is to present a survey of existing
methods, developed during the last decade, and dedicated to documents of
