Wind measurement system
A system for remotely measuring vertical and horizontal winds present in discrete volumes of air at selected locations above the ground is described. A laser beam is optically focused in range by a telescope, and the output beam is conically scanned at an angle about a vertical axis. The backscatter, or reflected light, from the ambient particulates in a volume of air, the focal volume, is detected for shifts in wavelength, and from these, horizontal and vertical wind components are computed
Predictive control of wind turbines by considering wind speed forecasting techniques
A wind turbine system is operated such that the points of wind rotor curve and electrical generator curve coincide. In order to obtain maximum power output of a wind turbine generator system, it is necessary to drive the wind turbine at an optimal rotor speed for a particular wind speed. A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller is used for this purpose. In fixed-pitch variable-speed wind turbines, wind-rotor parameters are fixed and the restoring torque of the generator needs to be adjusted to maintain optimum rotor speed at a particular wind speed for optimum power output. In turbulent wind environment, control of variable-speed fixed-pitch wind turbine systems to continuously operate at the maximum power points becomes difficult due to fluctuation of wind speeds. In this paper, wind speed forecasting techniques will be considered for predictive optimum control system of wind turbines
Wind profiler demonstration system
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has started procurement of a 30-station demonstration network of Doppler radar wind profilers to be deployed in the central United States by 1989. The purposes of this demonstration network are: (1) to assess the impact of a large wind profiler network on meteorological forecasting; (2) to test wind profiler hardware designed specifically for commercial production and widespread deployment; and (3) to provide wind data for research programs involving weather phenomena in the central United States
Integrated Optimal Design of a Passive Wind Turbine System: An Experimental Validation
This work presents design and experimentation of a
full passive wind turbine system without active electronic part(power and control). The efficiency of such device can be obtained only if the system design parameters are mutually adapted through an Integrated Optimal Design (IOD) method. This approach based on multiobjective optimization, aims at concurrently optimizing the wind power extraction and the global system losses for a given wind speed profile while reducing the weight of the wind turbine generator. It allows us to obtain the main characteristics (geometric and energetic features) of the optimal Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) for the passive wind turbine. Finally, experiments on the PMSG prototype built from this work show a good agreement with theoretical predictions. This validates the design approach and confirms the effectiveness of such passive device
NEW APPROACHES FOR VERY SHORT-TERM STEADY-STATE ANALYSIS OF AN ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM WITH WIND FARMS
Distribution networks are undergoing radical changes due to the high level of penetration of dispersed generation. Dispersed generation systems require particular attention due to their incorporation of uncertain energy sources, such as wind farms, and due to the impacts that such sources have on the planning and operation of distribution networks. In particular, the foreseeable, extensive use of wind turbine generator units in the future requires that distribution system engineers properly account for their impacts on the system. Many new technical considerations must be addressed, including protection coordination, steady-state analysis, and power quality issues. This paper deals with the very short-term, steady-state analysis of a distribution system with wind farms, for which the time horizon of interest ranges from one hour to a few hours ahead. Several wind-forecasting methods are presented in order to obtain reliable input data for the steady-state analysis. Both deterministic and probabilistic methods were considered and used in performing deterministic and probabilistic load-flow analyses. Numerical applications on a 17-bus, medium-voltage, electrical distribution system with various wind farms connected at different busbars are presented and discusse
Power Quality Enhancement in Electricity Grids with Wind Energy Using Multicell Converters and Energy Storage
In recent years, the wind power industry is experiencing a rapid growth and more wind farms with larger size wind turbines are being connected to the power system. While this contributes to the overall security of electricity supply, large-scale deployment of wind energy into the grid also presents many technical challenges. Most of these challenges are one way or another, related to the variability and intermittent nature of wind and affect the power quality of the distribution grid. Power quality relates to factors that cause variations in the voltage level and frequency as well as distortion in the voltage and current waveforms due to wind variability which produces both harmonics and inter-harmonics. The main motivation behind work is to propose a new topology of the static AC/DC/AC multicell converter to improve the power quality in grid-connected wind energy conversion systems. Serial switching cells have the ability to achieve a high power with lower-size components and improve the voltage waveforms at the input and output of the converter by increasing the number of cells. Furthermore, a battery energy storage system is included and a power management strategy is designed to ensure the continuity of power supply and consequently the autonomy of the proposed system. The simulation results are presented for a 149.2 kW wind turbine induction generator system and the results obtained demonstrate the reduced harmonics, improved transient response, and reference tracking of the voltage output of the wind energy conversion system.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
