Web-Wide Application Customization:The Case of Mashups
Application development of is commonly a balancing of interests, as the question of what should actually be implemented is answered differently by different stakeholders. This paper considers mashups, which are a way of allowing an application to grow beyond the capabilities of the original developers. First, it introduces several approaches to integrate mashups into the services, or Web pages, that they are based upon. These approaches commonly implement ways to determine which mashups are potentially relevant for display in a certain Web page context. One approach, ActiveTags, enables users to create reliable mashups based on tags, which effectively, leads to customized views of Web pages with tagged content. A scenario that demonstrates the potential benefits of this approach is presented. Second, a formalization of the approaches is presented which uses a relational analog to show their commonalities. The abstraction from implementation specifics opens the range of vision for fundamental capabilities and gives a clear picture of future work
Engaging end-user driven recommender systems: personalization through web augmentation
In the past decades recommender systems have become a powerful tool to improve personalization on the Web. Yet, many popular websites lack such functionality, its implementation usually requires certain technical skills, and, above all, its introduction is beyond the scope and control of end-users. To alleviate these problems, this paper presents a novel tool to empower end-users without programming skills, without any involvement of website providers, to embed personalized recommendations of items into arbitrary websites on client-side. For this we have developed a generic meta-model to capture recommender system configuration parameters in general as well as in a web augmentation context. Thereupon, we have implemented a wizard in the form of an easy-to-use browser plug-in, allowing the generation of so-called user scripts, which are executed in the browser to engage collaborative filtering functionality from a provided external rest service. We discuss functionality and limitations of the approach, and in a study with end-users we assess the usability and show its suitability for combining recommender systems with web augmentation techniques, aiming to empower end-users to implement controllable recommender applications for a more personalized browsing experience.Fil: Wischenbart, Martin. Open Personalization: Involving Third Parties in Improving the User Experience of Websites
Traditional software development captures the user needs during the
requirement analysis. The Web makes this endeavour even harder due to
the difficulty to determine who these users are. In an attempt to tackle
the heterogeneity of the user base, Web Personalization techniques are
proposed to guide the users’ experience. In addition, Open Innovation
allows organisations to look beyond their internal resources to develop new
products or improve existing processes.
This thesis sits in between by introducing Open Personalization as a
means to incorporate actors other than webmasters in the personalization
of web applications. The aim is to provide the technological basis that
builds up a trusty environment for webmasters and companion actors to
collaborate, i.e. "an architecture of participation". Such architecture
very much depends on these actors’ profile. This work tackles three
profiles (i.e. software partners, hobby programmers and end users), and
proposes three "architectures of participation" tuned for each profile. Each
architecture rests on different technologies: a .NET annotation library
based on Inversion of Control for software partners, a Modding Interface in
JavaScript for hobby programmers, and finally, a domain specific language
for end-users. Proof-of-concept implementations are available for the three
cases while a quantitative evaluation is conducted for the domain specific
language
Abstracting and Structuring Web Contents for Supporting Personal Web Experiences
This paper presents a novel approach for supporting abstraction and structuring mechanisms of Web contents. The goal of this approach is to enable users to create/extract Web contents in the form of objects that they can manipulate to create Personal Web experiences. We present an architecture that not only allows the user interaction with individual objects but also supports the integration of many objects found in diverse Web sites. We claim that once Web contents have been organized as objects it is possible to create many types of Personal Web interactions. The approach involves end-users and developers and it is fully supported by dedicated tools. We show how end-users can use our tools to identify contents and transform them into objects stored in our platform. Context-aware access to heterogeneous resources through on-the-fly mashups
Current scenarios for app development are characterized by rich resources that often overwhelm the final users, especially in mobile app usage situations. It is therefore important to define design methods that enable dynamic filtering of the pertinent resources and appropriate tailoring of the retrieved content. This paper presents a design framework based on the specification of the possible contexts deemed relevant to a given application domain and on their mapping onto an integrated schema of the resources underlying the app. The context and the integrated schema enable the instantiation at runtime of templates of app pages in function of the context characterizing the user’s current situation of use
EXPRESS: Resource-oriented and RESTful Semantic Web services
This thesis investigates an approach that simplifies the development of Semantic Web services (SWS) by removing the need for additional semantic descriptions.The most actively researched approaches to Semantic Web services introduce explicit semantic descriptions of services that are in addition to the existing semantic descriptions of the service domains. This increases their complexity and design overhead. The need for semantically describing the services in such approaches stems from their foundations in service-oriented computing, i.e. the extension of already existing service descriptions. This thesis demonstrates that adopting a resource-oriented approach based on REST will, in contrast to service-oriented approaches, eliminate the need for explicit semantic service descriptions and service vocabularies. This reduces the development efforts while retaining the significant functional capabilities.The approach proposed in this thesis, called EXPRESS (Expressing RESTful Semantic Services), utilises the similarities between REST and the Semantic Web, such as resource realisation, self-describing representations, and uniform interfaces. The semantics of a service is elicited from a resource’s semantic description in the domain ontology and the semantics of the uniform interface, hence eliminating the need for additional semantic descriptions. Moreover, stub-generation is a by-product of the mapping between entities in the domain ontology and resources.EXPRESS was developed to test the feasibility of eliminating explicit service descriptions and service vocabularies or ontologies, to explore the restrictions placed on domain ontologies as a result, to investigate the impact on the semantic quality of the description, and explore the benefits and costs to developers. To achieve this, an online demonstrator that allows users to generate stubs has been developed. In addition, a matchmaking experiment was conducted to show that the descriptions of the services are comparable to OWL-S in terms of their ability to be discovered, while improving the efficiency of discovery. Finally, an expert review was undertaken which provided evidence of EXPRESS’s simplicity and practicality when developing SWS from scratch
Mass Customization of Cloud Services - Engineering, Negotiation and Optimization
Several challenges hinder the entry of mass customization principles into Cloud computing: Firstly, the service engineering on provider side needs to be automated. Secondly, there has to be a suitable negotiation mechanism helping provider and consumer on finding an agreement on Quality-of-Service and price. Thirdly, finding the optimal configuration requires adequate and efficient optimization techniques. The work at hand addresses these challenges through technical and economic contributions
Integrating institutional repositories into the Semantic Web
The Web has changed the face of scientific communication; and the Semantic Web promises new ways of adding value to research material by making it more accessible to automatic discovery, linking, and analysis. Institutional repositories contain a wealth of information which could benefit from the application of this technology. In this thesis I describe the problems inherent in the informality of traditional repository metadata, and propose a data model based on the Semantic Web which will support more efficient use of this data, with the aim of streamlining scientific communication and promoting efficient use of institutional research output
A Semantics-based User Interface Model for Content Annotation, Authoring and Exploration
The Semantic Web and Linked Data movements with the aim of creating, publishing and interconnecting machine readable information have gained traction in the last years.
However, the majority of information still is contained in and exchanged using unstructured documents, such as Web pages, text documents, images and videos.
This can also not be expected to change, since text, images and videos are the natural way in which humans interact with information.
Semantic structuring of content on the other hand provides a wide range of advantages compared to unstructured information.
Semantically-enriched documents facilitate information search and retrieval, presentation, integration, reusability, interoperability and personalization.
Looking at the life-cycle of semantic content on the Web of Data, we see quite some progress on the backend side in storing structured content or for linking data and schemata.
Nevertheless, the currently least developed aspect of the semantic content life-cycle is from our point of view the user-friendly manual and semi-automatic creation of rich semantic content.
In this thesis, we propose a semantics-based user interface model, which aims to reduce the complexity of underlying technologies for semantic enrichment of content by Web users.
By surveying existing tools and approaches for semantic content authoring, we extracted a set of guidelines for designing efficient and effective semantic authoring user interfaces.
We applied these guidelines to devise a semantics-based user interface model called WYSIWYM (What You See Is What You Mean) which enables integrated authoring, visualization and exploration of unstructured and (semi-)structured content.
To assess the applicability of our proposed WYSIWYM model, we incorporated the model into four real-world use cases comprising two general and two domain-specific applications.
These use cases address four aspects of the WYSIWYM implementation:
1) Its integration into existing user interfaces,
2) Utilizing it for lightweight text analytics to incentivize users,
3) Dealing with crowdsourcing of semi-structured e-learning content,
4) Incorporating it for authoring of semantic medical prescriptions
