Believing that volunteers are a powerful force for community improvement, whose efforts make the most of limited resources, the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service (MCVS) seeks to involve Mississippians to make a difference in every community in the state. As the state\u27s official organization to promote community service and volunteerism, the MCVS invests in Mississippi communities by building public/private coalitions, linking communities and organizations to local and national resources, coordinating state resources for volunteers, and initiating volunteer programs to address unmet needs

This report is the second in a series of briefs on a 2003 survey of volunteer management capacity among public charities in the United States. It focuses on charities' adoption of nine volunteer management practices: supervision and communication, liability coverage, screening and matching, regular collection of volunteer numbers and hours written policies and job descriptions, recognition activities, measurement of volunteer impacts, training and professional development, and training for paid staff in working with volunteers. We report on the extent of adoption of these practices by charities with different characteristics, and the relationship between volunteer management practices and retention of volunteers

"Volunteering in America: 2007 City Trends and Rankings" uses volunteer data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics from 2004-2006. It ranks and includes profiles for 50 of the largest cities including the volunteer rate; the types of organizations through which residents serve; their main volunteering activities, the average hours per year and volunteer rates for age and gender demographic groups, and key trends and highlights. The report also analyzes social and demographic trends affect city volunteer rates and finds that there are four key drivers of volunteering: community attachment; commuting times, high school graduation levels and poverty; and the prevalence of nonprofits and their capacity to retain volunteers from year to year. The information on volunteering at the local level can help local governments, community leaders, service organizations, and volunteers nationwide develop a volunteer growth strategy, set goals to increase the level of individual engagement in volunteer activities, and build the infrastructure of nonprofits and communities to support more volunteer opportunities

Volunteers play an important role in events worldwide. This research examines the importance of volunteers’ motivation and satisfaction during events by using Sing China as a case study. This research focuses on events, volunteers, volunteer recruitment, volunteer rewards and volunteer retention. The research uses both quantitative and qualitative methods. 50 random strangers off the street were surveyed., Published journals were used as academic support for the theories. The results show that people are interested in cultural events and they come to volunteer for the reason of improving personal values and build self-esteem. For the part of volunteer motivation, most of the participants show themselves willing to receive small gifts after volunteering. Providing a chance for volunteers to choose jobs which suit them, and providing volunteer training are the main things that participants think should improve during the events

As interest in school improvement has become an increasingly salient national issue in the 1990\u27s, interest in community service and service-learning as an integral part of education and educational improvement has shown a similar increase. In Pennsylvania, the proportion of school districts offering academic credit for community service has grown from 5% in 1989 to 20% in 1992; the number of school districts requiring community service for graduation has grown from one to seven. A series of national studies and reports including the Carnegie Commission\u27s \u27Turning Points, the W. T. Grant Commission\u27s Forgotten Half, and Dr. Ernest Boyer\u27s influential books.High School and College have urged that community service become an expected part of growing up m America

    Personal Volunteer Computing

We propose personal volunteer computing, a novel paradigm to encourage technical solutions that leverage personal devices, such as smartphones and laptops, for personal applications that require significant computations, such as animation rendering and image processing. The paradigm requires no investment in additional hardware, relying instead on devices that are already owned by users and their community, and favours simple tools that can be implemented part-time by a single developer. We show that samples of personal devices of today are competitive with a top-of-the-line laptop from two years ago. We also propose new directions to extend the paradigm
